CDB3062 & CDB3082 (Integrated Project)

Semester – Jan 2020

Theme of the Project: Zero Waste

Targeting Industry in Malaysia: Palm Oil; Rubber; Paper; Oil and
Gas; Food; Cosmetics; Pharmaceuticals; Fertilizer; Cement; Sugar etc.
Titles of the Project: Review on Zero waste from Malaysian Industry
under Solid, Liquid and Gas waste control

Facilitator: Dr Muhammad Ayoub & Dr Serene Lock Sow Mun

Introduction
Waste disposal from chemical process industries continues to rise due to massive growth in
population and industrial activity. Disposal of this waste continues to pose a serious challenge
to environment, which urges rising action on waste management and control. Tentatively, the
main goal of industry is getting closer to zero waste goal.

Guideline for Project and Presentation

Project
Below are the topics that related to the current environmental and sustainability issues. Each
group is required to select from one of the topics below to prepare a report and info graphic
poster. Choose any of Malaysian Industries:
1. Liquified natural gas
2. Electrical and electronic
3. Palm oil
4. Rubber
5. Oil & Gas
6. Metal manufacturing
7. Cement
8. Pulp and paper
9. Textile
10. Food
11. Cosmetics
12. Fertilizer
13. Pharmaceutical
Requirements for the project report.

1. Executive summary
2. Chapter 1- Introduction
3. Chapter 2- Problem statement and objective
4. Chapter 3- Conceptual design for zero waste: critical analysis and discussion
*Critical analysis and discussion on the topic with environmental and chemical
engineering elements (e.g. environmental laws and regulations, life cycle assessment,
process flow diagram, treatment processes and etc.). The discussions should not a pure
compilation from literature, but it should have comprehensive analysis (e.g. comparison
tables, advantages and disadvantages, mass and energy calculation, economic
perspective and etc.) with self- thoughtful reasoning and integrated comments
embedded in the discussions. Also, relates the discussion with Industrial 4.0. You may
have a few sub-sections.
5. Chapter 4- Process control for zero waste: critical analysis and discussion
*It is known that to achieve the objective of zero waste, the design should be equipped
with an effective waste control system to have a clean production process. Therefore,
based on the conceptual design in Chapter 3, effective waste control should be
implemented wherever applicable. The control system should be shown and elaborated
for all related sections in process flow diagram as well. Critical analysis and discussion
on the topic with environmental and chemical engineering elements as mentioned
above should be included to justify implementation of the control system. However, in
actual scenarios, there are a number of characteristics that have led to some critical
gaps in the effective and efficient control of the process in viewpoints of theory and
practice. Therefore, your group will also need to research on the current most
challenging concerns of process control in your particular chemical industry. Finally,
recommendations for the improvement of the problem stated should be provided at
the end of the report from the point of view of process control system and
instrumentation.
6. Chapter 5- Conclusion
7. Chapter 6- References

Remarks:

1. Minimize website-based references. All figures and tables downloaded from literature
should be cited properly. DO NOT simply copy-paste the figures and tables in the write-
up without any discussion. Redraw the figure and table if possible. The text to discuss
the figure or table should be placed before the figure/table. Remember to number the
figures and tables accordingly.
2. For referencing and citation in text, it is recommended to use ENDNOTE software but
not compulsory.
3. The report should be presented in a systematically way, in which the flow and each of
the section should be connected logically (required group discussion).
4. Format:
 Paper size: A4 size
 Font: Times New Roman
 Font size: 12 pt
 Line spacing: 1.5 spacing
 Reference style: Harvard referencing style
 Maximum number of pages: 25 pages (including list of references & appendix)
 File name: Lecture group- team group- title (e.g. Lecture G1- Group 3- Palm Oil)
5. Besides report, each group have to prepare an infographic poster as detail below:
 A4, one-sided page
 Encourage to use charts, pictures and tables rather than text
6. Report and poster submission due date: 13 March 2020 (Friday) before 12 pm.
 Submit the soft-copy of the report to muhammad.ayoub@utp.edu.my and
sowmun.lock@utp.edu.my
 Hardcopy is not required
 Subject in email: CDB3062 & CDB3082 Integrated Project Submission: File name
(as above)
 Content in the email: Group members
 ZERO mark will be graded if submission is late
 Plagiarism is prohibited. Zero mark will be graded to all group
members if plagiarism is detected (100 % similarity index).
 Similarity index should be less than 30 % through Turnitin checking (will
be announced later). Overall marks will be deducted if similarity index
is more than 30% (table below).
Similarity Index Penalties (% mark deducted)
<30% 0%
31-50 % 20 %
51-70 % 35 %
>71 % 50 %

Presentation
The presentation of the project will be carried out during Week 12 of the tutorial time.

Guideline of presentation:

1. Display the infographic poster on the wall.

2. Five to seven minute time is allocated for each group to present.

3. Each of the group members has to present. Your group may present the
general information, arguments and discussion on the topic. Details of
technical information could be included in the project report.

4. One question is allowed from the floor.
