Who am I?
a short introduction
Hello, I am Sascha aka Duke and founder of Duke’s Paint Art. I started painting a
long time ago learning from Games Workshop. After a 7 year break, I came back to
miniature painting realizing that there was much more to learn and improve. So I
started again calling this point zero. Connecting with many other awesome painters I
was able to learn from the best and develop my style and technique. 2019 become a
very important year with several events:

· Collaboration with Vallejo and Redgrassgames

· Founding of Duke’s Paint Art Team
· Birth of a beautiful daughter!

Important information

I'm doing this all for free.

Of course, my time is limited and such tutorials keep me from my work. It also cost me money.
Please support me with a small donation so that I can create such PDF’s and Youtube videos in the
future. Besides, it comes my Website to good around raffles and cool things to offer.
I have thought of something great. If you send me a donation of 45€ plus postage, you will receive a 30
mm miniature painted by me from my universes.
For a small donation, my PayPal account is at your disposal.

Prime
zenithal priming
This part absolutely up to you. I choose to prime the miniature with an airbrush.
But it is fine to use any undercoat primer of your choice. As always, take your time,
don’t rush and just prime outside of your house.

Don’t forget to check your miniature for any mold lines and get carefully rid of it! It
is always a good practice afterward to wash your miniature before priming and
clean it up with a toothbrush.

Prime
„There is only grey in my world“
I started to spray Vallejos Surface Primer
Dark Grey all over the miniature.
Afterward, I sprayed with Vallejo Surface Primer
Grey from another angle all over
the miniature again too, for a such
called, zenithal priming effect.

▪Spray angle: 45 degrees

Base Color Cape
„A long road begin“

This color scheme is very important. It

will be used for the cape, boot’s, mask,
Pants, and gloves. Make sure you have
enough on your palette.
You will need it!

Basecoat of Batman
„I can feel the change in the wind“

I create a mix of Dark Prussian Blue,Pancer Aces

Periscopes and Black in a 50:40:10 ratio. Paint it
smoothly in thin coats over the cap, boots, helmet
and gloves.
▪ Count your drops from the bottles. It helps
you to keep the correct ratio. As example:

„Nothing's in my way“ Ratio 70:30

In my mix of the base colors, i create a

street on my wet palette, by RedGrassGames,
from the darkest point to the brightest part.
For the light, I take 71089 Light Sea Blue and 1
drop of 72001 Dead White to improve the light.

I go over all the high parts of the cape

and mask with my mix with several layers.
It is important not to destroy the deepest part
because they are the shadows. Just paint the
highest parts.

I go further with a drop of white.

Skin
„Batman begins“

It ain't much but at the end, behind the symbol and

mask is humanity. I go ahead and give Batman
some flesh tones. I started painting the mouth and
cheeks with Vallejos Tan 72.066.

Flesh
I made a mixture of 80% Tan 20% Dead White and
gently paint the face parts and give him fine
highlights to the face.

To provide more expression and dramatic I made a

self mix of Red Wash and a Blue Wash to get a
Purple Wash
Ratio 70% Red 20% Blue and 10% of a thinner.
By adding this wash make the face more
expressive.
I paint the Bat sign black.
Optional: paint the lips with a little bit pink in your Colors Tan
mix diluted with one drop of distilled water. Colors Dead White

„The Dark Knight Rises“
That cape is not done yet. After some drying time
it is time to go back to our wet palette and add
some more color to our hero.

Second Light On The Cape

„Shadows only exist with Light“

So now is the part where we go back to our

street from the darkest to the brightest point.
And now we use my WBS technique.
WBS. Wet-Blend-Stippling technique!
Add more white in your mix.
Some drops of water or Thinner Medium 70.524
will make it easier. And you don’t ruin your brush,
unlike the normal stippling technique.

Stipple with the brush every highpart slowly

brighter.
Be gently and practice a little bit. Here is an
example. I used the WBS for the Body.

If you don’t understand this technique check the

Edge Highlighting
„Love your curves and all your edges“

For the edges I use a mix of Light Sea Blue and 1

drop white 1 drop Persiscopes.
Hold the brush crooked and just stroke over the
edges.
The paint can be slightly thinned with water or a
medium.
It is helpful to keep the miniature correctly and
sometimes it requires strange positions.

