Leadership and management are not same but definitely interlinked and
complimentary, separation of both of them will create more problem than
solving the issues. – (Allan Murray, The Wall Street Journal Guide To
Management ) The managers duty is to plan, organize, direct, control ,
cooperate , coordinate , ability to direct , At the same time- The leaders
duty is to motivate, inspire , creative thinking , honesty , ability to
challenge , confidence etc. A leader and manager always need to
upgrade themselves through following some managerial and leadership
traits that uplift the individual. In throw a light on- Warren Bennis 1989,
the scholar justifies that – to exist in the twenty first century the
organization does not requires managers but more and more leaders
.”Managers do things right and leaders do right things” - (Bennis
2007) . Managers advocates cohesion but on the other side leader press
for change ( Harvard business school- professor, John Kotter )
Leadership is different from management , leadership isn’t esoteric and
magical, it has nothing to deal with glamour and allure! But the major
point is, management and leaders- according to the majority people
support that management and leaders are complimentary and both are
required effectively and efficiently. Both leadership and management
include determination to achieve the desired goal . { The Guardian,
2013}, the basic role of the team is to achieve the goal. Managers and
leaders perform their role according to the assigned power . i.e
managers perform it formally but leaders use their inspiration and vision
for align their followers . the list of attributes are presented as the
extreme of the continuum , but so many business executives do not
follow these extremes below,
Leaders are idealists, managers are bureaucrats - leaders hate the
status quo, they barely believe that the work that is performed by them is
perfect in quality or in the view of cost , and they run after their product
to improve the product, always target on making the product more
trending and best in contrast to everything , but managers on the other
side focus more on controlling costs and targeting their personal
interests , which results in lack of knowledge of the product .
Leaders motivate and inspire people, managers inspect and
control: leaders motivate the people they perform the duty with and
exhibit their nature on a day to day basis , leaders get involved actively
in the conversation and give credits to active participators because that
involves honesty and trust, and check out that how much the group
members are getting involved in the participation , whereas managers
only target on results , extra rewards for overtime workers, and the
betterment in their duty from the past reports ( Plucknett, Douge -2014 )
Leaders act according to the decision , managers act responsibly :
leaders focus on the whole task with the result, so according to the duty
the leader reacts , but the manager isn’t concerned with the intermediary
process but on product, cost , employee etc.
The leader takes risk, but manager manages ; the leader has to be a
risk taker that includes longevity , and have the mindset of stepping out
from the comfort zone and tolerate the risk taking , and a manager has
to be a risk manager because in an organization it is very necessary to
manage risks with minimum resources.
Manager uses people, leader develops them : a manager uses people
for his benefits but leader does it for the results and the success of the
workplace , the manager only commands “ go” but leader commands “
let’s go”
Manager says” i” , leader says “we”: manager himself has to act like
a boss, and he interprets everything by himself , but on the other side
leader takes innovations, ideas from the other peers too.
Managers depress, leaders impress : because manager acts
individually and has to perform alone , but leader manages with the
group and impresses colleagues .
