Finalmente, el primer numero de Grafikal esta aquí.
Definitivamente es un sueño hecho realidad para
mi. Este proyecto empezó hace varios años como
una alocada idea. Ha evolucionado desde entonces
tomando diferentes formas y nombres para finalmente
materializarse en Grafikal.
FREE Aun en una etapa de recién nacido, Grafikal todavía
tiene mucho por crecer y desarrollarse pero creo

numero tengo unas entrevistas muy interesantes así

Finally, the first issue of Grafikal is here.
It is definitely a dream come true for me. This project
began as a crazy idea several years ago. It evolved
since then, taking different shapes and names to
finally materialize into Grafikal.
Still in a new born state, Grafikal has to fully grow and
develop but I think it started out on the right track.
In this first issue I have some great interviews and
great artwork that I hope everyone enjoys reading
and viewing.

Me llamo Burton Rast y estoy viviendo, amando
y siempre representando a Chicago, Estados Unidos.
Soy Director de Arte Senior en el equipo interactivo
de Euro RSSCG Chicago y cuando no estoy plantado
frente a un par de pantallas lcd generalmente me
pueden encontrar paseando en bicicleta por la
ciudad, disfrutando de una comida al aire libre y una
Newcastle Brown ale o viendo un concierto de rock
con mis seres queridos y cercanos.
INICIOS
Mi hermano y yo junto con un amigo empezamos
a experimentar con Photoshop a través de la
producción de identificaciones falsas cuando éramos

PROFILE
My name is Burton Rast, and I am living, loving &
ever-representing Chicago, USA. I am the Senior Art
Director on the interactive team at Euro RSCG Chicago
and when I’m not planted squarely in front of a pair
of lcd screens I can usually be found either biking
around the city, enjoying some street side dining &
Newcastle Brown Ale or checking out a rock show
with those near & dear to me.
BEGINNINGS
My brother and I along with a friend of ours began
experimenting with Photoshop via the production of
fake IDs when we were too young to legally enjoy
the pubs. This practice quickly lent itself to the

bares. Esta practica rápidamente se presto a los
principios de una carrera en diseño gráfico, aunque
debo admitir, era solo una manera de ganar un poco
de dinero. No fue hasta que un par de mis amigos me
introdujeron a lo básico de la animación en Flash que
quede completamente enamorado con el diseño para
la web y empecé a experimentar con ActionScript y
la interactividad. Desde ese entonces no he podido
imaginar ganarme la vida de otra manera.
PRIMER TRABAJO
Mi primer proyecto pagado fue un proyecto en HTML
puro para el padre de mi compañero de cuarto
que mi hermano y yo hicimos en su apartamento
acompañados de una botella de Jameson. Ni él ni

beginnings of a career in graphic design though,
admittedly, this was really only a means of paying the
bills at the time. It wasn’t until a couple friends of
mine introduced me to the basics of Flash animation
that I became entirely enamored with designing for
the web and began experimenting with actionScript
and interactivity. Ever since that time I have not been
able to imagine doing anything else for a living.
FIRST GIG
My first paid project was a straight-HTML job for
my roommate’s father that my brother and I produced
in his apartment over a bottle of Jameson. Neither
he nor I knew the first thing about web design &
development but figured the Dreamweaver interface
to be intuitive enough that we could stumble our way

yo sabíamos algo acerca de diseño o desarrollo web
pero pensamos que la interfase de Dreamweaver era
lo bastante intuitiva que podría guiarnos a través del
proyecto. Aun sigue en línea, créanlo o no, pero no lo
encontraran mencionado en mi portafolio.
Mi primer trabajo en esta industria fue como Web Media
Specialist en Focus:IMPACT Corp. en Chicago. Era
una compañía de e-learning que apenas empezaba,
de la generación dot-com, y sigo extremadamente
agradecido hasta este día con la gente de ahí que vio
una razón para darme la oportunidad de ganarme la

through the job. It is, believe it or not, still online
(though you won’t find it listed in my portfolio!).
My first real industry job was a “Web Media Specialist”
position at Focus:IMPACT Corp. in Chicago. The
company was an e-learning startup, certainly part of
the dot-com generation, and I remain immeasurably
appreciative to this day that the guys there saw reason
to give me the opportunity to play with computers for
a living ... and I still can’t believe I make a living doing
this sort of thing.

