Pampering Your Pup Gone Gourmet

He’s there when you need a reassuring kiss, to warm your tootsies under the covers on those cold winter nights, and to
just generally spend every waking moment by your side. He gives you his best, so now it’s your turn to give him your
best. You may never have taken him to a doggie day spa (too prissy), doggie day care (too many other dogs), or even had
a doggie walker (too impersonal), but now’s the chance to put on your tallest chef hat, lace up that apron, and get to work
on some of the best doggie cuisine you’ve ever seen.

Sure, you’ve seen those high-priced bags of medical diet foods in the vet’s office. They have ingredients like lamb and
rice or duck and potato – better food than you have for dinner, but the price really comes from the packaging. You can
easily create healthy, helpful cuisine for your dog in your own kitchen.

This isn’t the usual doggie cookbook stuffed full of crunchy treats and cookies. Sure, those are in here, but we also have
real-world practical meals that you can make to appeal to both your appetite and your buddy’s. You like meatloaf, right?
What if you could make a meatloaf that was good for both you and your pup? Are you not getting the hint yet? You can
make a meatloaf that’s good for both you and your pup that also tastes great to both of you! It’s on page 86.

If you just want to experiment in making your own dog food, you’ll find a wide variety of recipes here. If your pooch is
under the weather, check the collections of healing foods, beverages, and hygiene recipes for possible supplements and
ways of alleviating her ickiness. And if you’re one of those daring people who wants to travel around the world with your
pup but can’t afford the airfare, flip to the international section for creative cuisine that can satisfy your dog’s appetite for
delicious food and your appetite for exotic gourmet cooking. Many of the recipes contain the vitamins and minerals
needed for energy, but you’ll also find certain ingredients can help improve his teeth, bones, skin, fur, stamina, weight,
and overall wellbeing.

Now before you or your pup sink your teeth into these recipes, you should be aware of what to avoid when cooking for
your dog:

Chocolate Chicken bones

Raw meat and/or eggs Excessive amounts of protein
Beans or bean derivatives (including soy) Pork
Onions Organ meats more than twice/week
Dairy products (esp. with pre-existing stomach
problems

This table isn’t exhaustive, but it’ll give you an at-a-glance tool to keep handy if you decide to invent your own recipes or
modify some of those in the book. Now remember – have fun! You’re cooking for your dog, for goodness’ sake.

Okay, class is over. Get cooking!

Oinkers and Omelettes

Category Serves Preparation Time Cooking Time Experience

Breakfast 8 20 minutes 10 minutes

Ingredients
Quick Tips:
• 3 eggs
The crescent rolls in these snacks package the eggs and sausage
• 8 mini turkey sausages in a small, easy-to-handle treat. These are so neat and tidy you
can zip them in a baggie and take them to the dog park for a
• 1 package refrigerated crescent rolls
protein burst.

Preparation & Cooking

Unroll crescent dough and separate into 8 rectangles on a greased cookie sheet. Cook eggs for 3 minutes in microwave-
safe bowl, stirring each minute. When eggs are done, scoop small spoonfuls into the centre of each crescent rectangle.
Top with a turkey sausage. Fold remaining crescent dough over eggs and sausage to make neat package, OR bundle
excess dough and flare edges to create small “sacks” of goodies. Bake according to crescent roll instructions and allow to
cool thoroughly.

Store extras in the refrigerator until your pup is ready to eat them (but don’t ask him – he’ll always be ready to eat them).

Biscotti Base

Category Serves Preparation Time Cooking Time Experience

Breakfast 3 dozen cookies 10 minutes 35 minutes

Ingredients
Quick Tips:
• 100 ml (1/3 cup) unsalted butter
Biscotti dough can become sticky, so for quicker cleanup rub
• 200 ml (3/4 cup) sugar some flour between your hands and line the cookie sheet with
parchment paper.
• 2 eggs

• 10 ml (2 tsp) grated orange zest

• 530 ml (2 1/4 cups) whole wheat flour

• 10 ml (1 1/2 tsp) baking powder

• 1 ml (1/4 tsp) salt

Preparation & Cooking Whole wheat and buckwheat flours are two basic
elements of healthy cooking for your pooch.

Cream the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl until fluffy. Add eggs and orange zest. Combine flour, baking powder, and
salt in separate bowl, then beat into the butter mixture.
For plain biscotti cookies: Divide the dough in half and form two logs on cookie sheet, each measuring 1/2” thick, 1
1/2” wide, and 12 inches long. Space two inches apart and bake at 160ºC (325ºF) for 25 minutes (or until golden). Let
cool for five minutes, then cut ½” wide slices at 45 degree angles. Bake for 5 minutes, turn cookies over, then bake for
another 5 minutes. Let cool.

Before making biscotti dough, toast almonds in a

shallow pan for 9 minutes at 160ºC (325ºF). Allow

Carob-dipped Biscotti

Category Serves Preparation Time Cooking Time Experience

Breakfast 3 dozen cookies 10 minutes 35 minutes

It’s hard to keep people paws off these pseudo-chocolate-dipped

Ingredients delicacies. Once your pooch tastes carob, you’ll never get him to
eat another plain-Jane biscuit!

