VOLVO QUICK COUPLER

HYDRAULIC KIT INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
GEITH INTERNATIONAL
CLAW QUICK HITCH VOLVO
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE FOR
VOLVO EXCAVATORS

The Volvo range of excavators, are supplied hydraulically piped for the Volvo original ‘S’ type quick
hitch systems. Volvo dealers and customers recommend that Geith fitters use as much of the original
Volvo system as possible.

Note: The installation and test procedure detailed below is for the Volvo control system and so
should be followed in conjunction with the Geith Operator Instructions supplied with the coupler.

• Each Geith coupler will come with one set of blank attachment pins, a hydraulic kit and possibly
a set of loose calipers.
• To determine if coupler calipers are required please read through
caliper memo on page 6
• As detailed in the Geith Operator Instructions (00065004C) the first
step in the installation is to physically attach the quick coupler to the
machine dipper.
• Remove the two original machine pins and temporary travel links.
• Align the coupler with the end of the dipper arm.
• Lightly grease the O-ring seals and place over the edge of the coupler.
• Slowly lower the dipper arm into place, ensuring not to pinch or
damage the O-rings.
• Align the pin bores of the dipper arm and coupler.
• Insert the Volvo original dipper pin through the coupler and dipper
arm, and secure using original machine bolts.

NOTE: Use original Volvo hardened pins to attach coupler, use the blank pins, supplied with
the coupler, for the bucket or attachment

• With dipper pin secured, repeat procedure for the Link pin, again
ensuring not to pinch the O-rings, insert the original Volvo Link pin.

• With the quick hitch secured, and the bolts fully tightened, find a clean
dry place to spread out the contents of the hydraulic kit.

• The coupler hydraulic valve will be supplied with all its main adaptors
installed and fully tightened, 90˚ elbows (1729 & 3078) can be added
to help route the hoses to their individual ports where necessary.

• Locate and install part number Z-1216 in both coupler cylinder ports,
or alternatively use part numbers Z-1158 & Z-1729 to achieve the
same result. Note only hand tighten these fittings.

• Without removing the hoses, unbolt the Volvo original manifold block
located at the end of the dipper arm, and tie back so it does not get
damaged.

• Attach the wire guarded hoses to the previously installed fittings on the cylinder port block.
• Feed the jumper hoses through the abrasion sleeve supplied.
• Locate the swivel assembly from the kit and attach each jumper hose to
the corresponding side of the assembly.
• With the coupler in the fully curled position, position the swivel
assembly as far up the stick as the hoses will allow and mark its
position.
• Remove the backing plate from the swivel block B01, due to
movement in the cylinder this plate must be positioned at least 3”
below the mark.
• If the backing plate location is interfered with by the Volvo manifold
mounting bracket, or perhaps for esthetic purposes, either use an
acetylene torch to carefully remove this block.
• Using a small hand held grinder, clean off the dross and surrounding paint.

• If it is preferred not to weld directly to the machine, the mounting plate

we supply can be welded to the underside of the swivel manifold block
allowing you to bolt the assembly to the machine.

NOTE: Disconnect machine battery or isolate circuit before any welding to the machine can
commence and always earth close to the point of weld.

• Ensuring that the backing plate is perfectly square with the sides of the arm use an arc welder and
an E7018 electrode or equivalent to fully weld the swivel backing
plate (B01) in position.
• Using a chipping hammer and a wire brush, clean the welded area.
• Use original Volvo grey paint; fully treat cleaned area, to prevent
rusting.
• Re-assemble the swivel assembly to its mounting plate and using a
13mm wrench fully tighten the three locking bolts.

NOTE: Before removing any hydraulic component, let the machine

stick rest on the ground and release any system pressure from the tank.

• With the system relieved of pressure, remove the two Volvo supply lines from the original
manifold and connect them directly to the two center ports on the swivel assembly.
• If the original Volvo hoses are too long due to the swivels position, loosen the hose clamps
further up the arm and route the hoses so they are not under any stress and lie flat against the arm.
• Next locate and remove the original Volvo quick coupler solenoid valve, it will be located either
on the floor of the engine compartment or in the machine body behind the machine cab.

NOTE: The original Volvo Solenoid Valve has five ports exactly like the Geith version, but has
a very different operation (Fig.1).

• Before removing any of the original pipe work from the Volvo original valve label each of the
pipes using the lettering engraved on the Volvo Solenoid Valve block.

Fig.1
• The first pipe, which must be removed, is the “PS” line.

Note: This pressure line must never be used to operate Geith Quick coupler.

