WRITING MIDTERM #2

Task: Design a new household product

You work in the design department of a large manufacturing company that makes a wide variety of household
products.
With your team:
1. Decide on a product for your design project.
Wireless charger for long distance, this product can provide electricity wirelessly to electronic devices located
in a room, such as cell phones, laptops, etc.

2. Determine the following three characteristics of your product:

 How quickly it has to be brought to market.
This product has to be launched as soon as possible. because in our homes there are many devices, and also
many cables

 Whether it is to be a high-quality or a low-quality product.

Wireless charger has to be of high quality, because if it is of low quality it could damage the devices and the
health of people

 Whether it is to be a high-cost or a low-cost product.

This product will be a high-cost, due to the high technology required to transmit a large amount of electricity
wirelessly and over long distances.

3. Decide on the relative importance of various design criteria (convenience, durability, efficiency, beauty,
safety, etc.) for your product.
Wireless charger will be convenient for all the public that wants to use or charge their devices without the
need for wiring.
The durability will be 2-3 years, because electronic devices need more and more electricity, then the
accelerated obsolescence strategy will be used.
The efficiency depends on the separation between the devices and the wireless charger, and therefore it will
be designed to have a minimum efficiency of 40% in a room. efficiency also depends on the number of devices
charging at the same time, so chargers with different device capacity will be designed
about the shell design, it will look like a table decoration, so there will be several predefined designs (emphasis
on impersonality) and it can also be customized.
Finally, safety is very important since the product will work with considerable amount of energy. To avoid
accidents, the design will be carried out following safety standards and in the management of electricity
4. Decide which, if any, value engineering principles can be applied to your design in order to optimize
costs.
For the development of this wireless charger, the first two value engineering principles apply
First principle (Functions): Analyzing the functions of the product, we conclude that its main function is to
provide electricity wirelessly.
What must this product not do? This should not energize unwanted users. To correct this, a device registration
function will be integrated into the charger
What else could it do? this charger could also have wired connection ports for users with unregistered devices.
Second principle (Alternatives): To generate wireless electricity we need high power or high frequency. The
most cost-effective alternative is to create a charger with electronic components that allow switching at high
frequencies, without exceeding the limit that can affect the health of people.

5. Decide what sort of performance testing will be carried out on your product before it is released.
1. Efficiency: To measure the ratio between the energy generated by the charger and that received by the
devices.
2. Stress: To observe how the charger behaves with more load than expected.
3. Endurance: It is done to ensure that the charger can handle the expected load during the charging time
period
4. Distance: Measure the amount of electricity delivered for various distances.
5. Usability: Ease of installation and registration of devices, for new users.
6. Resistance: Mechanical resistance to falls or bumps
