Introduction
The purpose of this activity is to study how light reflects off a shiny surface, and how it
refracts when entering a transparent material.
Use the Answers Page (the last page) to input all your answers.
1 - Simulation: Reflection
The angle of incidence and reflection are labeled i and r respectively. You can vary i by moving the blue
dot at the the bottom. Use the following letters to provide your answers
E = Equal I = Increase D = Decrease G = Greater S = Smaller
1.1 If you increase i what happens to the value of r ?

2 - Simulation: Refraction
Search for the PhET website and go to the simulation entitled Bending Light
(https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/bending-light ). Run the simulation and select Intro
Light source: Ray. Material above: Air. Material below: Glass. You can move around the light source
and vary the angle of incidence. Use the following letters to provide your answers
E = Are equal I = Increase D = Decrease S = Smaller B = Bigger
2.1 If you increase the angle of incidence what happens to angle of refraction ?
2.2 How does the angle of incidence compare to the angle of refraction ?
2.3 If you decrease the index of refraction of the material below what happens to angle of refraction ?
Use the intensity detector located on the bottom left corner.
2.4 If you decrease the index of refraction of the material below what happens to the intensity of the
refracted ray ?
2.5 If you decrease the index of refraction of the material below what happens to the intensity of the
reflected ray ?
Set the angle of incidence to a value between 20 and 40 degree. Use the protractor located on the
bottom left corner to measure the angles of incidence and refraction.
2.6 Report the values of the two angles.
2.7 Does your measurement of the two angles verify Snell’s law ? If not check the measurements and
calculations.
Select Material above: Mastery B. Material below: Air. Repeat the procedure
3.2 What is the index of refraction of Mystery B ? (Hint: you need to use Snell’s law again)
4 - Simulation: Prism
4.5 As you change the color of the ray of light from red toward blue, how does the
refracted angle change?
S = Stays the same I = Increases D = Decreases

4.6 What is the name of the physical phenomenon effecting the white light
that you are observing ?
5 - Simulation: Lens
The basic principle on how a lens works (in order to magnify an image for example) is the
bending of light due to refraction. You will study more in details the process of image
formation on your next activity but the key concept is the notion of the focal point: a point
where the rays of light meet.
Focal point:
This point exists only if the refracting material satisfies precise geometrical conditions.

Comments:
In Exp. 1, the laws of reflection are verified as angle of incidence = angle of reflection.
In Exp. 2, the laws of refraction and Snell’s law are verified.
In Exp. 3, the critical angle is found as the angle in which the refracted ray disappears.
In Exp. 4, refraction in a prism is experimented on and the laws of refraction and the phenomenon
of dispersion is verified.
In Exp. 5, we experiment on lens and find out convex surfaces converge the rays of light.
