CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study


In Indonesia, there’s many interesting things we can do and we can look at.
Indonesia has many beautiful traditional dress. For the tourist, they usually want to
try use the traditional dress and take a picture for they saved. As well as traditional
dress, Indonesian cuisines are very delicious. A variety of flavors from various cities
make the taste of food in Indonesia to be diverse and interested to enjoy.

2.1 Indonesian Traditional Dress


2.1.1 Batabue Clothes from Padang
Batabue Clothes is a clothes for a women in West Sumatera. Batabue clothes
also called Bundo Kanduang. Usually the colors are red, black, violet, and blue.
The motif of Batabue Clothes is a typical motif of West Sumatera with a
sparkling of gold thread. With a color that is not so striking, the motif of the
gold thread makes this traditional dress beautiful.
2.1.2 Sesapur Clothes
Sesapur clothes is from Lampung city. Sepapur clothes usually used by
traditional dancers and many of them is a woman. Sesapur clothes color is white
on the upper, and on the bottom side there is a silver or gold coin shaped
decoration is hung in a chain (tassel).
2.1.3 Tessel Skirt
Tessel skirt is from Papua. Papua is the east side of Indonesia. The Tassel
Skirt is a traditional clothing for Papuan women in the form of a skirt made
from dried sagoo leaves and used as a partial covering for women's bodies and
sometimes used by men on certain occasions. Tassel skirts are usually used
together with headdresses made from palm fiber, cassowary feathers, or can also
use woven from dried sagoo leaves.
Both when wearing koteka and tassel skirts, women's traditional clothing is
the same as traditional Papuan men's clothing in general who will not wear tops,
like other tribesmen who wear their traditional clothes. Papuans will only
disguise their upper body using paintings or tattoos made from natural ink. The
motifs of the tattoo itself are very diverse. But generally not far from the typical
flora and fauna of Papua.

2.1.4 Jawi Jangkep Clothes
Jawi Jangkep is a shirt for men. This dress is an official dress from Central of
Java. Jawi Jangkep consists on upper in the form of a beskap shirt that usually
has a floral motif, while for his subordinates a jarik cloth wrapped around an
available belt. Besides that, usually for had more handsome and enchanting
impression, it is necessary to add some complementary accessories, such as
keris, footwear, blangkon for head cover and jasmine flower wrapped around
the neck.
This is the most popular traditional dress in Indonesia. Even many artists
from various countries come and really want to try this traditional Javanese
traditional clothing.
2.1.5 Mukuta and Biliu Clothes
Mukuta and Biliu is a clothes for a marriage ceremonies. Mulkuta is for a
groom and Biliu is for a bride. Mulkuta and Biliu is traditional dress from
Gorontalo city. Usually tourists try to use this traditional clothes as a couple and
they believe if they use this clothes they will everlasting and get married
together.
2.1.6 Ulee Balang Clothes
Ulee Balang clothes is a traditional dress from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam.
At first, the traditional clothing of Ulee Balang was only worn by the royal
family. However, gradually this clothing was used as traditional Acehnese
traditional clothing.
In tradition, men wear long sleeved tops made from silk named Peukayan
Linto Baro. Meanwhile, for his subordinates in the form of black woven cloth or
called Sileuweu. Do not forget to also use a head covering or Meukeutop and
decoration weapons typical of Tanah Rencong.
Well, for Aceh's traditional clothes for women usually use clothes brackets
and tight pants ferret. The traditional clothes are adapted from various cultures
ranging from Malay, Chinese, and Arabic.

2.1.7 Sapei Sapaq and Ta’a Clothes
Sapei Sapaq and Ta’a is a traditional dress from North Kalimantan. Sapei
Sapaq is for a man and Ta’a is a clothe for a woman. Ta'a clothing consists of a
kind of headband called a da'a, made from pandanus. Usually, people who used
this clothes is they who gets old.
His superiors were called sapei inoq, and subordinates of the clothing were
skirts known as ta'a. Sapei sapaq clothing for men is not much different in style
from ta'a clothing.
2.1.8 Pangsi Clothes
Pangsi clothe is a traditional dress from Banten. Pangsi is a clothing suit in
the form of a plain shirt and loose pants and the length does not exceed the
ankles. This clothing is generally worn by men and is a typical clothing from
several tribes in Indonesia, like Betawi and Sundanese.

2.2 Indonesian Cuisines


2.2.1 Satai Madura
Satai is a chicken that is cut into pieces and put together in a wooden stalk
and eaten by being bitten through the wood. As it names, satai Madura is from
Madura city. Satai Madura is a typical Indonesian food in the form of chicken
satay typical of Madura.
Satai Madura has been famous throughout the archipelago with its distinctive
spices. Satai Madura is a mixture of finely ground nuts with a little onion. Satai
Madura is also one of the attractions for tourists who come and want to taste
Indonesian cuisine.
2.2.2 Rendang / Randang
Rendang is a meat dish with herbs and spices originating from Minangkabau,
Padang city. This dish is produced from a cooking process that is heated
repeatedly using coconut milk until the broth is completely dry. The cooking
process takes many hours (usually around four hours) until all that remains is a
thick black piece of meat and bran. At room temperature, rendang can last for
weeks. Rendang which is cooked in a shorter time and the coconut milk has not
dried up is called kalio, which is light golden brown. This is the most popular
cuisines in Indonesia.

