Why do students walk to school when there are other modes of transportation available?
 Introduction

The researcher lives in a community not too far from school but would most times ride his cycle
since it takes a lot to walk; it’s near but yet far. Yet on his way to school he would notice some
students who attended the same school, New Campbellville secondary school, often times
walking from D” field Sophia to school and returning home the same way. The researcher chose
to investigate on this mode of transportation and seeks to find reasons why students walk to
school and the main benefits of students walking to school.
 Method of Data Collection

The researcher conducted a survey in which 30 students of grade 7 (Form One) were randomly
chosen. Data was collected by the use of questionnaire. Questionnaire was used since it is easily
administered and less time consuming. The method of data collection was judged to be
approximately due to the fact that the questions can be structured to gathered information only
for this investigation; the questions were clearly stated to prevent confusion so that they could
easily be answered. The questionnaires were given on 22 November 2019 to the students and
they took about ten minutes to answer all the questions.

Figure 1

The pie chart shows the main reasons why students walk to and from school. It can be seen that
56% or 17 student stated that school is close to home and they get to school early, while 23% or
7 students stated that their parent can’t afford to let them catch transportation to get to school and
back home, so walking to school is their only option , while 16% or 5 students stated that they
don’t want to waste money so they rather walk to and from school and lastly, it can been seen
that only 3% or 1 student stated that they like walk to school.

The column chart shows the main benefits for students who walk to and from school. It can been
seen that 46% or 14 stated that the benefit for them to walk to and from school is that they reach
to school early, while 33% or 10 students stated that the benefit for them is saving money, and
20% or 6 students stated that their benefit is exercise.
 Discussion of Findings

The researcher revealed the following findings:

 The reason for students walking to and from school is that school is close
to home.
 Parent can’t afford to let them catch transportation to get to school and
back home, so walking to school is their only option.

Benefits for students walking to and from school:

 Walking to and from school is that they reach to school early.
