Overview
his overview introduces you to the key features in Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard vector
T graphics software for designers and Web developers. Illustrator provides easy-to-use tools, editable
effects, and powerful productivity features to help you create professional-quality graphics for Web,
print, and emerging media such as wireless devices. And when you use Illustrator in tandem with other
Adobe software, you can take advantage of superior Adobe technologies such as cross-product color
management tools, Smart Object technology, and transparency.

Selective anti-aliasing Apply type anti-aliasing selectively to keep small text easy to read.
Optimization controls The Save For Web dialog box displays side-by-side previews of your artwork to let
you compare different compression options and select settings that keep the image quality high and the file
size low.
Dynamic data-driven graphics Design a template in Illustrator, and define elements within the template as
variables. Then generate an unlimited number of unique variations quickly by using scripts to replace the
variables.
Instant layer generation Use the Release To Layers command to shuffle objects from one layer onto
individual layers. Then export the layers in Photoshop format or as a Macromedia Flash (SWF) file for
animation in another Adobe application.
Image map generation Use the Image Map pop-up menu in the Attributes palette to define an image map.
Enter a URL, and Illustrator automatically generates a linked image map when you export the file in Web
format.

Blending modes Apply blending modes to blend the colors of graphics and type with the colors on under-
lying layers. By experimenting with different mode settings in the Transparency palette, you can create a
wide range of effects.
Masks Use clipping masks to cut an object away from its background, or create opacity masks to let
elements on an underlying layer show through an object.
Fills Paint objects by filling them with solid colors or patterns. Or use gradients to produce painterly fills
that flow between multiple colors, similar to watercolors.
Multiple strokes and fills Select Add New Fill or Add New Stroke from the Appearance palette to apply
multiple strokes and fills to a single object.

Photoshop Preserve layers, masks, transparency, compound shapes, and editable type when passing files
between Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. Retain rollover and animation information in linked
Photoshop files when exporting from Illustrator as CSS layers.
InDesign Edit native Illustrator files directly in InDesign.
GoLive Drop Illustrator files inside GoLive and then double-click the files to launch Illustrator and make
edits. The changes appear automatically in the GoLive file. Export sliced AISVG files from Illustrator, and
fine-tune the optimization settings directly in GoLive. Import data-driven graphics templates into GoLive
for automated network publishing.
LiveMotion Export EPS and Macromedia Flash (SWF) files for use in LiveMotion. Export Illustrator
blends as SWF sequences that can be animated in LiveMotion. Double-click a placed Illustrator file to
launch Illustrator; any edits update automatically in the LiveMotion file.
After Effects and Premiere Import layered Illustrator artwork into After Effects, and integrate easy-to-edit
Illustrator graphics into your Premiere video productions.
AlterCast Create templates in Illustrator and define variable elements. Then use Adobe AlterCast image
server software to replace the variable text and graphics automatically and generate an unlimited number
of unique iterations of the design.