2.2.3 Taliwang Chicken
Taliwang Chicken is a typical Lombok Island food from Kampung Karang
Taliwang, Mataram City, West Nusa Tenggara which is made from chicken
meat.
Chicken meat served comes from young native chicken that is burned then
seasoned with a kind of sauce whose ingredients include dry red chili, shallots,
garlic, tomatoes, fried shrimp paste, kencur, brown sugar, and salt.
Usually taliwang chicken is made a little spicy, so the taste will get strong.
But there is many people made taliwang chicken with a sweet taste.
2.2.4 Kerak Telor
This is the most favorite foods by Indonesian people taste. The survey said
77% Indonesian people choose kerak telor as their favorite foods in Indonesia.
Kerak telor is a Betawi traditional spicy omelette dish in Indonesian cuisine.
It is made from glutinous rice cooked with eggs and served with serundeng
(fried shredded coconut), fried shallots and dried shrimp as topping. It is
considered as a snack and not as a main dish. The vendors of egg crust are easily
the most ubiquitous during the annual Jakarta Fair and it has also become a
must-have menu item for visitors at the event.
Each of the portions is made by order. The egg crust vendor puts a small
amount of sticky rice (English: sticky rice) on a small wok pan and heats it on
the charcoal fire. Add an egg (chicken or duck, but duck eggs are considered
more delicious), and add some spices and mix it. The dish is fried on a wok
without any cooking oil so the omelette will stick on the wok and enable it to
put it upside down straight against charcoal fire until it is cooked. The spicy
serundeng (sweet grated coconut granule) with dried salted shrimp and dried
shallots are sprinkled upon the omelette.
2.2.5 Gudeg
Gudeng is a traditional Javanese cuisine from Yogyakarta and Central Java,
Indonesia. Gudeg is made from young unripe jack fruit (Javanese: gori,
Indonesian: young jackfruit) stewed for several hours with palm sugar, and
coconut milk. Additional spices include garlic, shallot, candlenut, coriander
seed, galangal, bay leaves, and teak leaves, the latter giving a reddish-brown
color to the dish. It is often described as "green jack fruit sweet stew".

2.2.6 Rujak Cingur
Rujak cingur is one of the traditional foods made from a mixture of
ingredients such as cucumbers, cingur, kale, pineapple and others. This food is
very rich in a mixture of ingredients, because in it there are some vegetables,
fruits, and other ingredients. Rujak Cingur is a traditional food that is very well
known in East Java, especially in the Surabaya area.
2.2.7 Meatballs
Meatballs is an Indonesian meatball, or a meat paste made from beef surimi.
Its texture is similar to the Chinese beef ball, fish ball, or pork ball. The word
meatballs may refer to a single meatball or the complete dish of meatball soup.
Meatball noodles refer to meatballs served with yellow noodles and rice
vermicelli, while meatballs gravy refer to meatball soup served without noodles.
Meatballs can be found all across Indonesia, from street vendors to high-class
restaurants. Along with soto, satay, and siomay, meatballs are one of the most
popular street foods in Indonesia. Today, various types of ready-to-cook
meatballs are also available as frozen foods sold in supermarkets in Indonesia.
Meatballs are one of the most popular street foods in Indonesian cities and
villages alike. Traveling street vendors, either by carts or bikes are often
frequenting residential areas in Indonesia, while meatball stalls and humble tent
foodstalls are often sprung on street sides in Indonesian cities. The meatball
came to international attention when the United States President Barack Obama
remembered it as one of his favorite foods from his childhood in Indonesia, and
mentioned it in his speech.
2.2.8 Pempek
Pempek, or mpek-mpek, or empek-empek is a savory Indonesian fishcake
delicacy, made of fish and tapioca, from Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia.
Pempek is served with rich sweet and sour sauce called vinegar sauce or cuko
sauce (lit. vinegar sauce), or just "cuko". Sometimes local people also eat the
dish with yellow noodles and diced up cucumber to balance out the vinegar's
sourness.

CONCLUSION

Indonesia has a lot of diversity. Starting from the culture, customs, traditional
clothing, and also cuisines. The conclusion drawn from this paper is that we must appreciate
each difference more and be proud of beauty in Indonesia. Learning what makes Indonesia
beautiful is a good thing. Expanding knowledge about diversity in Indonesia and being proud
to be the people of Indonesia.
