1 Engine Inoperative Operations

General:

The 1 engine inoperative altitude capability is much less than for 3 engine ops under the same conditions.
In losing one of the three engines you lose 33% of the thrust, and approximately 33% of the 3 engine altitude
capability. Typically, 1 engine inop means altitude capabilities in the mid 20’s. (eg: FL230 east, FL240 West)

• You will be expected to cruise at an IFR level in the ATPL examination.

• Long Range Cruise is the only speed schedule for 1 Engine Inop operations.

Example 6. A B727 has an engine failure and is climbing to the highest IFR FL available.

Track is 140M (ie: EAST). Planned TopC GW 72, 500 kg. TopC temp is ISA +5C.

What is highest IFR level with 1 Engine Inop in these conditions ?

Working:

TopC GW ISA ISA +5 ISA +10

75, 000 kg 25, 100 ft 24, 150 ft 23, 200 ft

Round down to FL250 highest available.
72, 500 kg 25, 225 ft
Answer !
70, 000 kg 27, 100 ft 26, 300 ft 25, 500 ft

Example 7. A B727 has an engine failure and is climbing to the highest IFR FL available.

Track is 330M (ie: WEST). Planned TopC GW 75, 000 kg. TopC temp is ISA +10C.

What is highest IFR level with 1 Engine Inop in these conditions ?

Working:

TopC GW ISA +10

75, 000 kg 23, 200 ft Round down to FL220 highest FL available tracking WEST. Answer!

Example 8. A B727 has an engine failure while cruising at FL310 and descends to the highest IFR FL
available with one engine inoperative.

Track is 335M (ie: WEST). Planned level-off GW 71, 000 kg. 1 Eng Inop temp is ISA +8C.
For the purposes of this question you may disregard fuel burnt during the descent from FL310.

What is highest IFR level with 1 Engine Inop in these conditions ?

Working:

TopC GW ISA ISA +8 ISA +10

75, 000 kg 25, 100 ft 23, 580 ft 23, 200 ft

Round down to FL240 highest FL available
71, 000 kg 25, 372 ft tracking WEST. Answer!
