What is a Noun?

The simplest definition of a noun is a thing and nouns are the


basic building blocks of sentences. These things can represent a
person, animal, place, idea, emotion- almost anything that you
can think of. Dog, Sam, love, phone, Chicago, courage and
spaceship are all nouns.

Noun Examples: Respect, faith, apple, peanut, motorcycle

Noun examples in the following sentences are in bold for easy


identification.

1. The boy and girl were holding hands as they crossed the
bridge on the way to town.

2. I love watching my cat play with the pink yarn.

3. It is raining! Everyone, grab your umbrella and rain hat and


watch out for the puddles!

Categories of Nouns:

There are several categories of nouns, and there can be an


overlap across the categories.

 Common Nouns: Name people, places of things that are not


specific.
Example: Woman, mountain, city, ocean, building, airline.

 Proper Nouns: Name specific people, places or things.


Example: Walt Disney, Mount Everest, North sea, England,
Fluffy, Sun country.
 Abstract Nouns: name nouns that you can’t perceive with your
five senses.
Example: Love, wealth, happiness, pride, religion, history.

 Concrete Nouns: Name nouns that you can perceive with your
five senses.
Example: House, ocean, Uncle Mike, bird, banana, flowers.

 Countable Nouns: name nous that you can count.


Example: Bed, cat, movie, train, country, book, phone.

 Uncountable Nouns: name nouns that you can’t count.


Example: Milk, rice, snow, rain, water, food, music.

 Compound Nouns: are made up of two or more words.


Example: New York, photograph, sunlight, snowflake, pigtails,
tablecloth.

 Collective Nouns: refer to things or people as a unit.


Example: Bunch, team, group, family, band, village, team.

 Singular Nouns: name one person, place, thing or idea.


Example: Cat, sock, ship, hero, monkey, baby, match.

 Plural Nouns: name more than one person, place, thing or idea.
Example: Cats, socks, ships, heroes, monkeys, babies, matches.

Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the given nouns for the
following exercise. Use each noun only one time.
