2. Cautions

Make sure to read thoroughly the cautions below before starting a work during installation,
inspection or maintenance.

Fixing the Counterweight

Make sure to fix the counterweight inside the column to the column with bolt before removing the
X-ray tube and the collimator. If the counterweight is not fixed, the MUX-10 may become
unbalanced and extremely dangerous.

Caution on Waveform Adjustment

Make sure to take the following action to prevent charging before observing the IGBT gate
waveform. If the IGBT gate waveform is observed in two positions at the same time in the
charged status, an accident may be caused.
Remove the fuse F4 from the INPUT PCH-99 PCB.
Make short-circuit the CP3 (CHECK1) and the CP4 (CHECK2) on the X CONT PCB.

Caution on Power ON

Do not turn on the power while the extension NEXSC PCB is provided.
If such a PCB is provided, the MUX-10 may malfunction.

Caution on High Voltage Generation

Do not generate high voltage while the high voltage cable and the X-ray tube are not connected.

-3-
TSFE-X01010

Prevention of Electrical Shock (1)

Turn OFF the power before starting maintenance of the inside of the cabinet. Even if the power is
turned OFF, electric charge may remain for a while. Make sure that the LD1 on the INPUT
PCH-99 PCB is lit off before starting maintenance.

Prevention of Electrical Shock (2)

After disconnecting the high voltage cable, make sure to let the high voltage plug pin be in contact
with the grounded portion so that the plug pin is discharged.

Prevention of Charge

When touching a PCB, make sure to wear the wrist band for prevention of static electricity so that
charge can be prevented.

Protection against Radiation

When checking the filament of the X-ray tube or visually checking discharge inside the X-ray tube,
make sure to take proper protective action such as use of lead glass.

3. Features of MUX-10

The features of the MUX-10 regarded as important to service are described below.
3.1. Super Maintenance Function
The initial setting mode and the adjustment mode are available without setting the DIP switches on
the NEXSC PCB. Refer to Appendix D in the Installation Manual.
3.2. FVR Adjustment
The MUX-10 offers two adjustment modes, the “two-point adjustment mode” in which the CPU
calculates other data after the operator has adjusted only two points in the FVR table and the
conventional “all-point adjustment mode” in which the operator adjusts all data in the FVR table.
Perform adjustment in the two-point adjustment mode in installation and adjustment, then confirm
the FVR in the all-point adjustment mode.
3.3. Starter
The starter circuit is assembled in the INVERTER UNIT PCB. The starter starts in 1.6 sec at
125V, and is driven intermittently at every 10 sec in the steady state.
3.4. Measured Value Display Function
Exposure for 32 msec or more is required to use the measured value display function. Have this
fact in mind in adjusting the FVR.
3.5. TMA Waveform
The TMA waveform is of 1 V/50 mA. In conventional units, the preset TMA value was
displayed for 10 msec after exposure was started. In the MUX-10, the preset value is not
displayed.
3.6. Exposure Counter/Error Log Display Function
The MUX-10 has the function to count the number of times of exposure and to restore the error log.
Refer to Appendix B in the Installation Manual.

from power source and find the cause of the trouble. The main switch may be defective, the fuse
may be blown out, or the DC power supply may be defective.

9.2. When X-ray Tube Rotation Sound Is Abnormally Large

Prepare the noise meter, and measure the rotation sound. When the measured value is 65 dB or
more at the distance of 1 m, the X-ray tube is abnormal.
→ Contact the Quality Assurance Department in Medical Systems Div. of Shimadzu
Corporation.
The rotation sound may be temporarily large in the early period (within 3 months after delivery),
and may return to the normal sound after a while (due to sticking of the solid lubricant of the
bearing). The skid time can be used to judge the rotation status of the X-ray tube. If the period
of time from rotation at low speed to stop by inertia is 1 min or more, the X-ray tube is normal.

9.6. Countermeasures against Error Messages

Error messages displayed on the panel are described in detail, and the countermeasures are
described below.
9.6.1. H1 and H2
The CPU calculates the accumulated heat capacity based on previous exposure, then issues these
alarm messages. If an either of these messages is issued even while there is not so many exposure,
check the voltage of lithium battery and initialize the CPU.
9.6.2. H3
When the thermal switch of the X-ray tube is activated, this message is issued. If this message is
issued even while the X-ray tube is not hot at all, check the thermal switch signal.
9.6.3. F01 and F02
(detected by software)
F01: The supply voltage is higher by approximately 20% or more than the normal value .
F02: The supply voltage is lower by approximately 30% or more than the normal value .

9.6.8. F14 (KV BRAKE)

Abnormal measured tube voltage or X-ray tube discharge is detected (by the hardware).
This error message actually postulates discharge in the high voltage system (especially the X-ray
tube). This error may be eliminated by aging. Perform aging first.

Perform aging.

Same error occurs again.

High voltage cable may be poorly

contacted. Refer to "Appendix G

Same error occurs again.

① X-ray tube,
② High voltage cable,
③ High voltage
transformer,
④ X CONT or NEXSC
may be defective.

Judgement in the last item in the flow chart above is difficult. Abnormality in a PCB means that a
false error message is issued, but the possibility is regarded as low.
If an either of the following phenomena is detected, it can be clearly determined that discharge has
occurred in the high voltage system.
1. Discharge sound “pop” is issued during exposure.
2. The error message is not issued at low kV, but is issued while the kV is rising.
3. The glass is clearly clouded (due to evaporation of the target material) when seen from the
X-ray tube irradiation port.
4. The target is clearly rough when seen from the X-ray tube irradiation port.
5. Spark discharge like thick thunderbolt can be seen at the time of exposure from the X-ray tube
irradiation port.
(Make sure to take protective measures against radiation such as use of lead glass.)

An aluminum filter is provided in the X-ray tube irradiation port. When checking the inside
of the glass tube, remove the lead cone fast, then remove the aluminum filter also.

11. Explanation on Each PCB

11.1. NEXSC-MUX10

Function
This is the CPU PCB which controls the MUX-10 using the software. Different from the
NEXSC PCB used in other generators and fluoroscopy units, this NEXSC PCB is not equipped
with an optical cable connector. (The NEXSC PCB equipped with an optical cable connector can
be used in the MUX-10.)
The following data is stored in this PCB. It is recommended to back up the following data in
preparation for PCB replacement.
Initial setting data
FVR value
Phototimer tube voltage correction value
APR
Number of times of exposure
During PCB replacement
When replacing the PCB, set the DIP switches first, then initialize the PCB. After that, perform
the initial setting, adjust the FVR, adjust the phototimer, and register the APR.
