projects 1&2:

My first two projects involved finding different ways to play

with light. While creating these projects I found that I was
able to manipulate the way that I created patterns of light
and that made an interesting random weaved pattern.

a c.

a. By using yarn on the wire frame I created, I was able to

create a weaved like pattern, which was interesting and
made for a unique lamp.

b. The light pattern that was created from the yarn weav-
ing also had an interesting and unique look to it.
d.
c. The use of symmetry with the lamps concealed behind
the panels helped to achieve the continuous glow from
behind the panels.

d. The concealed lamps behind the panels created the

diffused light effect I was hoping to achieve.

Inspiration:
After working on my first two projects, I realized that the
thing I enjoyed most about lamps and lighting was the
way in which the light was diffused and obstructed. This
created interesting and beautiful patterns of light, much
like the effect from my first project. I decided that I want-
ed to draw upon these aspects for my task to design a
lighting plan for a tube station.

a. d.

b.

a. The web-patterned ceiling of the Louvre Abu Dhabi as

proposed by Jean Novell allows for the light to stream into
the space creating a pattern of total randomness

b. The same patterned ceiling but this time showing its

pattern at a different time of day, literally creating a to-
tally different space.

c. The density and random pattern from the spaghetti

chair by pie studios, seemed like a creative way to ex-
press the image in my head.

d. Beijing National Stadium also known as the birds nest

became the inspiration for the random patterning in my
scheme

e. The oversized spiderweb motif is similar to the overall

look I wished to create with the use of poles and material.

Based on my inspirational images I was able to put pen
to paper and express my idea for the tube station lighting
scheme. I wanted to draw on the concepts from my first
two projects and enhance them to fit within the concept
of the tube station plan.

a c.

d.

b.

a. In this sketch of the far wall I was able to see how the
weaving pattern would appear to someone waiting for
the tube to arrive.

b. The same pattern but in a section shows how the weav-

ing will be more dense in the doorway sections to aid in
creating a nest like entry for users.

c. This perspective sketch shows how the curved poles will

follow the natural curvature of the tube station and the
pattern would then be weaved between each pole.

d. This sketched plan shows how the poles could be ar-

ranged to create a more interesting shape inside the sta-
tion.

Drawing on my design concept I was able to photoshop
elements of it into my design. In theory my design con-
cept would use a pvc cording material, which would con-
ceal the light, but still allow for passengers to be able to
view important signage. However I did want to provide
an example of how the material would pattern the light.
After several attempts I decided to use a thinner material
to show in my visual example because it still created the
overall look I was attempting to achieve.
