DISTINCTION BETWEEN PRIMARY SOURCES AND SECONDARY SOURCES

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. What are primary sources
ii. What are secondary sources
iii. What is the difference between the two sources

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought -that sources

have no distinction. Sources are from the past happenings on a specific
event or time. That there is no primary nor secondary sources.

ii. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize -

that there are two distinctive types of sources that can be used based on
what source you need. Primary sources are considered as contemporary
accounts of an event, personally written or narrated by an individual
person who experienced the said event. While secondary sources refer to
interpretations, or remakes of a primary source. Mostly, this type of
sources are just the insights of the author, he or she didn’t experience the
event that he or she wrote about.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought – that the
examples of primary sources and secondary sources are similar. They just
differ in who wrote the exact source.
iv. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize -
that the examples are different. Some examples for primary sources are
photographs, voice and video recordings. Other written examples are
diaries, journal entries, letters, memoirs, journals, speeches, interviews,
minutes reports, artworks, and artifacts. While some examples of
secondary sources are the analyses of primary sources by experts,
academicians, and professionals. Most of this are published works such as
journals, articles, reviews, books, conference papers, and documentaries.

v. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought – that the

ways to distinguish a primary source to a secondary source is only by
author. Whether the author is present on the event or the author only
analyzed the source.

vi. However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize –

that there some questions to be answered to know whether the source is
primary or secondary. First is “How did the author know about the given
details? Is he or she present in that event? How much time did the author
need to gather the details of the event?” Second question is “Where did
the information come from? Is it a personal experience, or a report made
by another person?” and lastly, “Did the author conclude based on a single
source, or on many sources of evidence?”. So, when all of these questions
are answered based on what source you want to have or know, that’s the
time that you knew how to differentiate primary source to secondary
source.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?)
i. Why is it important to know if it is primary or secondary source?
ii. What are the benefits of having such knowledge on differentiating the
two types of sources?
iii. What are the effects of knowing how to differ two sources in our
history?

4. Clarification (What are the areas of the text that are still unclear to you?)
i. When was this idea emerged?
ii. Who came up with the idea to classify primary and secondary sources?
iii. What are the basis of understanding towards conducting such type of
research?
