Lab Session 02

1. Objective:
To define objective and generate requirements using affinity diagram.

2. Apparatus:
 Personal Computers
 Installed Real Time Board software
 Internet Services

Affinity Diagram (KJ Method):

Affinity diagrams are a special kind of brainstorming tool that organize large amounts of
disorganized data and information into groupings based on natural relationships. It was created in
the 1960s by the Japanese anthropologist Jiro Kawakita. It is also known as KJ diagram, after
Jiro Kawakita. An Affinity Diagram is used when:

1. You are confronted with many facts or ideas in apparent chaos.

2. Issues seem too large and complex to grasp.

3. Procedure:
Following are the steps that are to be followed in order to meet the objective of creating affinity
diagram for “Mobile Health Service”;

 STEP 1:
a) Install the Real Time Board software online.
b) Create your personal account on it using your email id so that you may access it.
c) Follow the steps as asked by the software to proceed.
d) Once the account settings have been completed, Real time Board is now ready for you.
e) The steps are illustrated in the following screenshots:

Account setting
 STEP 2:
Open the Real Time Board software with your email.
 STEP 3:
Create a new board.
 STEP 4:
Give the new board a suitable title if possible.
 STEP 5:
Select the New Frame and choose the suitable frame size according to your requirement of work.
 STEP 6:
By the use of tools available on the board, construct a frame containing the objectives and the
other easy accessibilities so that your friends feel it easy to respond you for which you will invite

them. (In example case, the textbox with any shape entitled with “Outcome Based Learning” and
a cloud of multiple notepads around it so the random ideas may be added on them can be good).

 STEP 7:
Invite the other friends to whom the work is to be shared and communicated by sending them
emails to join for the discussion or the objective.
 STEP 8:
The next step is now handover to your friends.
 STEP 9:
Once they accept your invitation, they can proceed their work using the Realtime Board.
 STEP 10:
The communication cloud has been developed now. All the invited friends can share their
random ideas about the objective for which you have invited them. In example case, the
objective is the “Outcome based Learning”.
 STEP 11:
Following instant screenshot has been taken under the communication using the “Real Time
Board”.

Brain storming

It can be seen from the screenshot that there are many users working on the frame with different
written sticky notes and some un-written sticky notes so the other users may fill them.

 STEP 12:
Complete the discussion by sharing the random ideas regarding the ongoing objective.
 STEP 13:
Once the random generation of ideas have been completed, start working on the next stage to
make the affinity diagram.

Ideas after brain storming

 STEP 14:
To construct the affinity diagram of the random ideas for the discussion topic, one of the member
is required to make the new frame on the same page or either by making another board add
inviting the friend as done in the initial steps.
 STEP 15:
Make the categories of the data collected accordingly with the sort of ideas generated. (In
example, for the OBE discussion, the random ideas generated in the previous steps have been
divided into Facility, Focus, Environment, Management and Content).
 STEP 16:
Once the categories have been completed, make the groups and decide a leader for each. Each
group is supposed to divide the given available random ideas into the categories made in the step
15.
 STEP 17:

5
Now, make the affinity diagram by giving the headings of the categories in column tabularize
form and then adding the divided ideas into their respective column one on one.
 STEP 18:
Complete the division of all the ideas and make the concrete affinity diagram.
 STEP 19:
The sample for the current discussion affinity diagram is given by:

Affinity Diagram

Thus the objective has been completed.

 Comments
From this lab it is concluded that we learn how to draw affinity diagram on the topic of mobile
health service with class discussion and ideas. Whole class is interconnected to present their
ideas and help draw affinity diagram using Real Time Board software. Real Time Board

software make each individual to present his or her idea freely through their interconnection on
the same board that results in a fruitful results or output.
