1. A reactor will operate at 300 psi and 600oF. Height = 12 ft; crown radius = 66 in; diameter = 6 ft; double welded butt
joint, efficiency = 80%. Allowable tensile strength of material is 12 000 psi. Determine the thickness of the shell and
head.

2. A cylindrical water tank with a hemispherical dome has the dimensions given below:

10 ft

20 ft

20 ft

The tank is full. The total force, in lbf, exerted by the water on the base of the tank is ____________.

3. The strength of the longitudinal joint is 85 ksi whereas for the girth is 43 ksi. Calculate the maximum diameter of the
cylinder tank if the internal pressure is 300 psi. The thickness of the tank is equal to 3/2 in.

4. A cylindrical water tank has a diameter of 20 ft. It is made of steel plates that are ¾ in thick. The tank has a
circumferential stress limited to 6100 psi. Find the maximum height (in ft) of the tank.

5. A cylindrical pressure vessel is fabricated from steel plating that has a thickness of 20 mm. The diameter of the
pressure vessel is 450 mm and its length is 2.0 m. Determine the maximum internal pressure that can be applied if the
longitudinal stress is limited to 140 MPa and the circumferential stress is limited to 60 MPa.

NOTE: The concept behind the next problem is not discussed. However, one common problem regarding pressure
vessel is its working capacity. Please take time to answer problem number six.

6. A horizontal cylindrical tank is used for the storage of motor gasoline in the bulk plant of an oil company in Pandacan.
The tank has an inside diameter of 3 m and an inside length of 10 m. The suction line of the tank is located 30 cm from
the tank bottom to avoid sucking out sludge. To prevent overfilling, the maximum height of liquid in the tank is not
made to exceed 90% of the vertical height of the tank. Find the working capacity of the tank in kiloliters.
