Worksheet- 1
Topic-1 Integers
1, 4, 0, 6, -3, -1 all are integers.
 Positive Numbers are greater than 0. Numbers
For Example- From the above set, 1, 4, 6 are
positive numbers.
 Negative Numbers are less than 0. Positive Negative
ZERO
For Example- From the above set, -3, -1 are numbers Numbers
negative numbers.
Therefore INTEGERS includes all positive numbers, 0, and all negative numbers.
 So, 0 becomes the centre if we represent these numbers on a line. This line is called as number line.

For example- Represent the following numbers on the number line.

-7, -4, 3, 6, -3, 5, 0
Solution- We will divide the number line in equal divisions like we have done below in eight
equal parts in the left and right side of 0. Then we have marked the given positive and negative numbers.

Topic 2- Addition of Integers

Rules for adding two integers. Follow the table given below-
Rule No. First Integers Second Integers Resulting Integers Example
1 Positive Positive Positive 23 + 31 = 54
2 Positive Negative Subtract the two integers and 45 + (-35) = 10
the sign of greater integer is We subtracted 35 from 45 and
chosen. placed positive sign to 10 as 45
was the bigger integer.
3 Negative Positive Subtract the two integers and -63 + 34 = -29
the sign of greater integer is We subtracted 34 from 63 and
chosen. placed negative sign to 29 as 63
was the bigger integer.
4 Negative Negative Add the two integers and put -32 + (-23) = -55
the negative sign.

Topic 3- Additive Inverse

The negative of any integer is called its Additive Inverse.
For Example- Additive Inverse of 8 is (-8) and Additive Inverse of (-8) is (–(-8)), that is 8.
Important Points: If a and b are two integers, then the following are true and a + b is also an integer.
This is called as CLOSURE Property.
 a + b = a – (additive inverse of b) = a – (-b)
 a – b = a + (additive inverse of b) = a + (-b)

To Do Questions

1. Arrange 7, –5, 4, 0 and – 4 in ascending order and then mark them on a number line to check your answer.

2. Can you find a pattern for each of the following? If yes, complete them:
(a) 7, 3, – 1, – 5, _____, _____, _____.
(b) – 2, – 4, – 6, – 8, _____, _____, _____.
(c) 15, 10, 5, 0, _____, _____, _____.
(d) – 11, – 8, – 5, – 2, _____, _____, _____.

3. Following number line shows the temperature in degree celsius (°C) at different places on a particular day.

(a) Observe this number line and write the temperature of the places marked on it.
(b) What is the temperature difference between the hottest and the coldest places among the above?
(c) What is the temperature difference between Lahulspiti and Srinagar?
(d) Can we say temperature of Srinagar and Shimla taken together is less than the temperature at Shimla? Is it also
less than the temperature at Srinagar?

4. Use the sign of >, < or = in the box to make the statements true.
(a) (– 8) + (– 4) (–8) – (– 4)
(b) (– 3) + 7 – (19) 15 – 8 + (– 9)
(c) 23 – 41 + 11 23 – 41 – 11
(d) 39 + (– 24) – (15) 36 + (– 52) – (– 36)
(e) – 231 + 79 + 51 –399 + 159 + 81

5. Simplify the following:

(a) 65+ (-13) + (-72) + (-8)
(b) 7- [6- {5+ (1-3+4}]
(c) 5- {3- [2- (2+ (-3)+1) + (3-5)]}