MODUS OPERANDI
Antes solía empezar a dibujar ideas en Photoshop
inmediatamente, ahora casi siempre lo hago con
papel y lápiz y, dependiendo de cuanta gente esta
involucrada en la elaboración, con una discusión
generalizada con el equipo de cómo nos conviene
formular una estrategia para el proyecto. Básicamente,
ahora siento como que siempre debe haber bastante

MODUS OPERANDI
While I used to begin by immediately sketching
out ideas in Photoshop, I begin now almost exclusively
with pencil & paper and, depending upon how many
people are involved in the build, a general-yet-
thorough discussion with the team as to how we
collectively see fit to derive a strategy for the project.
Basically, these days I feel as though there should
always be a lot of discussion, consideration and
preproduction before any graphics are produced and
eventually set in motion.

No tendría trabajo si no fuera por la existencia de

INSPIRACIÓN
Graffiti y arte de stencil, la arquitectura, la
naturaleza, la tecnología, el diseño sustentable y la
música.
El viajar. Creo que la manera mas efectiva de sacar
inspiración de tu ambiente es salirte tan lejos de
tu zona de confort como puedas. También es muy
fácil acostumbrarse naturalmente a las vistas y los
sonidos que son parte de nuestra vida diaria lo que
para mi hace mas difícil encontrar inspiración en
todos los estímulos visuales y auditivos que doy por
hechos. Cuando soy parte de un ambiente nuevo (y
a veces incomodo) descubro que mis ojos y oídos
están abiertos en una manera muy diferente a la que
estoy acostumbrado.
En cada profesión es bueno saber un poco de todo
lo que esta relacionado con ese campo. ¿Crees
que esto aplica mas a los diseñadores?
En tu opinión, ¿los diseñadores tendrán que
especializarse en áreas mas especificas de
diseño?
Creo que entre mas conocimiento general
tengan los diseñadores acerca de su área,
estarán mas capacitados para utilizar tecnologías
contemporáneas para producir trabajo nuevo e
interesante, especialmente en medios interactivos.
Con eso dicho, yo paso mucho de mi tiempo formativo
en la industria tratando de asimilar cada destreza

TOOLS
I would not have a job were it not for the existence
of Photoshop & Flash.
INSPIRATION
Graffiti & Stencil art, architecture, nature,
technology, sustainable design & music.
Travel. I find the most effective way to derive
inspiration from your surroundings is to step as far
outside of your everyday comfort zone as you are able.
It is so very easy to become naturally accustomed to
the sights and sounds that are a part of our daily lives
that, for me, it becomes increasingly difficult to find
inspiration in all of the visual and aural stimuli that I
have come to take for granted. When I’m a part of a
new and interesting [and sometimes discomforting]
environment I find that my eyes and ears are open in
a very different way to that which I am used to.
In every profession, it’s good to know a little bit
about everything related to the field, do you think
this is specially true for designers?
In your opinion, will designers have to specialize
in more specific areas of design?
I think the more general knowledge designers
have about their field the more capable they become
at calling upon contemporary technologies to produce
new and interesting work; this is especially true in
interactive media. With that said, I spent much of
my formative time in the industry trying to assimilate
every imaginable skill: design, development, motion
graphics, editing, postproduction, 3d, etc. While this
is an important part of the process of finding your

Hay compañías que venden diseño “stock” en
el Internet, desde logotipos hasta plantillas de
paginas web, ¿Crees que este tipo de productos
lleguen a ser populares entre los clientes? ¿Crees
que el diseño stock tenga un gran impacto entre
los diseñadores?
Que estas compañías continúen creciendo es
testimonio del éxito de sus productos y del interés
de los consumidores. Entiendo que es un tema
delicado entre los diseñadores y hay muchas voces
de desacuerdo con este tipo de productos pero
tenemos que alcanzar un entendimiento colectivo de
que cualquier producto existirá mientras haya una
demanda para tal. Viendo mas allá de la industria del
diseño stock, siempre habrá clientes que necesiten
trabajo personalizado a su marca o compañía y por

There companies that sell stock design on the
web, from stock logos to web site templates, do
you think these type of products will become
popular among clients/buyers?
Do you think stock design has a big impact on
designers?
That these companies continue to thrive is a
testament to both the success of their product and
the interest of the consumer. I understand that this
is somewhat of a hot button issue among designers
and that there are a lot of dissenting voices in the
face of these quick fix solutions but we have to reach

