Calculation of △S in Different Processes
Example Two copper metal blocks of same mass and dimensions are at temperature
27°C and 127°C respectively. Now they are brought in contact to attain thermal
equilibrium. Find the entropy change in the process ? (Given mass of each block
= 31.75g & Cp = 20 cal/mol)
Example A carnot cycle has an efficiency of 40%. It’s low temperature reservoir is at 7°C.
What is the temperature of source ?
Example The latent heat of vaporisation of water is 540 cal/g at 100°C. Calculate the
molar entropy change when water is converted into vapour at 100°C.
Example 2 mole of an ideal gas is expanded isothermally and reversibly from an initial
volume of 2 dm3 to 10 dm3 at 27°C. Calculate the change in entropy of the system,
surrounding and universe.
Example Five moles of an ideal gas is expanded isothermally from 10 bar to 2bar against a
constant external pressure of 2bar, at 27°C. Calculate △Ssys, △Ssurr and △Suniv.
Example Consider two moles of an ideal monoatomic gas initially at 27°C and 1 atm
pressure, undergoing the following reversible cycle :
A. Isothermal compression at 2 atm
B. Isobaric temperature increase to 127°C
C. Return to the initial state by a different path. Calculate △S for each state.
Example One mole of an ideal monoatomic gas is expanded adiabatically from 20bar,
127°C to 1 bar against a constant external pressure of 1 bar. Calculate△Ssys,
△Ssurr and △Suniv.
Example The expansion process of 2.0 moles of argon proceeds so that the gas pressure
increases in direct proportion to its volume. Find the entropy increment of the
gas in this process provided its volume increases 2.0 times.
Example A reversible heat engine absorbs 40 kJ of heat at 500 K and performs 10kJ of
wok rejecting the remaining amount to the sink at 300 K. Calculate the entropy
change for the source, sink and the universe.
Example A carnot engine operates between 327°C and 117°C . It absorbs 120 cal/cycle
from the source. Find the thermal efficiency and heat rejected per cycle to the
sink.
