THE INFLUENCE OF MEDIA ON THE VIEWS OF GENDER
INTRODUCTION:
Gender stereotypes are found in everywhere in the world. It has always been a part of our
society. They start to follow us from the earliest days when we were kids and continues to
influence us when we were choosing toys, subjects at school and career. From childhood girls
and boys are steered in different directions growing up. This is because of Gender
Stereotypes the traditional ideas about what boys and girls can or should do. Our society
taught us that girls should not play outside, they should help their mother in housework and
boys should not cry in front of anyone.
Mostly Stereotypes have always been against females while men are always suppose to
be dominant over the females. From childhood, girls are structured in such a way that if they
are abused or even physically tortured they do not raise their voice against it.
Even today, when a women goes for an interview in media jobs, people think that she
got the job because of her livelihoods not because of her ability. In the work place women are
abused and sexual harassed but their mind set up in such that if they raise their voice against
these things society will call them wrong and they will be approached. With the passage of
time, human beings have progressed a lots but these stereotypes against women has not
changed.

PAKISTANI DRAMA
In Pakistan, TV programs such as dramas, movies, songs and advertisements are broadcast
in such a way that Gender stereotypes is clearly visible. Women are not given equal rights in
any society. The reason for all these stereotypes is the old ideas of our society and the media
shows the image of these ideas into their programs. In Pakistani serials the gender inequality
can be seen clearly visible.
In Pakistani television serial “DEEWANGI" produced by Geo TV and 95% people’s like
this TV show. In this serials, the association of male gender shows the higher activity level
and aggression level as compared to female gender. This is the story of a girl her name is
“Nageen Faiyaz" living her cruel and greedy brother in law “Noor Ul Hassan". The serials
depicts that the man slapped his wife in front of everyone and forced Nageen to look for a
job and give money in home. When she goes for job interviews, everyone looks at her with
lust and try to harassed her. After many effects she got a job of bus hostess. She meets
“Sultan Durrani” who is very wealthy businessman. He is greatly influence by the presence of
Nageen and at first glance he seems to love her. He offered her a job and says that the job
you are doing is not for your standard but she refused to accept his job proposal. Then he
follow her everywhere that she accept his proposal.
Pakistani television serials of today, almost all stories are heavily laced with societal
stereotypes. In this serial, it is clearly visible that men are dominant over women. In our
society men have the rights to abused and raise their hands on their wives but wives should
tolerate all these things in silence and try to keep these matter in their home and should not
raise their voice against these issues. The hero who plays the protagonist doesn’t understand
that if a girl says no it means no. But mostly men don’t understand these things and always
think they have the power to change her decisions. Men have always wanted and made
decisions for women. This serial depicts the weakness and helplessness of women.

ADVERTISEMENT FOR CARS AND AUTOMOBILES:
In car or automobiles feature advertisement, usually men are seen driving. Because in every
society believe that men can well drive the car as compare to women. There is a stereotypes
found in everywhere that women are poor drivers. People think that women can’t handle
gadget and when they drive, they do an accident. That’s why women are rarely seen driving
in any advertisement and movies.
This stereotypes has been going on in the past and still today people believe that
women can’t drive well. In fact accidents are not only happen from women but also from
men. If men do accidents our society ignores them but if women do then they are criticized
by everyone. This is the mirror image of our society thinking.

ADVERTISEMENT FOR FAIRNESS PRODUCTS:

In Pakistan and India, girls are judged by their physical appearance. Advertisement likes
fairness products, probably lots of stereotypes appear related to the skin tone of the females.
Our society thinks that fair complexion is the symbol of beauty and confident while girls with
darker complexion consider not beautiful and less confident. As in the advertisement, the
catch
words are “fairness in 7 days” and “best ever nikhar"

Our society wants every girls look fair because it is the key of success and beauty.
Therefore there are so many fairness product made every years and their business are going
on raise day by day.
For example, Fair complexion is very important in job interviews. People think fair girls
have more confident and are more capable than darker complexion. When people want to
see a girl for their son's wedding, they want the girl should have fair complexion. Many girls
are not married because of their darker complexion. In our society, physical appearance are
preferred over the character.
BOLLYWOOD MOVIE
Gender stereotypes are clearly seen in each movies and now it has become a part of all
movies and without such stereotypes the movies would be incomplete. PINK is a India movie
produced by Shoojit Sircar and released on 2016. This movie reflects the narrow mindset of
majority of the peoples that men and women are judged by their gender. This movie shows
the alive cinema of our society.