• This pressure line must be then plugged using the male plug provided (Z-3387), as it is not
required for the Geith system. This hose must be tied neatly out of the way so as not to cause
obstruction.
• Disconnect all identified piping and solenoid cap, and remove the Volvo Solenoid Valve.
• The Geith valve backing plate has been drilled and tapped to mount directly onto the Volvo valve
bracket.
• Note: The valve body is not tapped and the bolts may contact before
assembly is fully tight, if this occurs use the M8 washers supplied.
• If however space is restricted locate the 7”x 3” drilled plate and form
a bracket which when welded to the valve backing plate should
simply bolt in place of the Volvo valve bracket.
• Connect the 1/4” Volvo hose marked “A” to the “B” port of the Geith
solenoid valve and the 3/8” Volvo hose marked “B” to the “A” port, use 90˚ elbows (1729 &
3078) where required.
• The Volvo high-pressure pipe marked “P3” can be connected directly to port “P” on the Geith
valve block, again using 90˚ elbow if necessary.
• The Volvo return line marked “T” can be connected directly to port “T” on the Geith valve block,
again using 90˚ elbow if necessary.
• In the event that the Pump, Tank or A line is too short we have supplied a 30” extension hose
complete with adaptor.
• The final port “X” on the Valve block is for the signal from the bucket
crowd cylinder. This connection will have to be made right at the base of
the boom where the supply piping changes from solid steel piping to
flexible rubber hosing.
• To determine exactly which connection to break into, follow the pipe
coming from the rear, piston side of the bucket curl cylinder all the way
back to the base of the boom, right to the coupling.
• With a collecting dish at the ready to catch any oil spillage, use the
correct wrench to uncouple the connection.
• Insert the t-piece assembly (2061), ensuring that the o-ring, seals against
the couplings flat face and that the connection adaptor faces toward the
machine cab and tighten connection fully.
• With the assembly fully tightened, connect the 90 degree end of the
3100mm hose to the adaptor.
• Route the opposite end of the hose neatly around the slue motor and back into the engine
compartment.
• Attach the opposite end of the hose to the ‘X’ port of the valve, again using the 90˚ elbow (1729)
if required.

• Using the tie wraps provided (Z-1152) neatly secure the fitted hose to the existing machine hose.
• At this stage fully tighten all hydraulic connections made.
• The final connection to be made is to attach the Volvo solenoid cap straight on to the Geith
Solenoid Valve.

NOTE: If Geith control box is required, refer to page 7 of these instructions for wiring
diagram.

• With the full circuit complete, a test procedure must then be run, the procedure of which is
detailed below:
1. Start the machine, to energize the control panel and hydraulic circuit.
2. At this point the hitch should be in a fully closed position.
3. To unlock the coupler, firstly, crowd the bucket cylinder in fully.
4. Press the two switches “A” (Fig.3), located either side of the driver (Fig.4), to position “1”
simultaneously to unlock the quick coupler.

Fig.3 Fig.5

Fig.4

5. If they are pressed together red warning lights “C” and “D” illuminate on the control panel
(Fig.5), a warning buzzer sounds and the coupler will open.
6. Satisfied that the coupler opens correctly, press the two switches “A” to position “0”
simultaneously.
7. The coupler should close fully, but the warning light and the buzzer will continue to be
activated.
8. Ensuring that the safety clasp has fully closed, switch the return switch “B” (Fig.3) to
position “0”, this acknowledges that the safety is fully on and turns off both the buzzer and
warning lights.
9. Note: If for some reason you require the warning buzzer to be turned off, this can be done
by switching the return switch “B” (Fig.3) to position “1”, the red warning lights “C” and
“D” (Fig.5) will still be illuminated, but the buzzer will stop.
10. Finally complete the full Geith test procedure detailed in the Operators Instructions
(00065004C).

GEITH QUICK COUPLER
CALIPER INSTALLATION
The Geith CLAW is the most versatile piggy back style quick coupler on the
market today. It has been designed to pick up a wide variety of manufacturer’s
attachments, despite the large variation in pin centers and machine stick width. The only
limiting factor being that the attachments must have similar pin diameters. To achieve
this, the coupler base width had to be designed narrow enough to fit between the tightest
ear spacing for that range of attachments. Due to the relatively large variation in stick
widths between all manufactures, there is sometimes a big difference between the width
of the coupler base and the width between the ears of the attachment. If it is known that
the coupler will only be required to pick up a certain manufacturers attachment or one
with a wider stick width, then the coupler can be ordered with attached calipers/spacers.
These calipers simply make up the differences in width, centralizing the coupler on the
attachment during operation. This helps minimize the working stresses on the coupler by
increasing the amount of surface contact between the coupler and attachment pins. Geith
highly recommend, if it is possible, attaching these calipers to all our couplers, especially
couplers picking up attachments with diameter 90mm pins and above. If however you
have received your Geith coupler with loose calipers and it is known that the coupler will
only ever be required to pick up the machines own attachments or attachments with a
larger stick width, then Geith highly recommend fitting these calipers to the coupler. The
‘C’ shaped caliper matches with the front pick up hook as shown below, the rear caliper
should be mounted flush with the bottom of the coupler and mounted at a distance which
matches the pin centers on the attachments. Both front and rear should be fully welded
using a single fillet weld and E7018 electrode or approved equivalent.
