A waste facility located northeast of Strathmore has start-
ed to haul away material that has angered nearby residents
because of its smell, appearance and contents, but many resi-

The Green for Life (GFL) Strathmore Compost Facility gar-
nered an outcry from residents who report the site gener-
ates unbearable smells and contains potentially harmful com-
pounds, including asbestos and hydrogen sulphide (H2S).
“It’s been a nightmare,” said local resident Joe Vergouwen.
The smells allegedly originate from a deposit on the site of
decaying organic materials, referred to as the “legacy pile,” a
term that some residents find offensive, just like the odours
it emits.
“I don’t know why they call it a legacy pile – it’s rotten

Neighbours Against Pollution (NAP), a group of residents who
have fought against the conditions and practices at the site.

Happy Easter! When residents tested the contents of the dust arriving on
their properties, they found some samples contained asbes-
tos, a mineral that can cause respiratory illnesses and cancer,
at concentration levels exceeding provincial guidelines, he
added.
While Huxted is encouraged that “at least something is be-
ing done,” getting GFL to address the problem has been a
long and difficult road.
“It’s been a court battle all the way through; they’ve done
everything they could to delay and stall,” said Huxted. “These
guys promised way back in 2017 that in three months they
would have it all gone. We finally had to threaten to sue the

COVID-19 UPDATE
KEEPING WHEATLAND SAFE
Due to ongoing concerns with COVID-19, Wheatland County Administrative Office, Agricultural Services Board
Shop, and Public Works Shop will remain closed until further notice.

Wheatland County is acting in the interest of public safety, proactively responding to an evolving worldwide scenario
involving COVID-19. Community health and safety is our priority. We will continue to take further steps to help reduce the
risk to our residents, visitors and employees.

Wheatland County staff will still be monitoring emails and will also be available via phone. We ask that individuals with new
business to discuss call or email our staff, and visit our website to schedule a meeting.

Wheatland Family and Community Support Services also operates within the Wheatland County Administration Office. At
this time, their offices will be available by appointment only. Please call 403-934-5335 to schedule a meeting.

Information about Wheatland County’s programs and services is available on our website. Payments for utility bills and
property taxes can be made via online banking. Additional services, such as safety code permits, dog licenses, development
permits, etc. can be paid via credit card through our website.

Due to the suspension of the recycling facility and services at the Drumheller & District Solid Waste Association, Wheatland
County must also suspend our recycling services at all waste transfer sites. For the remainder of this suspension, waste
transfer sites will only be accepting bagged household residential solid waste. Construction, demolition, industrial or
commercial waste generators must make their own arrangements. Large loads (i.e. trailers, roll off bins, etc.) may be
rejected during the suspension of services. Transfer Stations are also unable to accept cardboard and newspaper recycling.
Please hold onto your cardboard and newspaper recycling until these services resume.

We thank you for your patience and understanding during this unprecedented situation.