In this movie, the highlight statement is that “ If a girl says no it means no".
This is a story of three independent working young women who lived together. One night,
they are attending a rock show where they meet some men. One of them tried to physically
abused the one woman. So she puts a bottle on the man head’s try to rescue herself. Then
these women are arrested for attacking that men. No lawyer want to take their case. Then a
retired lawyer stands to defend these women.
This movie depicts the narrow view of our society about the women. For example, if a
girl lives away from her family because of her work then people think that her character is
not good. In our society, the watch needle decides the character of girls. If the girls are out at
night then people indicate that they are not decent. If a girl is talking or having lunch with
someone, then the person is wondering that he got the rights to abuse her. If our society
focus on the emphasis of the boys then the girls will be save automatically.

INDIAN SONGS:
In almost all songs, serials, movies and advertisements shows men are dominant over
women. The men believes that women are their personal property so they have rights to do
whatever they want to do with women.
The “CHHAPAAK” song is sing by Arijit Singh and written by Gulzar. It is the title song of
Deepika Padukone's new movie. This song shows the journey of a girl suffering from acid
attack and raising above the pain and trauma of acid attack and become the voice for those
girls who go through these accidents.

This song depicts the poor thinking of such men. The acid is present in their mind which
they put on the faces of the females. In every society, the highest priority is given to the face
of the individual. They do not even think that they are not just burning their faces but taking
away their identities. Instead of hiding the face of culprits, victims hide their faces. This is
because of our society who tells to victims that covers your faces with a cloth because you’re
looking so worst.
Today acid attacks are reported everywhere. But in Pakistan and India, the acid attack
are highest and most commonly seen. Usually sulfuric and nitric acid are used for such
attacks. These acids become the cause of damaging the skin tissues, dissolving the bones and
blindness. According to ASTI (Acid Survivors Trust International) there are 75 to 80% of acid
attack cases, the women and girls are victims. Acid attacks in some different countries are
given such as,
In Bangladesh, there were 492 acid attacks recorded in 2002.
In Pakistan, there were 250 to 300 acid attack recorded in 2013.
In India, there are 1000 acid attacks record in every year.
( Castella, T, 2013)
In every countries, they has been strict laws made for these cases but despite these law’s
acid attacks accidents still happen today. The culprits moral rules had been dead and they
don’t even realize their faults. They think that if the victims were to obey us then we
wouldn’t do this. They have forced us to do this. It is the fault of our society who has given
many rights to men and they also misuse them. Our society has made men think that women
are their slaves.

ARTICLE
GENDER INEQUALITY IN LABOUR FORCE PARTICIPATION:
The stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says it’s a girl. The stereotyping of
females begins when the doctor says it’s a girl. The society we live in, if the first born is a boy
then peoples feels very happy but if the first born is a girl then peoples don’t take it nicely
because they consider her as burden. There are so many stereotypes associated with women
such as,
 Female are considered beautiful only if they are lean and have fair complexion while
those female who are Fat and darker complexion are considered not beautiful.
 In Pakistan and India, if you can’t speak English correctly, people think that you are
illiterate.
 Female don’t know how to drive and if they drive they do an accident. That’s why only
men can drive cars and automobiles in proper way.
 Our society also influence the female when they are choosing subjects at school and
also influence their careers such as Mathematics and science subjects are for boys
because they are good in these subjects while girls are not good at math.
The economic development of Pakistan cannot happen unless the gender discrimination
has been abolished. In Pakistan, a major part of our population is suffering from poverty. In
this article shows the gender inequality access to paid job of same designation and the
difference in the facilities provided to women and men. The women are not treat with equal
rights and equal opportunity in work place.
In 2012 to 2013, more than 75% of the women population is considered as economically
inactive. The rate of women unemployment is higher than men. There are 13.3 million female
labor force whereas 45.7 million male labor force in Pakistan. The difference in these values
shows that men are dominant over the women. According to LEP (Labour Force Participation
Rate) shows that there were 24% female employed whereas 78.3% were male employed
from last 15 year record.
Sabir, M, 2015
This rate of unemployment is because of gender inequality that is present in our society.
If men and women are working on the same designation then women are never given equal
sales as compare to men. The women also got less chances for getting these types of jobs
because mostly people think that women can’t do hard work but women proof herself in
every field. In order to increase the number of women employed, the Government should
provide equal rights and equal opportunities to women.
