Task 3.

In pairs, read the information sheet "Global Gender Inequality" and identify which factors are
a cause of gender inequality and which are a consequence of gender inequality. Complete the
table.

Causes Consequences

Favoritism In many countries giving birth to a child means that

that family must have another baby, until a boy
would be born. Having a girl in most of those cases
it’s similar to a natural disaster.

Unjust laws Women are subject to violence in many countries,

Women are subject to violence in many countries,
especially in Middle Asia.

Independence is just a dream for a woman in those

countries.

Discrimination against women Girls tend to drop out school and receive less
education

Restricted or no access at all to contraceptive Unplanned births and infant deaths, unproper
measures meanings to raise a child.

Misogynism Women earn less money than men across the globe.
Women have less chances to obtain a position in the
eadership of an important
company/organization/political party.

Which facts surprised you and why?

I’m surprised about the unjust laws regarding women in countries which were controlled at some given
time by developed empires like Great Britain or France. Those empires seemed they didn’t care so much
in changing the unjust laws regarding women, which is a pity for all those women out there.

Favoritism, because I’m shocked that families still prefer boys rather than women in most of the
countries across the world. This kind of thinking places women way below a man.
Even though we do not exactly know in which positions the women mentioned above were serving in
the Navy (soldiers or cooks, cleaners and maids), do you think the percentage of women in
traditionally masculine professions will grow, or remain fairly small in your culture in the future?

In my opinion, our culture suffers a lot when it comes to gender discrimination. Despite the fact that women
can be in many occasions even stronger and faster than men, people consider a woman weak, emotionally
unstable and unable to cope in crisis situations, but most of them don’t even think that men actually acting
almost the same in those situations. In military organization this gender discrimination is situated even at a
higher level, because men think women can’t fight. If we’d make a comparison between percentages of
women who can fight along the men and the men who are a lot weaker than a woman I think we would see
that most of the women which are active in the army are having a higher level of training and knowledge than
a lot of men who are considering themselves superiors by nature.
• Do you think it is a good idea for women to drive tractors or fly fighter-bombers?

This idea that women can handle any kind of jobs including drive tractors or fly fighter-bombers would help
women to grow in the eyes of men and the underestimation would start to decrease. But only with a lot of
education starting from early ages women will be equal to men. In my opinion, women can do any kind of job
as best as a man could do if they are trained like men.

Case study 1.
Juan and Patricia have been in a relationship for just under one year. Juan always decides where they go,
what they do, and pays for everything. Patricia has suggested, that as both of them only have part time jobs, and
are low on money, that they should pay an equal share when out together. Juan, however, believes this is
inappropriate, and tells Patricia that it is a "man's job" to make decisions and have financial control. Is he right to
think this?/What should Patriciasay to Juan?

Juan overestimates his role in the relationship and he discriminates Particia’s role in the relationship.
Because of this discrimination, Patricia is feeling unimportant and useless. Patricia should say to Juan that a
relationship is based on equality and forming a team in good times and bad times should be their goal. Having the
same goals and feeling important to the relationship would strengthen their relationship.

Case study2.
Ramila is thirteen years old, and lives in a small, rural town in Eastern Nepal. She has been told by her
father that she is to be married in three months' time to an eighteen year old man, whom she has never met, or
even seen a picture of. Ramila protests, but her father tells her it is of no use, and that she must marry, and
ownership of her will pass from her father, to her new husband. Is it right for Ramila to be forced to marry? Why is it
inappropriate for girls to be traded and treated like products?
It's not right for Ramila to be forced to marry, because having no choice of her own would make her feel like
an object. Girls are human beings and have feelings and emotions just like men, Destroying them by such actions
would only kill their soul and even if they would live until old age, their mind and their soul would die along the way.
Case study3.
Kelly has worked as a math teacher for over ten years. The position of head of year has recently become
available, and Kelly is very keen to apply. However, a friend has informed her that, as there is only one position
available, it will probably go to a male member of staff, as 'men are more suited to leadership roles'. Is this
statement unfair? Do you think that both men and women should be treated equally and be able to reach senior
positions regardless of their gender?

I think that men and women should be treated equally when it comes to reaching seniors positions, because
leading it’s something that you learn during time and involves process which both men and women can handle the
same. The men perception is flawed because the society is controlled by men and why would they want to lose
their positions to a women?! Their sense of superiority would be affected if a women would command them,
because they think women are weak, by nature.

Case study4.
Sandra has been offered a special grant to apprentice with a master plumber after graduation. She is
excited and rushes to tell James. They have been planning to get married in the fall and this way, she will be able to
start earning some good money. James is very quiet after Sandra tells him, then finally says "I don't think I could
marry a plumber, Sandra. You're going to make a choice." What should she do?

“Sandra’s enthusiasm is being neglected completely by James. He doesn’t care at what she wants. He
thinks that marrying with a plumber it’s a bad thing which would be judged by society in a harshly manner. Sandra
should leave him and find someone who accepts her and her wishes, dreams and whatever she wants to do in her
life.

Case study5.
Dean is about to ask Catherine out for the first time when she walks over to him and says, "Dean, there is a
new club in town and I really want to go there. I was hoping you would go with me. Are you busy Saturday night?"
Dean has no plans and he was hoping to take Catherine to the club, but he wants to do the asking. He's thinking
he'll say he's busy. What should he do?

In this case, Dead’s superiority it’s being affected by the woman’s direct approach. He is afraid of the idea
that she might be a person who like to control things. He feels inferior to her direct approach.
