4.1.High-voltagebatteryunit
TheBMWi3 LCIandi3sexclusivelyusethecurrent94Ahhigh-voltagebatteryunit,whichhasbeen
availablesincelate2016.

Toincreasetherangeofthevehicle,thecapacityofthecellshasbeenincreasedto94Ah.The
previousbatterycellshadacapacityof60Ah.Herethedataofthetwohigh-voltagebatteryunitswith

4.Drive

I01High-voltagebatteryunit

Thetechnicalchangestothehigh-voltagebatteryunitconcernonlythehousingandthecellmodules.
Toaccommodatetheincreasedweightofthecellmodules,thetraybottomhasbeenreinforced.
Thecellmoduleshavenotchangedintheirdimensionsorintheirdesign.Onlythecapacityofthe
individualbatterycellshasincreased.Thisincreasestheweightofthecellmodules.Theremaining
components,suchasthebatterymanagementelectronicsandsafetybox,havenotchanged.Norhas
thecoolingsystemortheelectricalheatingchanged.

4.2.Electricmotor
Theefficiencyoftheelectricalmachinehasbeenincreasedbyfittingnewlightweightrollerbearings
withlowercoefficientsoffrictiononthei3s.

4.3.HillHoldfunction
TheHillHoldfunctionwasintroducedduringproductupdatingmeasuresandhasnowbeenadopted
fortheLCI.TheHillHoldfunctiondiffersfromthefamiliarAutoHoldfunctioninBMWvehiclesinthat
theholdingtorquerequiredisgeneratedbytheelectricalmachineandnotbytheDynamicStability
Control.

7
I01/I01s LCI
4.Drive
TheHillHoldfunctionallowsthecustomertopreventthevehiclefromrollingawaywithoutpressing
thebrakepedalafterhaltingthevehicleonuphillanddownhillgradientsofupto8%.TheHillHold
functionisdesignedtoholdaBMWi3withREXwhichisfullyequippedandatamaximumweightof
3814lbsonanuphillordownhillgradientof8%.Atorqueofapproximately 52lb-ftisrequiredforthis.
Thetorqueisgeneratedintheelectricalmachineusingzerospeedcontrol.

Sinceheatorvoltagescaninfluencetheelectricdrivesystem,itispossiblethattheholdingtorque
becomesunavailableoverthecourseoftime.Inthiscase,theholdingfunctionmustbeensuredon
thevehicle.Thisiswhyitisnecessarytoswitchovertoanalternativeholdingsystemwhichisthe
electronicparkingbrake.ThisisachievedusingasoftwarefunctionintheEDME.Thefunctionisonly
switchedtotheelectricparkingbrakeifthevehiclehasexceededthe8%thresholdorthetemperature
oftheelectricmachineistohigh.

TheHillHoldfunctionisactiveindrivepositionsDandRandthecustomerdoesnotneedtoactivate
it.

4.Drive
4.4.Newtractioncontrol
TheBMWi3shasDynamicStabilityControlwiththefunctionsfamiliarfromotherBMWvehicles.The
onlydifferenceisthattheBMWi3isnotfittedwithaDTCbutton.DTCisturnedonandoffusingthe
iDrivecontroller.TheBMWi3hadpreviouslyalsohadDynamicTractionControl.Butthiswaslimited
onlytothelowerspeedrangeupto30mphandessentiallydesignedforstraight-aheaddriving.

TheDTCfunctionwasalsomodifiedwhenthenewcruisecontrolfunctionwasintroducedintheBMW
i3sfor11/2017.Thismeansthatmaximumtractionisavailableinthespeedrangeover60mphand
moredrivepowerispermittedevenwhencornering.

SpecialAutomaticStabilityControlhasbeendevelopedforthedemandsofahighlydynamicelectric
drive.ThecontrolcycleworksnoticeablyquickerthanthepreviousASCsystem.TheASCsystem
alsooperatesduringrecuperativedecelerationofthevehicleandensuesthatthedecelerationcanbe
maintained,evengivendifficultroadsurfaceconditions(rain/snow),andhencemoreenergycanbe
recuperated.Thisresultsinimprovedstability,tractionandavailabilityofenergyrecoveryinalldriving
andambientconditions.Inaddition,anexpandedandredesignedDTCmodeensuresenhanced
traction,particularlyonloosesurfacesandevenmoredrivingpleasureoverthefullspeedrange.

5.2.New2ndgenerationchargingcable

2ndgenerationstandardchargingcable

The2ndgenerationstandardchargingcable,introducedin03/2017,isalsousedintheBMWi3LCIas
thestandardcharger.Ithasbeenrevisedandmodifiedinthefollowingareas:

• Output10A@230V2.3kW(previously2.7kW)
• MoistureprotectioninaccordancewithIP67(previouslyIP54)
• Adaptedtotheinternationalstandardforchargers
• Twotemperaturesensorsinthemainsplugformonitoringpowerconsumption.

Theelectricalvehiclesupplyequipment(EVSE)inallvariantsisidentical.Thetemperatureonboth
phasesismeasuredintheplugtoprotectthemainssockets.PowerconsumptionbytheEVSEis
reducedifthetemperatureexceedsaspecifiedvalue.Themaximumpermissiblepowerconsumption
is10A.

8.5.Drivingdynamicscontrol
TheBMWi3shasDynamicStabilityControlwiththefunctionsfamiliarfromotherBMWvehicles.The
onlydifferenceisthattheBMWi3isnotfittedwithaDTCbutton,howeveritcanbeturnedonandoff
viatheiDrive.TheBMWi3hadpreviouslyalsohadDynamicTractionControl.Butthiswaslimitedonly
tothelowerspeedrangeupto30mphandessentiallydesignedforstraight-aheaddriving.

TheDTCfunctionwasalsomodifiedwhenthenewcruisecontrolfunctionwasintroducedintheBMW
i3sfor11/2017.Thismeansthatmaximumtractionisavailableinthespeedrangeover60mphand
moredrivepowerispermittedevenwhencornering.

SpecialAutomaticStabilityControlhasbeendevelopedforthedemandsofahighlydynamicelectric
drive.ThecontrolcycleworksnoticeablyquickerthanthepreviousASCsystem.TheASCsystem
alsooperatesduringrecuperativedecelerationofthevehicleandensuesthatthedecelerationcanbe
maintained,evengivendifficultroadsurfaceconditions(rain/snow)andhencemoreenergycanbe
recuperated.Thisresultsinimprovedstability,tractionandavailabilityofenergyrecoveryinalldriving
andambientconditions.Inaddition,anexpandedandreconfiguredDTCmodeensuresenhanced
traction,particularlyonloosesurfacesandevenmoremotoringpleasureoverthefullspeedrange.The
outstandingdrivabilityunderaccelerationandrecuperationunderallambientconditionsenhances
safetyandridecomfort.
