There are 5 food groups. Each food group is a type of food that gives you certain kinds of
nutrients that you need to be healthy and for your body to grow.
The breads, cereals and starches group is the first group..
You probably eat the most of this group during a day. it includes things like potatoes,
breads, rice, noodles, and wheat products.
These foods give us energy to work, play, and learn all day!
The fruits and vegetable group is the second group. sometimes people separate these into
two groups, but they are really very similar. you should eat a lot of these every day. don't
just eat sweet fruit either. you should eat as many veggies as you fruits. eat your onions,
bananas, pears, carrots, and peas.!
There are so many others to choose from, and they are loaded with vitamins. Different
colors of fruits and veggies have different nutrients, so try different colors during the day.
The next group is the dairy group. It is made up of milk, cheese, yogurt, cream and other
delicious proteins. These have a lots of calcium and protein to help you grow. they make
your muscles and bones strong.
The meat, poultry, fish, and protein group includes not just the meats but also things like
nuts, beans and eggs. These things have a lot of minerals and more protein to help us
grow.
The final group is the fast and sugar group. These are sweets and treats that we love to
eat, but really should not eat too much of. they may taste good, but they don't have very
much nutrition for us.
It is important to eat the right amount of foods from ALL food groups. Most of your food
should come from the bread, cereal and starches group and the fruits and vegetable
group. Don't just eat one kind of food, and definitely don't eat too many treats.
