Problem 1: What is (20%)
1.
A. Multiple choice (at EMAS)
B. What is the physical significance of the Reynolds number, Prandtl number, and
Schmidt number, and tell why the numbers are important to transfer phenomena?
C. Imagine that peoples are measuring the speed of a boat on the river. One person
stands on ther riverbank and records speeds as a boat move past her field of view. A
second person is in the boat that moves at the speed of the river and record of the
first boat at the same time as the observer on the riverbank. Describe condition under
which the observer in the boat will measure speeds that are faster and slower than
the speeds measured by observer on the riverbank?

Problem 2: Velocity profile (30 %)

A laboratorium analyst hired by SNI for checking product quality from companies that
produced chilli sauce. PT. A claim that they have a product with pouring velocity 20% slower
than PT. B and PT. C. To evaluate this, the analyst try for tilting the bottle to pour the bottle
sauce from all companies. The data show that the angle needed for the chilli sauce to start
flowing is 10o for PT. A, 30o for PT. B, and 5o for PT. C. determine,
a. Boundary condition
b. Velocity profile
c. Velocity of sauces from all companies if assume the package is silinder with
diameter 1 cm and length 15 cm.
d. Is the claim true?

Problem 3: Poiseuille’s Law (15%)

Pressure drop of biological fluid of banana puree is flowing at 25 oC with a velocity of 1.02
m/s through a smooth pipe 10 m long having an inside diameter of 13 mm. The fluid is non-
Newtonian and viscosity follows the power law, µ = m (dVz/dr)n-1, µ in Pa s, m=6, n=0.454
and density of banana puree is 976 kg/m3. Calculate the pressure drop for the flow in the
pipe. (see Truskey’s book pp:92-97, Ans: 250 kN/m2)

Problem 4: Microscopic bio heat transfer (20%)

The core temperature of the human body is 37.0 °C, and the skin, with a surface area of
1.40 m, has a temperature of 34.0 °C. (a) Find the rate of heat transfer out of the body under
the following assumptions: the average thickness of tissue between the core and the skin is
1.20 cm and the thermal conductivity of the tissue is that of water, (b) what rate of heat
transfer would you expect if the skin temperature 40°C.

Problem 5: Macroscopic bio heat transfer (15%)

Heating a home to 60 oC and leaving it at that temperature for several hours will, in fact, kill
the Covid 19. The Coronavirus will be eradicated at 55 oC. Therefore, heat treatment will kill
and eliminate viruses living on surfaces in your home. When you make water heat treatment
of 65 oC to kill Covid 19, how many kilograms of hot water (75 oC) must you mix with cold
water (25 oC)?. The total mass of the water (hot plus cold) is 200 kg. Ignore any heat flow
between the water and its external surroundings.
