INTRODUCTION

Detail surveys are a basic prerequisite for building and land development. In
most cases, the purpose of detail surveys is to indicate features on, and adjacent to, a
property. There are a number of site features and levels required by architects and
planners. The surveys is used to determine the three-dimensional coordinates x, y and z
(easting, northing and elevation) of a series of points of detail. These coordinates are
plotted and a contoured plan is compiled from the results. The field methods used is
radial positioning using Theodolite.

OBJECTIVE

1. To perform the detailed survey on a selected area.

2. To produce large scale digital map from objects.

EQUIPMENT

1. Total Station - 1
2. Tripod - 2
3. Prism - 1
4. Mini Prism - 2
5. Prism Pole - 2
6. Nail - 1
7. Compass - 1
8. Measuring Tape - 1

METHODOLOGY

1. The details of features at the assigned area was sketched.

2. The occupied point and backsight point were identified.
3. The azimuth at the backsight’s point was recorded into the total station at the
occupied point using a prismatic compass. If the coordinates of the backsight
points were known, they are input into the total station.
4. Features to be surveyed was identified and the ‘code’ and ‘point’ number of each
of the features were defined.
5. The process measurements of the detail were recorded.
6. Once fieldwork was done, the data measurement was downloaded into a
computer.
7. The data was processed using the AutoCAD Land Development to produce
‘Digital Map’ at the assigned study area.

DISCUSSION

Throughout this field work, we are required to obtain the bearing of a new
location and the distance between the total station and the new location. We are able to
conduct this survey by using the total station and several formulas that we learnt during
the setting out class. We setup the total station and the prism and rotate the total station
towards the prism to get the initial or control bearing. Then, we place the reflector on the
location that we want to know and rotate the total station towards the reflector to get the
location’s bearing and the distance between the total station and the reflector. This step
is repeated on other new locations that we want to know. Through the data obtained, we
can calculate the coordinates for each new location.

There were several problems we faced, that are :

1. Pole visibility decreased due to simultaneous surveys by other groups in our
study area.
2. Points taken too far away from the outline of the object due to obstacles in
between. For example, the outline of the pond could not be completed because
of trees and columns blocking the total station’s visibility.
3. Battery of the total station was weak causing us to temporarily stop our survey.

To overcome the problems we :

1. Decrease number of surveys occuring at once to maximise visibility of each
prism.
2. Make sure the total station is placed strategically enough to be able to record all
points of each object.
3. Prepare sufficient batteries for the survey beforehand.
CONCLUSION

In conclusion, we managed to carry out detail survey successfully. The place that
we chose to do the survey was between block 14 and 15 in UTP. Detail survey is done
by using prism reflector and total station. The survey is to produce a large scale digital
map from objects by operating the AutoCAD Land software. Throughout this survey, we
learnt how to fully operate the survey equipment and the way to process our data
recorded to execute more detailed digital map of the area. Thus, the objective for this
survey is attained.

As future civil engineers, we have to have the knowledge on how to do surveying

process as it is the backbone of civil engineering. Along the survey measurements are
the mathematical calculations. Distances, angles, directions, locations, elevations,
areas are determined from the data of the survey. Land surveying is basically an art and
science of mapping and measuring land. The entire scope of profession is wide; it
actually boils down to calculate where the land boundaries are situated. This is very
important as without this service, there would not have been railroads, skyscrapers
could not have been erected and neither any individual could have put fences around
their yards for not invading others land.
