❖By, KARL EREKY

According to Ereky, all type of

work are biotechnology by which
products are produced from raw
materials using living organisms in
20th century
HISTORY
• Traditional biotechnology has been used for thousands of
years to produce improved food and health care products.
Today, modern biotechnology enables us to develop improved
products more safely and more rapidly than ever before
• It is the Manipulation of living organisms, systems to develop
products.
• In past biotechnologists used yeast cells to ferment alcoholic
drinks and bacteria to make cheese and yoghurt
DEFINITION
Pharmaceutical biotechnology consist of the combination of two
branches which are “Pharmaceutical Science” and
“Biotechnology”.

PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE: define as the branch of

science that deals with the formulation compounding and
dispensing of drugs

BIOTECHNOLOGY: define as the application of biological

system, living organisms, or their derivatives in making or
modifying products or processes for specific use.
Aim of Pharmaceutical
Biotechnology
• To design, produce drugs that are adapted to
each persons genetic make up, which can give
the maximum therapeutic effect.
Goals of Biotechnology
• To understand more about the processes of inheritance
and gene expression.
• To provide better understanding & treatment of various
diseases, particularly genetic disorders.
• To generate economic benefits, including improved
plants and animals for agriculture and efficient
production of valuable biological molecules.
Example: Vitamin A fortified engineered rice.
Pharmaceutical Biotechnological
Product
The common pharmaceutical biotechnology
products that are made by the pharmaceutical
companies includes:
• Antibodies
• Proteins
• Recombinant DNA Products.
Antibodies

• Antibodies are proteins that are produced by

white blood cells and are used by the immune
system to identify bacteria, viruses, and other
foreign substances and to fight them off.
• In the recent years, monoclonal antibodies are
one of the most exciting in developments
Proteins
• Proteins made of amino acids are large, complex molecules
that do most of the work in cells and are required for the
structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and
organs.
• Protein biotechnology is emerging as one of the key
technologies of the future for understanding the development
of many diseases like cancer or amyloidal formation for better
therapeutic intervention.
Recombinant DNA Products
It is genetically engineered DNA created by recombining
fragments of DNA from different organisms. Some of
the Recombinant DNA Products includes:
• Recombinant DNA Insulin
• Recombinant DNA Vaccines
• Recombinant DNA Drugs
• Recombinant DNA Enzymes
• Recombinant DNA Growth Hormone
• Recombinant DNA Proteins
• Recombinant DNA Yeast
RECOMBINANT DNA VACCINE
It is a vaccine produced through recombinant DNA technology. It involves
Inserting the DNA encoding

In an antigen (such as a bacterial surface protein)

stimulates an immune response
into bacterial or mammalian cells,

It expressing the antigen in these cells

Purification vaccine

Example :Hepatitis B infection is controlled through use of recombinant

hepatitis B vaccine.
