Avon High School-Home of the Braves

Memorandum

Dear Mr. Wagner,

For the past few months, I had the opportunity to work with Suzanne Freeman
in the library at Avon High School. During our time together, we evaluated the
library program using the 2016 Judy Serritella Exemplary Library Media Self-
Evaluation Rubric. Through this evaluation, we discovered the library is
functioning at an overall exemplary level. However, there are some areas of
improvement. Four areas on the rubric were evaluated as proficient. One area
was scored at a basic level.

It is evident that Suzanne Freeman works diligently to meet the needs of

students and teachers. Suzanne keeps detailed plans for meeting standards for
all grade levels based on the New York State 2019-2020 Information Fluency
Continuum. She uses and updates plans on eDoctrina to help teachers adapt
and implement lessons using 21st century skills. She also assists teachers with
modifying and creating rubrics and assessments.

Suzanne has created a space that is welcoming, engaging, and fun. The various
areas in the library meet the needs of diverse learners. There are areas for
students to collaborate, play, create, research, read, and meditate. The library is
always buzzing with activity. Although the library program has a full-flex
schedule with before and after school hours, Suzanne doesn’t provide evening
hours on a regular basis.

Technology integration has been fully implemented at Avon High School with
the adoption of a 1:1 device program during the 2019-2020 school year.
However, the library doesn’t have adequate wiring to support device charging. A
plan for updating wiring should be set in motion so students have continual
access to their device within the library.

Please review the following action steps to make adjustments to the library
program.

Sincerely,

Jessica Shuff
Action Steps

Basic-Category 4 Facilities, Access, and Resources: Square Footage

Although the square footage of the library exceeds the requirements based on
FTE, the electronic wiring does not meet the needs of the collection. Since every
student has a Chromebook, adequate charging stations or plugs should be
added so students don’t lose access to their devices in the library. An additional
20 plugs should be added throughout the library during the 2020-2021 school
year.

Proficient-Category 4 Facilities, Access, and Resources: Scheduling

Suzanne has a full-flex schedule so students and classes are able to access the
library and its services throughout the day. The library is opened before and
after school. However, this area scored proficient because Suzanne does not
offer evening hours for students and families. In order to move to exemplary in
this area, Suzanne and her library clerk could offer evening hours 4 times a
month or once a week. This will assist families and students who do not have
internet access at home, and it will allow for equitable access for all.
