Liquid/Gas (L/G) ratio

Liquid/Gas (L/G) ratio, of a cooling tower is the ratio between the water
and the air mass flow rates. Against design values, seasonal variations
require adjustment and tuning of water and air flow rates to get the best
cooling tower effectiveness through measures like water box loading
changes, blade angle adjustments. Thermodynamics also dictate that the
heat removed from the water must be equal to the heat absorbed by the
surrounding air:
where:
L/G = liquid to gas mass flow ratio ,( Ib/ Ib) or ( kg/kg )
T1 = hot water temperature ,(°F)
T2 = cold water temperature ,(°F)
h2 = enthalpy of air-water vapor mixture at exhaust wet-bulb temperature
,( Btu/Ib )
h1 = enthalpy of air-water vapor mixture at inlet wet-bulb temperature ,
( Btu/Ib )
Cp = specific heat of the water , Btu/Ib.°F

L/G =

* Input Data : )p

1- T1 = 37.5 °C = 99.5 °F
2- T2 = 32 °C = 89.6 °F
3- h2* ( at Tfilm = 31 °C = 87.8 °F ) = 53.2 Btu/Ib
4- h1* ( at Tair = 27 °C = 80.6 °F ) = 33.5 Btu/Ib
5- Cp = 1 Btu/Ib.°F
6- L = 175 l/s = 0.175 m³/s = 175 kg/s

( 53.2 - 33.5 )

L/G =

= 2 ( Ib/ Ib) or ( kg/kg )

G = 0.5 L

Then G = ( 0.5 ) ( 175 kg/s )

= 87.5 kg/s / 1.2 kg/m³
= 73 m³/s
= 262800 m³/hr
= 154588 CFM

G = 154588 CFM
