Digital Innovation Hubs

Digital Innovation Hubs support companies – in particular SMEs –

and public organisations in their digital transformation
Digital Innovation Hubs in Focus area (2019 and 2020)

 Focus area "Digitising and transforming European industry and services"

o DT-ICT-01-2019: Smart Anything Everywhere (SAE) Initiative, with the

"widening" part for industrial regions that are currently underrepresented in
I4MS and SAE

o DT-ICT-03-2020: I4MS (phase 4) - uptake of digital game changers and

digital manufacturing platforms, where another “widening” activity is
foreseen

o DT-ICT-04-2020: Photonics Innovation Hubs

o DT-ICT-05-2020: Big Data Innovation Hubs

Focus area "Digitising and transforming European industry and services"

 Consortia should be deeply rooted in regional/national DIH

 Critical mass of highly innovative, cross border experiments. At least 50% of
the budget should directly benefit SMEs or slightly bigger companies.
Financial support to third parties may be used.
 Activities should aim at long-term sustainability and include a business plan
for the DIHs, a plan to attract investors, to address training and skills
development needs and dissemination. Established networks reaching out to
SMEs like the Enterprise Europe Network and the NCP network should be
used.
 Selected projects are expected to collaborate on building a network of Digital
Innovation Hubs, covering most regions in Europe.

Everywhere Initiative

Stimulate the development of the next wave of products by including innovative

electronic components, software and systems. Especially in sectors where digital
technologies are underexploited.
● Area 1: Cyber-physical and embedded systems: to help businesses from any
sector uplift the quality and performance of their products and services by
including (semi)-autonomy, paying special attention to security and privacy
and to the collaboration between humans and machines.
● Area 2: Customised low energy computing powering CPS and the IoT: to help
businesses who are developing products for situations where high computing
capacity and low energy would be a competitive advantage

● Area 3: Flexible and Wearable Electronics: to help businesses in further

maturing, innovating and validating their products with thin, organic and large
area electronics technologies, including wearable, portable and embedded
objects. Focus is on i) access to design, technology and prototyping which are
ready to use, and ii) application experiments driven by concrete user
requirements and business cases.
● Area 4: Widening Digital Innovation Hubs: it addresses all three technology
areas of SAE and I4MS. It calls for Digital Innovation Hubs in industrial regions
which are so far underrepresented in Smart Anything Everywhere and I4MS.
These hubs should strongly collaborate with other Innovation Actions funded
under SAE and I4MS, e.g. through joint highly innovative cross-border
experiments.
Success Story
Problem:
Integrate existing but legacy machine tools into
digital production chains

Solution:
Development and verification of necessary toolset to
support integration. “Shell” augments legacy
machine tools through a set of interfaces to embed
into an advanced Cloud Manufacturing environment.

Outcome:
• Adapt large investments in machine tools for
future digitized usage
• Additional revenue of 0.5 M€ for SME expected Partners:
until 2023 • FormTec GmbH (SME, DE)
• University of Patras (RTO, EL)
• Cranfield University (RTO, UK)

Success Story
Problem:
Continuous glass cutting problem in the
production process

Solution:
Optimization of design
Transfer AI-based technology

Outcome:
• Considerably improved process
• Considerably improved energy efficiency
• Reduction of material losses
• Significantly increased competitiveness
• Cost saving: ca. €150,000 per year Partners:
• AGC Flat Glass Ibérica (SME)
• University Polytechnics of
Valencia

Success Story
Problem:
Clutch-brakes transfer motion from a motor flywheel
Wear checks create significant downtime cost

Solution:
Smart sensor system allows predictive maintenance:

Break pad monitored by distance transducer and temperature sensor,

low energy electronics for data processing and wireless transmission
empowered by kinetic energy harvester

Outcome:
• 2.000 units per year planned
• Added functionality expected Partners:
• to increase revenues by 1 M€ over the next 5 years • Goizper (SME, ES)
• IK4-IKERLAN (RTO, ES)
• Hahn-Schickard (RTO, DE)
