- Lychee is an attractive and rare tropical fruit tree that bears a luscious red fruit. The lychee
originated over 2000 years ago in low elevations of Southern China. The lychee tree is native
to Southern China and South Eastern Asia. It was widely cultivated for its prized fruit even
before 1766 BC. (Para 1)
- The Chinese consider the lychee, which is a red, heart-shaped fruit, a symbol of romance
and love. China, India, South East Asia and South Africa are among the major producer
countries of lychee. The most popular varieties grown in South Florida are the Brewster, the
Hakip and the Mauritius. (Para 2)
- The fruit consists of a single dark brown seed, covered by a sweet – acid tasting, white,
juicy, translucent pulp, which is rich in vitamin C. It may be eaten fresh, frozen, canned in
syrup, or dried to produce ‘litchi nuts’. The trees make beautiful landscape specimens with
their dark green leaves and bright red fruit. (Para 3)
- Lychees need full sun, but young trees must be protected from heat, frost and high winds.
Air layering is the most common method of propagating lychees because grafting is difficult
and seedlings are not reliable producers of quality fruit. (Para 4)

- As all our pets soon acquired names of their own, my goat was named Tinker Bell, after the
fairy in the story of Peter Pan. There was something of the fairy about Tinker. Her feet
seemed to have springs as she skipped daintily. (Para 1)
- I tied a little bell round her neck and always knew it by its tinkling where to find her. At
night, she slept curled up at the foot of my bed and woke me up in the morning by licking my
feet. She loved an early morning walk and was in many ways a better companion than a dog
as she did not wander off on her own or get into quarrels with cats, stray dogs or porcupines.
(Para 2)
- The only things she chased were butterflies and she would jump into ditches and slither
down hilly slopes in her eagerness to follow them. Goats grow fast unlike Peter Pan and the
fairies. Tinker Bell’s appetite began to increase too. She was very fond of flowers. The leaves
of the sweet-pea, the nasturtium and the geranium were her favourites. (Para 3)
