CHAPTER 1
PRELIMINARY
A. Background
Resistor is a basic electronic component that is generally used in electronic circuits or
other electrical circuits with the main function of inhibiting / limiting the amount of input
current or current flowing into a circuit, where the ability of the resistor to limit the inrush
current according to the resistor specifications. As the name suggests, resistors are
resistive and are generally made of carbon.
From Ohms's law it is known, resistance is inversely proportional to the amount of
current flowing through it. The unit for resistance in a resistor is called Ohm with the
symbol Ω (Omega).
Generally, various types of resistors are made of different materials and properties or
characteristics. Besides that, another specification that needs to be considered when
choosing a resistor in a design is the wattage. Because the resistor works with the concept
of electric current flowing, then there will be a condition called power dissipation in the
form of heat of W = I2R.
The greater the physical or size of a resistor, then this will be directly proportional to
the greater ability of the resistor's power dissipation. Resistors on the market are available
in sizes 1/8, 1/4, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 watts, where resistors have a power dissipation of 5, 10
to 20 watts.
But generally for the type of resistor that is larger (jumbo) the resistance value is
printed directly on the body so that it can be seen, for example 100Ω 5W. Resistors
generally have a long, rectangular cubic shape that has a white base color, although there
are also other shapes such as cylinders.
CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION
A. Definition of Resistor
Resistors are one of the most common components found in Electronic Circuits.
Almost every Electronic equipment uses it. Basically a resistor is a Passive Electronics
component that has a certain resistance or resistance value that serves to limit and
regulate electrical current in an Electronic circuit. Resistor or in the Indonesian language
is often referred to as a barrier or prisoner and is usually abbreviated with the letter "R".
The Resistance or Resistance Resistance Unit is OHM (Ω). The term "OHM" is taken
from the name of the inventor, Georg Simon Ohm who is also a German Physicist.
Schematic Symbol resistor is divided into two versions, namely the US version and
the European version, although there are differences in the resistor symbol but you are
free to choose. Although you are free to choose the resistor symbol you want to use, it's
important to remember that you shouldn't mix or use the two symbols in a series.
Here are the different symbols.

Material Resistance To Resistor

Resistors can be made from a number of different materials, different material resistance in a
resistor will determine the quality of the resistor.
Following are some of the most common materials used in making resistors
1. Carbon Composition
Having low to medium power, tolerance and satatability resulting from carbon composition
resistors are relatively poor, besides that it also produces more noise than other types of
resistors.
2. Carbon Film
Has a low power, tolerance and stability produced is pretty good, and does not produce a lot
of noise.
3. Metal Films
Has low to medium power, tolerance and stability resulting from this type of ressitor is very
good, besides that almost no noise is produced.
4. Wire Rolls
It has high to very high power, very good tolerance and good stability, besides that almost no
noise is produced.
A. How to make resistors

For example the ceramic core has a value of 1 ohm before being cut can only be used to
produce resistors from 1.2 ohms to 8.6 ohms. While the type of material 10 ohms can
only be cut into resistors with a value of 10 ohms to 100 ohms. Material and how to make
resistors are very specific, the denser the cutting distance the greater the value of the
resistor produced.
1. Terminal Resistor Installation Process
At this stage both ends will be installed jumpers or wire legs by using welding points. The
ceramic core that has been cut is electrified at both ends of the metal, then the jumper
wire which is also electrified is touched. As a result, there is a surge in the junction of the
wire and metal until they are fused. After welding, the length of the leg will be adjusted
so that it has the same length. This process aims to make it easy for users to easily attach
resistor components to the PCB hole.
2. Coating Resistor Process
At this stage there are 2 processes:
• Anti-rust coating, this aims to avoid the oxidation process that causes changes in the
value of the resistor during storage or use.
• Epoxi coating, aims so that the core of the resistor is not easily damaged due to
deformation, the core needs to be coated with an epixi layer, this layer that looks brown
on the surface of the resistor.
3. The coding process or color coding
In the final stage, the resistor will be color coded according to the value of the resistor
made. Color coding is a common standard in grading resistors.
4. The Process of Giving Ribbons
Some resistors are further processed by mounting paper tape on both sides. This aims to
facilitate the insert process on the Auto insert machine in the process of automating
resistor installation.
CHAPTER III

CLOSING

A. Conclusion

Resistor is one of the tools that is often used in electronics which has an Ohm unit
with the symbol Ω (Omega). The core of making resistors is made of ceramic and the
greater the wattage resistor, the greater the diameter used. Then the resistor will be color
coded and each resistor has a different resistance value depending on the color code that
is on the resistor, because each resistor has a different color.

B. Suggestions

In making a resistor must go through long steps and must be thorough so that the
resistor can be used properly. With the completion of this paper the authors would like to
thank all those who participated in writing this paper. Do not forget the author realizes
that in writing this paper is far from perfection, for that suggestions and constructive
criticism is expected.
