Concrete - developments

 Stronger concrete will have all the desirable properties.

 1995 survey report -National Cooperative Highway Research Programme

(NCHRP), USA – premature deterioration of concrete bridges built with OPC
– lack of durability.

 Even in India premature deterioration of concrete structures within 10-20

years.
Concrete - developments

 Durability was greater challenge than the strength of concrete.

 Special attention to durability aspects of concrete inIS:456-2000.

 Incorporation of mineral admixtures such as GGBS, Flyash, Silica fumes ... in

codes mainly to enhance the durability of concrete.

 IS:456 also permitted the use of PPC and PSC.

Concrete - developments

Infrastructure development is undergoing transformation. It has been

recognised that the use of OPC alone or using OPC in high percentage in
concrete is not only coming in the way of Greener construction
(Sustainability) but also leads to many disadvantages in particular with the
following:

a. Drying shrinkage
b. Excess heat of hydration
c. Continued increase in permeability
d. Lack of resistance to chemical attacks
Concrete - developments

Strength Durability Sustainability

Sustainability

 It is the ability to sustain or capacity to Endure.

 To make our natural resources available to our
future generation.
 Use of natural resources responsibly without
harming Environment.
 It is doing more with less(Natural resources)
 “I need” based living not “I want” based living.

Clause 8.2.8 of IS: 456-2000

Concrete in sea water or exposed directly along the sea coast

shall be M20 Grade in case of plain concrete and M30 in case of

Improved Corrosion Resistant
Portland slag cement/GGBS lead to increase electrical resistivity of concrete and reduce
diffusivity of chloride ions from outside. The resistance to corrosion of reinforced steel in
concrete is enhanced due to less proportion of chloride ions available in pore solution.

Improved Sulphate Resistance
The Portland Slag Cement containing active slag in required proportion offer an
improved resistance to sulphate attack because of depletion of Ca(OH)2, lower C3A
content as well as improved water tightness of concrete.
