Current Activities towards UHC in Bangladesh

Currently a lot of UHC related activities are taking places in Bangladesh. In the public sector of
Bangladesh ESP (Essential Health Service) has been introduced as the basis for UHC. Though it is
under implementation process, it has plans to reach the lowest unit of health service delivery
facilities. HEU (Health Economics Unit) introduces Shasthyo Suroksha Karmasuchi (SSK), health-
financing scheme in three upazilas (Madhupur, Kalihati and Ghatail) of Tangail district. People in
below-poverty are included in this scheme.
At the district specially the implementation level Information Communication Technologies (ICT)
are used widely to enhance population coverage.Now a lot of preventive measures are carried
out such as Expanded Programme on Immunization(EPI) and Social and Behavioral Change
Communication(SBCC).In terms of curative programmes activities like Integrated Management
of Childhood Illness(IMCI),maternal and neonatal health activities,Emergency Obsteric
care(EOC),Demand-side financing programmes(DSF) with vouchers and indoor and outdoor
services.The govt. is providing free medicines from health centers which lessens the financial
burden of the patients to some extent.
NGO’s are also playing an important role in UHC.NGO’s are mainly engaged in enhancing service
coverage and that with service quality.These NGO’s are working on health system
strengthening,nutrition,newborn health snd maternal health at PHC(Primary Health Care).They
are focusing on SBCC activities and community engagement.They are advocating with the govt.
for modifying policies and contributing to the UHC journey.
The media is also involved in awareness building about UHC specially among the common
mass.Media has been involved from the beginning of the UHC agenda in Bangladesh.The
Rocketfeller foundation,Press Institute of Bangladesh(PIB) are working on UHC.Trained
journalists are writing extensively on different aspects of UHC.PIB is regularly organizing TV talk
shows on different aspects of the UHC agenda and orientation and training sessions for
journalists.Multinational organization such as WHO is creating a common understanding on UHC
among stakeholders.They are contributing to UHC activities by strengthening the health system
and generating information.
