THESIS PROJECT REVIEW

- Fecal coliforms in the affluent.

1. ABSTRACT
In this research thesis, secondary treatment of domestic
wastewater is carried out by third generation Downflow
Hanging Sponge reactors (DHS).
The diameter of the reactor is 0.11m, the height of each
column is 0.60m and the separation between the columns 4.2. DEPENDET VARIABLES

2. OBJETIVES
4.3. INTERVIUOS VARIABLES
1. - pH
2.1. OVERALL OBJETIVE - Environmental Temperature.
 Evaluate the conversion rates of nitrogen present in
domestic wastewater.
 Evaluate the removal of fecal coliforms. 5. EXPERIMENTAL SETUP

2. SPECIFIC OBJETIVES
 Measure nitrites, nitrates and ammoniacal nitrogen.
 Quantify Fecal Coliforms.
 Determine the pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen,
conductivity, turbidity, Total Solids, Fixed Solids, Volatile
Solids and biochemical oxygen demand on the fifth day
(BOD5).
 Know the operational problems in the DHS reactor.
 Evaluate the results ratios of nitrogen with pH,
temperature, dissolved oxygen and BOD5.
 Quantify the retained sludge in the settlers.
 Quantify the sludge (biomass) stored in the sponges at
the end of the investigation.

3. HYPOTHESIS
With the third generation DHS reactor, as a post-treatment
system of the UASB reactor, removals greater than 80% of
nutrients (nitrogen) will be achieved in domestic wastewater
and a removal greater than 75% of Fecal Coliforms present
in the effluent of the UASB reactor.

4. VARIABLES
3.
4.1. INDEPENDENT VARIABLES
- Flow affluent.
- Wastewater temperature.
- Biochemical Oxygen Demand on the fifth day of
the affluent.
- Concentration of nitrites, nitrates and
ammoniacal nitrogen in the affluent.
