Gender differentials in farming efficiency and profits: The case of rice production in the
Philippines
Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. _____________________________
ii. _____________________________
iii. _____________________________

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/

activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought – that

women are not involved in farming.
ii. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
– that women make essential contributions to our agricultural and rural
economies in the Philippines. That women here in the Philippines engage
more intensively in agricultural activities than men.
iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought – that within
the statement that women engage more intensively in agricultural works,
their contributions are highly in demand.
iv. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
– that even though women do their voluntary works to help develop our
agriculture, they are still undervalued. As a result, they are not given the
opportunity to handle big projects in relation to agriculture and they face
barriers in specific agricultural aspects.
v. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought – that in
farming, gender inequality won’t be a big deal because it’s for everyone’s
choice to save and develop our agriculture here in the Philippines.
vi. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
– that farming is not an exemption towards the raging effect of gender
inequality. Based on the article, female-headed agricultural households
tend to have lesser income rather than the normal households that men,
handles. Maybe they’re just using this data to encourage agricultural
organizations to stop supporting female-headed households because most
of the people really tend to think of the way that women can’t handle
things men do. That women are being undervalued in a sense that they
are being disregarded because they are women. Thinking about the
stigma that they can’t do farming because they are women, they can’t
handle things mostly men do every day, and things that discriminates the
aspect of being a woman.
3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas
you want more explanations about?
i. Why the people tend to think of the tradition rather than practicality?
ii. Women now are valued. But why is it that there are still cases that
women are being discriminated?
iii. When will it happen that men will be treated as men, and women will
be treated as women?