Edge Highlight
Highlight all the blue parts and base the
Body!
„Can you see me?“

Now we must highlight the Details on the Mask,

Cape, Hands and some other small things like
nose and fists.

Use the same color from edge highlight mix from

page 11 and paint gently with a detail brush be
careful the parts of the mask and the rest.

For the base of the Body, I use Vallejos French

Brush Size 0
Mirage Blue 70.900 and bring it very clean on
his body. Colors AV Light Sea blue with Dead White mix
Shade and Glaze!
„The Night is my ally“

Time for shade and glaze our Hero.

First, we deepen the shadows with a self-mixed
shade of our base colors but add more black and
dilute it very strongly. my suggestion for the
mixture is 1 drop of Prussian blue 1 drop of
periscope and 4 drops of water. Alternatively, you
can use Citadels Drakenhof Nightshade. We
carefully apply our shade to each well.
t's up to you where you want the shadows to be
stronger, just experiment. Brush Size 2
Colors AV Preussian Blue/Persiscope

Dont understand deep shade no prob just see the video:)

https://youtu.be/XfJo36PO3oU
Glaze!
„A little fight in you. I like that.“
„Then you're gonna love me.“

A glaze causes the opposite of shading. If applied

correctly, it only remains on the raised areas and
changes or reinforces the color pigments. You can
make a glaze out of any color - it must be diluted
very strongly with water until the colors become
transparent.
A simpler possibility is to use a transparent one from
Vallejo. Before applying it you should wipe off the
filled brush on a tissue so that the excess water is
drained off.

My mixture for the glaze: 2 drops Vallejo 71.089 Light

Sea Blue
6 drops of distilled water.
Hint of the day
A glaze makes wonderful
transitions between 2 colors.
If you want to see what you can do
with glazes
check my video on my youtube
channel^^
https://youtu.be/AQSdEo7Pe-I

The tissue thing!

Apply your glaze „only“ on the highlight

parts of the miniature.
Try to experiment with this technique.
God bless we are at this point now!
Shading the body.
„Speaking of which, do you know how I got these
scars?“

Now comes the easy part. I shade the body

with a mix of Armypainters Dark Tone and
Quickshade
Medium.
Ratio: 4:2
Take a Size 2 brush and go over the complete
body. Remove all excess places. I call them
Quickshade Puddles. Brush Size 2

Colors Armypainter
Let it dry and watch how DarkTone/Quickshade Mix
well this work is done from a dark tone. Now all Medium
muscles, scars, and deepenings come
beautifully well.
You can repeat this step but be careful
otherwise it gets too dark.

Highlight the Body!

I used my WBS again with a mix of
French and Light Sea Grey 50/50
Don’t be afraid here is also a video^^

Belt
„Everybodys knows his belt“

I have some color suggestions so that you

can decide which you like best.
Important is it starts dark and ends brightI
have some color suggestions so that you
can decide which you like best.
Important is it starts dark and ends bright.
I always use the thinner of Vallejo for my
mixes it keeps the color moist longer but also
weakens it a little bit.

My mixture for the base:

AV Model Color 70.921 English Uniform

For first highlight:

AV Game Extra Opaque 72.151
Heavy Goldbrown

Last Highlight:
AV Model Color 70.847 Dark Sand and go
further with
AV Model Color 70.858 Ice Yellow

For the Shadows between the belt parts I use

AV 72.091 Sepia Game Ink

Also I highlight the Bat sign with edge

highlight and a mix of AV Black and Light Sea
Blue up to white on the rare part of the
edges..
Last light for body and paint the eyes and
draw some fine black lines between the
body parts and the cape!
„Arise“

I take a detail brush for the fine black lines and paint
the body parts between cape and body and belt.
You can do this with a black wash or a good diluted
black.

Body highlight with my WBS technique.

Take 1 or 2 drops of white in your first light color.
To weaken the white I use one or two drops of ivory
in my mixture.
To intensify the light effect of the figure I use a fine
detail brush and paint the light at some places on
the body. Always in the same direction.

https://youtu.be/aCk-TC7bh58
Optional body shading
„Feel my muscles“

To increase the shadows of the muscles and so on

I mix black and 2 drops of water and paint/support
with a detail brush all shadows between the muscle
areas.

Brush Size 0
For more intense I pant some fine spots light on Colors AV 72051 Black
his body. Focus The Muscles
I mix a little bit ivory in my light mixture to get a
smooth brighter color.
