Advent

Advent is the period of four Sundays and weeks before

Christmas. It means “coming” in Latin; the coming of Jesus into the
world. Christians use this season to prepare and remember the real
meaning of Christmas.

There are three meanings of Advent. The first, happened about

2000 years ago when Jesus came into the world as a baby to live as
a man and die for us. Second, can happen now as Jesus wants to
come into our lives. Lastly, will happen in the future when Jesus
comes back to the world as King and Judge.
Christmas and Epiphany

Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ.

It is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then
come back to life. It is celebrated by people around the world. It is a
time when family and friends come together and remember the good
theings they have.

Epiphany is celebrated 12 days after Christmas and is the

time when Christians remember the Wise Men ( Three Kings) who
visited Jesus. Some Churches celebrate Epiphany to commemorate
and remember both the visit of the wise men and esus’ baptism.
Lent

Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good

works in preparation of the celebration of Easter. Lent comes from
the Anglo-Saxon words ‘lenten’ which means “Spring”and lenctentid
which means not only “Springtide” but was the word for “March”,
the month in which the majority of Lent falls.

Since the earliest time of the Church, there is evidence of some

kind of Lenten preparation for Easter. Some think that they ought
to fast for one day, some for two, others for still more; some make
their day last 40 hours on end. These variations in the observance
of lent came much earlier, in the time of our forefathers.
Paschal Triduum

In the whole Christendom, the most solemn celebration each

year is the Paschal Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and
Easter) or the celebration of Jesus’ passion, death, and
resurrection. This celebration dates back as far as the 4 th century.

Holy Thursday is a very special celebration of the two

sacraments- Sacrament of Holy Orders and the Sacrament of the
Eucharist. The celebration of the Chrism Mass is also very special,
because we witness the bishop and the priests of the diocese
renewing their promises.
Easter (Pentecost)

Easter is the celebration of Christ’s resurrection from the

dead. It is celebrated on Sunday, and marks the end of Holy Week,
the end of Lent, the Last day of the Easter Triduum, and is the
beginning of the Easter season of the liturgical year.

Since Eater represents the fulfillment of God’s promises to

mankind, it is the most important holiday on the Christian
calendar.
Ordinary Time

Ordinary Time means ordered or numbered time. It is

celebrated in two segments: from the Monday following the Baptism
of Our Lord up to ash Wednesday; and from Pentecost Monday to
the First Sunday of Advent.

The vestments are usually green, the color of hope and growth.
The Church counts thirty-three or thirty-four Sundays of Ordinary
Time, inviting her children to meditate upon the whole mystery of
Christ.
