Course Objectives: The objectives of the course are to develop the students’ ability to understand the thermodynamics of each component of a turbine engine,
fans, compressors, burners, turbines, afterburners and nozzles. This course will help to know the design variables for each component and to understand the
linked system performance of all components in the engine.

Pre-requisites: Heat and Mass Transfer, Engineering Thermodynamics

Course Contents/Syllabus:

Module I: Introduction Cycles 10
Descriptors/Topics
Introduction to Brayton cycle, regeneration and reheating cycle analysis, compressive fluid flow.
Module II: Review Compressible Flow 10
Descriptors/Topics
Conservation equations, concept of waves in fluid, mach waves, compression waves, expansion waves, isentropic flow,
shock waves, stationary and moving shocks.
Module III: Aircraft Engine 20
Descriptors/Topics
Jet Propulsion –introduction, early aircraft engines, types of aircraft engines, reciprocating internal combustion engines,
gas turbine engines, turbo jet engine, turbo fan engine, turboprop engine, aircraft propulsion theory- thrust, thrust power,
propulsive and overall efficiencies.
Module IV: Fans and Compressors 20
Descriptors/Topics
Axial flow fans and compressors, elementary theory, degree of reaction, three-dimensional flow, simple design methods,
20 blade design, calculation of stage performance, overall performance, compressibility effects and performance
characteristics.
Module V: Combustion in Gas Turbine Engine 20
Descriptors/Topics
Combustion system, form of combustion, important factors affecting combustion chamber design, combustion processes,
combustion chamber performance, practical problem, simple gas turbines-components, characteristic, pressure losses,
methods of improving part load performance, behavior of gas turbines, gas turbine rotors
Module VI: Turbine Blade 20
Descriptors/Topics
Axial flow turbines, elementary theory, vortex theory, choice of blade profile, pitch and chord estimation of stage 20
performance, helium cooled turbine.

Student Learning Outcomes:


On completion of the course student will be able to:

 Describe the basic theory of heat exchangers


 Design heat exchanger for a specific application
 Choose standard design data for heat exchanger design
 Evaluate stresses, vibration and acoustic aspects.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:


The course pedagogy will include lectures, numerical practice, case studies, seminars and presentations. It also includes discussion on real problems related to
design of mechanical components.
