In A Minute Challenge

Assign Date: Monday, March 4, 2019


Due Date: Friday, March 8, 2019
Team Size: Individual Assignment

Objective: To create a one-minute documentary using your voice or Text and images from the
National Archives (catalog.archives.gov)

Preproduction: Choose a topic from the archives catalog that you will be able to complete a
video in the time frame allotted. You can use photos and videos from the archives, but you need
to provide the voiceover. This means you need to record your topic using a microphone, field
recorder or your smartphone.

Production: Once you have your topic, you will need to search for photos and videos to
download to your L1 Server computer. You will need to write a one-minute script to describe the
situation. Think about Who is the topic about, What is the topic about, When did this occur,
where did this happen, and Why did this happen?

Postproduction: Upload your files to the L1 Server in order to not lose your hard work. Using
Adobe Premiere you will need to edit all the footage together to create a meaningful and thought
provoking documentary.

Exporting: You will export the file as a H.264 file to your L1 Folder.
The file name should be lastname(s)_In_A_Minute. (Example:
manuel_In_A_Minute.mp4)

Criteria: :60 second film


Only can use items from catalog.archives.gov and sites contained within
Title slate provided by Manuel

Points: Final Product 50 POINTS (Project Grade)

THE ASSIGNMENT
1. :60 seconds long
2. You need to tell the story of the subject in :60 with text and/or Voice Recording
3. This is an Individual project
PRE-PRODUCTION
Choose a category
o Use catalog.archives.gov to find your topic.
o Tell Mr. Manuel your topic to be sure it has not been taken

Research your topic


o Who is the topic about?
o What is the topic about?
o Where did this take place?
o When did this occur
o Why did this occur
o How did this happen or How did we get here.
o Using catalog.archives.gov find and collect images and photos that will help you tell
the story.

Gather you visuals


o Download these items by Right-Click (Save As) to your L1 Drive File Folder. DO NOT
SAVE TO DESKTOP

Script
o Write your script that explains in sixty seconds (:60 seconds) what happened. Keep it
short, simple and to the point
PRODUCTION

Record your Audio


o You can use your smartphone, zoom digital recorder, or a microphone.
o Don’t like your voice? Get a friend or relative to read the script you wrote.

Use Text
o You can use text instead of recording audio.
o Be sure to use a font that can be seen.
o You might want to place a box behind the text with a 50% opacity to make the image
come slightly through.
POST-PRODUCTION
Open Adobe Premiere

Create a new Project called “In A Minute”

Create your video!


o Import your images that you downloaded from the site catalog.archives.gov

Record your Audio (If you are using it)


o You can use your smartphone, zoom digital recorder, or a microphone.
o Don’t like your voice? Get a friend or relative to read the script you wrote.

Import your audio (If you are using it)


o You will need to either email the audio file or download from your phone (if you used
your phone)
o If you use the Zoom recorder, upload the sound file from the SD card
Create your video!
Make sure you put images and videos in an order that makes sense (think timeline)
Edit
o Change your image every 5 seconds.
Add titles and transitions.
o Do this while you edit.
