Simulation of Power Supply Circuit

1.) Using LTSPICE, connect the given full-wave bridge-type rectifier circuit.
Using transient simulation, plot the waveforms of: (a) current along diode D1; (b)
current along diode D2; (c) current along diode D3; (d) current along diode D4;
and (e) output voltage across resistor R1. In 1 to 2 sentences only, briefly
describe the operation of full-wave bridge-type rectifier circuit.
(a) current along diode D1

(b). the waveform of current along diode (D2)

(c). the waveform of current along diode (D3)

(d). the waveform of current along diode (D4)

(e). the waveform of output voltage across resistor R1

The four diodes labelled D1 to D4 are arranged in “series pairs” with only two diodes conducting
current during each half cycle. During the positive half cycle of the supply, diodes D1 and D2
conduct in series while diodes D3 and D4 are reverse biased and the current flows through the
load
2.) Using LTSPICE, connect the given full-wave bridge-type rectifier circuit with filter
capacitor C1 = 100 microFarad. Using transient simulation, plot the waveforms of: (a) current
along filter capacitor C1 with C1 = 100 uF; and (b) output voltage across resistor R1 with C1 =
100 uF. Change the capacitance of filter C1 to 10 uF. Plot again the waveforms of: (c) current
along C1 with C1 = 10 uF; and (d) output voltage across R1 with C1 = 10uF. Change again the
capacitance of filter C1 to 1000 uF. Again, plot the waveforms of: (e) current along C1 with C1
= 1000 uF; and (f) output voltage across R1 with C1 = 1000 uF. In 1 to 2 sentences, briefly
describe the operation of filter capacitor in a power supply circuit.

(a). the waveform of current along the filter capacitor C1 with C1 = 100uF
(b). the waveform output voltage across resistor R1 with C1 = 100uF

C. Plot the waveform of current along C1 with C1 = 10uF

(d). the waveform of the output voltage across R1 and with C1 = 10uF

(e). the waveform current along the C1 with C1= 1000uF

(f). the waveform of the output voltage across R1 and with C1 = 1000uF

The capacitor increases the DC voltage and decreases the ripple voltage components of the
output.
3.) Using LTSPICE, connect the given full-wave bridge-type rectifier circuit with filter capacitor
and surge resistor. Using transient simulation, plot the waveforms of: (a) current along rectifier
diode D1; (b) current along filter capacitor C1; and (c) output voltage across resistor R1. Remove
the surge resistor R2 in the circuit. Plot again the waveforms of: (d) current along rectifier diode
D1; (e) current along filter capacitor C1; and (f) output voltage across resistor R1. In 1 to 2
sentences, briefly describe the operation of surge resistor in a power supply circuit.

(a). the waveform current along rectifier diode D1

(b). the waveform of current along the filter capacitor C1

(c). the output voltage across resistor R1

(d). the waveforms of current along rectifier D1 (Remove R2)

(e). the waveform current along the filler capacitor C1

(f). the waveform of output voltage across resistor R1.

Surge protector is connected between the rectifier circuit and the capacitor filter circuit, so that
during initial charging when high current is flowing through the circuit components it minimizes
its effect. It provides impedance during excessive current flow.
4.) Using LTSPICE, connect the given Linear Power Supply circuit with full-wave bridge-type
rectifier (D1, D2, D3, D4), with filter capacitor C1, with surge resistor R2, with bleeder resistor
R1, and with voltage regulator (R3, D5). Using transient simulation, plot the waveforms of: (a)
current along rectifier diode D1; (b) current along filter capacitor C1; (c) voltage across bleeder
resistor R1; (d) current along series resistor R3; (e) current along Zener diode D5; and (f) output
voltage across load resistor R4. In 1 to 2 sentences, briefly describe the operation of a linear
power supply circuit.

(a). the waveforms current along rectifier diode D1

(b). the waveform of current along the capacitor C1

(c). the waveform of the voltage across the bleeder resistor R1

(d). the waveform of the current along the series resistor R3

(e). the waveform of the current along the Zener diode D5

(f). the waveform of the output voltage across load resistor R4
