Synesthesia

According to Wikipedia, Synesthesia is a no-pathologic neurological phenomenon by

which two or multiple senses are associated. For example, synesthesia called “grapheme-color”
represent 65% of synesthetic, make that alphabet letters or numbers are perceived colorful. In
synesthesia called “numeric synesthesia”, numbers are all systematically associated to special
positions. In other types of synesthesia, music, sound and number, day of the week and month
can be perceived colorful, have a particular form or a particular spatial disposition. Another
form called “ordinal/linguistic personification synesthesia” make personality associated to
colors. Form-color associations are more widespread, while other that involved tastes and
smells are rarer.

For example, if we tested a “normal” person and a synesthetic by exposing them a grid
of numbers. We will put multiple “5” and only a few “2” in a certain ship. For a “normal”
person, seeing the 2 will be kind of tricky because the “5” and “2” have almost the same shape
but in reverse. At contrary, synesthetic will automatically spot the “2” in a triangle form. That
is because of their ability to associated numbers with colors and distinguished easily the
different numbers.
The origin of synesthesia is in part genetic and hereditary. It is transmitted by certain
chromosomes. Basically, it is when the brain is not completely done to be constructed and at
the birth all the neurons are still all together. What it means is that all of his/her senses are
connected together. It is acquired from the birth, the person is called “synesthetic”, and/or
induced by hallucinogenic substances. It seems to be a hyperactivity induced by serotonergic
system (serotonin which is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system). An education to
poetry could develop those synesthetic capacities.

In most of the cases, people endowed with this amazing ability are artists or in the art
domain. In fact, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams (Chromesthesia), Charli XCX (Chromesthesia),
Vincent Van Gogh (Chromesthesia) and more artists. Indeed, some of them can see music, that
is a very special capacity.
I discover this special phenomenon when I was on my Instagram page. I came across
this video (in French) and found out it was a really interesting subject and I think not much
people know this phenomenon.