INICIOS
Descubrí la fotografía gracias a mi afición a ver
revistas ilustradas....es decir creo que me creo una
cultura visual al ver los trabajos de otros fotógrafos
en diferentes medios...así nació mi inquietud por la
imagen...por otra parte los libros de la biblioteca fue
mi primer contacto con la técnica fotográfica al igual
el hecho de que mi hermano mayor fuera fotógrafo...
y la afición compartida con una amiga desembocó
en estudiar fotografía en la EEAAOA de Valencia
y agradezco una formación no exclusivamente
fotográfica en ella me impartían clases de escultura,
de dibujo, de historia del arte y todo ello mezclado
con las nuevas tendencias me formaron. También
gracias a mi inquietud por observar...no pasar por la
vida solamente mirando sino observando, con lo que
conlleva de reflexión personal.

I discovered photography thanks to my fondness
of illustrated magazines...i mean, i think it created me
a visual culture to see the work of other photographers
in different media...that’s how my unrest for imagery

MODUS OPERANDI
En mis trabajos tanto como en mis trabajos
personales trato de no distinguir en mi inspiración es
decir no hago parcelas trato de dar siempre lo mejor
que tengo, para conseguir un buen resultado.....todo
en esta vida esta ligado, interrelacionado, es difícil
para mi hacer distinciones y categorías, y siempre
en esa búsqueda de belleza ( de la verdad) de esa
naturalidad que que fluye en la vida y hay que saber
atraparla...mas allá de la técnica me implico mas en
el factor humano.
HERRAMIENTAS
Utilizo cámaras de 35mm analógicas y digitales
como la fuji fine pro s2 y cámaras nikon. También en
otros trabajos utilizo paso medio con marcas como
hasselblad o mamiya.
Cuando no llevo la cámara conmigo me comporto
de la misma manera como si la llevara...con esto
quiero decir que sigo fotografiando con la cámara
que todos llevamos en nuestro cuerpo, con nuestros
ojos, y nuestra sensibilidad que es nuestra mejor
herramienta. Siempre observando actitudes, lugares,
espacios, calles, ciudades, movimientos, estéticas.
ESTILO/TEMA FAVORITO
No tengo un estilo definido pero si que es verdad
que siento devoción por fotógrafos artísticos, y

subyugan a los encargos no acaban de interesarme...
me gusta la gente que innova..los que son capaces
de dar una nueva visión en nuestra vida. Por ejemplo
juerguen teller.
Ninguna categoría, es tan complaciente un retrato
como un paisaje, como un bodegón, todo esta unido,
todo en el fondo en su esencia es lo mismo.

MODUS OPERANDI
In my work, both personal and not, I try always
give my best in order to get a good result. Everything
in life is linked, interrelated. It’s hard for me to make
distinctions and categories and always in that search
for beauty (for truth), of that naturalness that flows
in life we have to know how to catch it. Beyond the
technique, I involve myself more in the human factor.
TOOLS
I use 35mm analogue and digital cameras like the
Fuji Fine Pro S2 and Nikon. In certain jobs I also use
medium format Hasselblad and Mamiya cameras.
When I’m not carrying a camera with me I behave as
if I was carrying one. I keep taking pictures with the
camera we all carry in our bodies, our eyes and our
sensibility which is the best tool we have. Always
observing behaviors, places, spaces, streets, cities,
movements, and esthetics.
FAVORITE SUBJECT/STYLE
I don’ have a defined style but it’s true if feel
devotion for artistic and creative photographers.
Those pros who subjugate themselves just to jobs
end up boring me. I like people who innovate, those
able to give a new vision to our lives such as Juerguen
Teller.
No subject, a portrait is just as fulfilling as a landscape,
as a warehouse, everything is united, everything at
the end, in its essence is the same.