• Biscotti base Helpful Hint:

• 190 g (6 oz)
If you can’t find carob in the health food section of your local
grocery store, find a whole foods or organic market. Still no
luck? There are hundreds of online organic retailers who offer
carob among their choices.

Preparation & Cooking

Make some extra biscotti to have on hand – it keeps for months.

Prepare biscotti base as specified, adding any desired nuts, flavouring, or fruits. After cookies have cooled, melt carob
according to package instructions (preferably in a double boiler to avoid scorching). Dip half of each cookie into liquid
carob, then allow to cool on wax-paper coated surface. Do not cool in refrigerator. Carob should be completely solid
before transferring to storage container since semi-soft carob easily fuses with other surfaces.

Beagle Bagels

Category Serves Preparation Time Cooking Time Experience

Breakfast 6 bagels 5 minutes Varies

Ingredients
This is a great recipe if your house is constantly full of leftover
• 6-pack supermarket bagels bagels, whether from the grocery store or neighbourhood bakery.
Rather than throw them away, why not share them with your
canine family members?

Healthy Hint:

Beagle bagels are fantastic for dental health. Because they are so
hard but soften a bit with the addition of the dog’s saliva, their
crunchy consistency helps clean dogs’ teeth without risk of
breaking them.

Preparation & Cooking

If the bagels are frozen, thaw them in the microwave

prior to drying. There are several ways of achieving
the proper consistency for beagle bagels, which, of
course, is rock solid chewable goodness.

Oven: Set the oven to a low temperature, preferably

90ºC (200ºF) or below. Place the bagels on a sheet of
foil in the middle of the oven and allow to bake.
Check the bagels periodically as they can take up to
six hours to dry sufficiently, depending upon the
freshness of the bagels when you begin. Once they
Rock solid chewable goodness!
seem solid, place on a rack to cool for an hour before
giving to the dogs.
Air: This is the easiest of the three drying methods but also takes the longest. Set the bagels on a sheet of wax paper or
foil in an area with good circulation. The top of the fridge often works well as it is closer to ceiling vents. Leave the
bagels to dry for several days, checking their consistency daily. Depending upon the freshness of the bagels when you
began, they may take up to two weeks to dry completely.
Microwave: After thawing any frozen bagels, continue cooking them in the microwave for extended periods of time at a
low heat level (40% or less). Check the bagels every 10 minutes for consistency, but keep in mind that even the
microwave can take up to an hour to dry the bagels sufficiently. Don’t worry about airtight containers for leftovers – the
open air just helps to dry them out a bit more!

Take any leftover dry waffles (the syrup can put him on a sugar high you’ll be sorry you induced) from the breakfast and
place them directly on the middle oven rack. A ventilated pan in the middle of the oven will also work. Set the oven
below 90ºC (200ºF) degrees and let ‘em bake. Check on the waffles every hour for consistency – you want them brown
and solid, not black and crispy. Once they seem to have reached the goal hardness, allow them to cool in a well-ventilated
area. The air flow helps dry them even further.

Your pooch will love the crunchy consistency, but he won’t even realize it’s cleaning his teeth!

• 3 potatoes, baked
If your pup seems to be showing signs of food allergies (red,

determine whether or not it really is an allergy. Most dogs are
not fed lamb and potato on a regular basis – if it was a food
allergy, a few days of this diet should clear it up. You should
then speak with your vet about what to feed your pup from that
point on. If the allergy doesn’t seem to clear up, see the vet for
other possible causes.

• 1 black teabag and speak soothingly to him – if he’ll let you, tie the teabag in
place using a dishrag and allow it to soak for an hour.

Why it Works:

The black tea leaves are soothing to the skin but are also
relatively tasteless, so your dog shouldn’t feel the impulse to
continue licking once removed.

Preparation & Cooking

After bringing the water to a scalding temperature on

the stove or in the microwave, dip the teabag into the
water for a brief amount of time. Remove and allow to
cool to a touchable temperature.

If you’re a green tea fan and don’t keep black tea in

improvement.

Shampoo for Sticky Situations

Hygiene N/A 5 minutes 0

Ingredients
How to Use:
• 250 ml (1 cup) cornmeal
Pour the mixture into a container large enough to hold your dog,
• 250 ml (1 cup) all-purpose flour whether a tub, box, or roasting pan (no, this isn’t that kind of
cookbook!). Place your pooch in the container and rub the
mixture into the contaminated area of fur, being careful to avoid
her eyes, nose, and ears. Continue applying and rubbing until
you can brush the mixture from her fur. Throw away the used
mixture and follow up with a regular shampoo.

Why it Works:

Flour and cornmeal are naturally absorbent, so oils and other

contaminants don’t stand a chance against them.

Preparation & Cooking

Mix the ingredients, increasing or decreasing amounts according to dog’s size as powder should cover the entire
oily/sticky spot.
