Describe the symmetries in each design.

A. Finite Design (2 types: [i] with rotations; or [ii] with rotations and reflection).
1. Classify as [i] or [ii] then describe the rotations or reflections, whichever applies.

ANSWER:
In this design, it is classified as the finite designs with rotations and reflections. Because if you
fold the design in half, you will notice that they’re exactly identical and the rotation applies on
pattern present in the figure of the design as well.

2. Classify as [i] or [ii] then describe the rotations or reflections, whichever applies.

ANSWER:

In this design, it is also a finite design with rotations and reflections. You will easily notice the
reflections of the design from both sides. And the rotation of the figures are in this design are constantly
repeating by set.
B. Frieze Patterns (7 types – see textbook). Classify as Type 1, Type 2, … , Type 7 as described in the
textbook. Then describe the symmetries involved.
1. Design 1

ANSWER:

The type of this design is the Border design with Vertical Reflection and Rotation. Because the
symmetries of this design are purely by pattern and the way it is done is through reflecting the first
pattern then rotating it to form the next symmetry.

2. Design 2

ANSWER:

The type of this design is the Border Design with Horizontal and Glide Reflection. It is because
the symmetry is continuous and it uses reflection to portray the whole design.
C. Wallpaper Designs (17 types). Identify the pattern and describe the symmetries.

ANSWER: p4m pattern.

This group has four axes of reflection. The axes of reflection are inclined to each other by 45° so that four axes
of reflection pass through each order 4 rotation center. Every rotation center lies on some reflection axes.
There are also two glide reflections passing through each order 2 rotation, with axes at 45° to the reflection
axes. p4m is very common and is easy to recognize because of its square lattice.
