– 2) Hot worked rod or bar diameter ≤ 140 mm and the axial length of the part
is approximately parallel to the metal flow lines of the stock

– 3) If Hot worked rod or bar diameter > 140 mm, but ≤ 205 mm is used, the
minimum required thickness of the component shall be calculated using
50% of the specified allowable stress and the axial length of the part is
approximately parallel to the metal flow lines of the stock

• the guidance suggested for weld metal impact testing requirements is not
universally applicable,
• Weld metal impact testing depends on the metals being welded and the
dilution of the weld metal by each of the base metals being joined.
• This means the suggested guidance is not sufficiently accurate to be retained.

applicable to the base metal from which they were removed.

• Location of removal is changed as the location of the centerline in
the prepared test specimens.
• Test specimens can be full size or the largest obtainable sub-sized
test specimens
• with the width along the notch located fully within the specified
range of removal depth are acceptable
• The axis of the notch may be inclined to allow the root of the notch
to align parallel to the fusion line, if thickness permits.

● Similar phrases found throughout Section VIII, Division 1, were
revised accordingly as well.

• This change implies RT for nozzle or communicating chamber is required


• when the nozzle or communicating chamber itself exceeds the thickness
requirements of UW-11(a)(2), or
• if the shell and/or head (so the entire vessel) is designed for lethal service or
• as an unfired steam boiler exceeding 50PSI.
• However, Second sentence in this paragraph is unaltered.

● Minimum Fillet weld throat shall be maintained around the
circumference except
– For Fig. UW-16.1 (a) through (e) radial nozzle, calculate fillet weld leg dimension in
long. axis of the cylinder and this leg dimensions shall be used through out the
circumference.
– If OD of opening is same as OD of cylinder or If OD of nozzle is too large to make a
fillet weld, calculate fillet weld leg dimension in long. axis of the cylinder and this
leg dimensions shall be used through out the circumference to the max. extent
possible and fillet weld may be transitioned into full pen. weld.

● PT/MT can be waived for vessels if MAWP is less than or equal to 3.5 MPa
and below conditions are met
– For UCS materials, if UCS-66(a) governing thickness is max. 13 mm for Curve A and
max. 25 mm for curve B, C or D materials
– For UHA materials 304, 304L, 316, 316L, 321, and 347, the max. nom. material
thickness shall be 19 mm.
– For aluminum, aluminum alloy 3000/5000 series, and aluminum alloy 6061-T6 in
Part UNF, the maximum nominal material thickness shall be 25 mm.

UW-51 RADIOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION OF WELDED JOINTS
● Written RT procedure is required now. Exception is deleted.
● AUT in lieu of RT is allowed for all welds in which the thinner of the
members joined is 6 mm thick and greater
● Manual UT for repaired weld is allowed. However, the defect is not
required to be confirmed by the manual UT to the satisfaction of the AI
prior to making the repair.

● When pressure parts of two different P‐Number groups are joined by welding, PWHT
shall be the one applicable for the material requiring higher PWHT temperature-
Deleted.
● Engineering judgment shall be applied when selecting the PWHT temperature and
holding time to produce material properties suitable for the intended service.
● Alternatives such as welding with buttering as described in Section IX, QW-283 may be
considered.
● Same is stated in UHA-32(c ) also

● Maximum Holding temperature for P15E Group 1 material is revised
● For welds made with matching Grade 91 filler, the maximum holding temperature shall be
determined as follows:
(a) Ni+Mn ≤ 1.0%, max PWHT temperature shall be 790 °C
(b) 1.0% < Ni+Mn ≤ 1.2%, max PWHT temp. shall be 780 °C
(c) Ni+Mn > 1.2%, max PWHT temperature shall be at least 10°C below the lower critical
transformation temperature (Ac1)
● Ac1 shall be determined by measurement of that temperature for the specific heat of filler metal to
be used in accordance with ASTM A 1033. If so,
– Include filler metal Ac1 temperature in construction records
– Max. Vessel operating temp shall be 525 Deg °C
● Max. PWHT temperature shall be determined based on the weld with the highest Ni + Mn content

● PFHT shall be as per UCS-56
● However thin walled pipe and tubes (≤ 6mm) can have different heating/cooling rates
and hold times when the heat treatment method is demonstrated to achieve a thorough
heating of the pipe or tube.
● Cold-formed and bent P-No. 1 pipe and tube material having a nominal thickness ≤ 19
mm does not require PFHT.
● Cold-formed or bent P‐Nos. 3 through 5C pipe and tube materials having an OD ≤ 114
mm and nominal thickness ≤ 13 mm do not require a PFHT.

UHA-34 Liquid Penetrant Examination
● All austenitic chromium–nickel alloy steel and austenitic/ferritic duplex steel welds,
both groove and fillet, that exceed a nominal size of 3/4 in. (19 mm), as defined in UW-
40(f), and all martensitic chromium steel welds shall be examined for the detection of
cracks by the liquid penetrant method. This examination shall be made following heat
treatment if heat treatment is performed. All cracks shall be eliminated.