INSPIRACIÓN
Me inspiró la inquietud por la belleza...creo que por
eso me gusta tanto la fotografía de moda..El retrato,
el ser humano, y la belleza entendida filosóficamente
como la búsqueda de la verdad. Porque la belleza es la
verdad.
Juerguen teller por su sencillez en el tratamiento de su
realidad,,,es una visión muy próxima a cualquier ser
humano...por ejemplo madonna no se deja retratar por
él...por que no miente con sus fotografías....es incluso
muy duro. Luego hay muchos clásicos como Richard
avedon, glamoroso, helmut newton por su intuición,
wolfgagn tillmans, robert frank, cartier bresson y uno
que he descubierto ahora que es un fotógrafo argentino
que se llama urko suaya que dispone de una muy buena
web. www.urkosuaya.com. Por su tratamiento de la
moda y la belleza.
Lo más importante en fotografía es la personalidad
de uno mismo, saber interpretarla y trasmitirla, dar
una visión Personal de las cosas.....nos influenciamos
de todo y de todos pero no la copia o el mimetismo
simplista. Y la técnica que nos ayuda a saber plasmar
esa visión.
SABIDURIA
¿Algunas últimas sabias palabras
para los lectores?
...que sigan siendo ellos mismos...que eso es
de valorar...que se mantengan fieles a sus principios
y se dejen poco manipular por el cliente...algo muy
difícil también...pero que lo hagan por que así nunca
se sentirán defraudados como personas. Que traten
de utilizar la herramienta mas preciada la cámara
de sus ojos siempre en cualquier lugar en cualquier
circunstancia, que siempre caminen con la sensibilidad
por delante y que en los errores muchas veces se
encuentran nuevas técnicas que luego serán utilizados.
No existe un error que no sea provechoso.

INSPIRATION
I got inspired by the unrest of beauty. I think
that’s why I like fashion photography so much. The
portrait, the human being, and beauty philosophically
understood as the search for truth, because beauty
is the truth.

Juerguen Teller for his simplicity in the treatment of
his reality...it’s a vision very close to that of another
human being...for example, Madonna won’t let him

photographs, he is harsh even. Then there are many
classics like Richard Avedon, glamorous, Helmut
Newton for his intuition, Wolfgang Tillmans, Robert
Frank, Cartier Bresson y one that I recently discovered,
an Argentinean photographer named Urko Suaya,
who has a nice website (www.urkosuaya.com), for
his treatment of beauty and fashion.
The most important thing in photography is our own
personality. Knowing how to interpret it and transmit
it. We should give a personal vision of things, we are
influenced by everything y everyone, but should not
give a copy or a simple mimic. Also, we should learn
the technique which helps us express that vision.
WISDOM
Any last words of wisdom for our readers?
...they should be themselves, which is something
to value, to try to be loyal to their principles and should
not let themselves be manipulated by the client, a
hard thing to do, but to do it anyway that way they will
never feel disappointed as people. To try to use the
most cherished tool, the camera of their eyes, always,
in everyplace and under any circumstance. To always
walk with sensibility in front and that in mistakes we
can find new techniques that can be used later on.

Desde niño empecé por la fascinación al dibujo,

No pienso mucho en ellos solo empiezo a hacer
alguna investigación sobre los temas y dejo salir la
inspiración...aunque a veces no sede esta.
¿Sigues un proceso o ritual?
No..pero si depende mucho el dibujo del estado de
animo.
HERRAMIENTAS
Lo que mas me gusta es hacer dibujos de pequeña
escala en gouche y acrílico, sobre papel, pero y con
las computadoras...pues solo utilizo Photoshop e
Illustrator
INSPIRACIÓN
Me inspiro mucho en la música, en películas en
cuestiones cotidianas, y la mayoría de mis dibujos
son experiencias personales
SABIDURIA
¿Algunas últimas sabias palabras
para los lectores?
No subestimen el poder de una imagen, detrás
de toda la información que se recibe diariamente, no
dejen de mirar la flor, que nace en el campo.

I don’t think much about them (my drawings).
I just start doing some research about the subjects
and y let the inspiration out...although sometimes it
won’t.
Do you follow a process or ritual?
No, but drawing depends a lot on your mood.
TOOLS
The thing I like to do most is small scale drawings
on gouche and acrylic on paper, but with computers,
well...I just use Photoshop and Illustrator.
INSPIRATION
I get a lot of inspiration from music, movies, in
everyday matters, and the majority of my drawings
are personal experiences.
WISDOM
Any last words of wisdom for our readers?
Do not underestimate the power of an image,
behind all the information we get everyday, don’t stop
looking at the flower that grows in the field.

Cuéntanos un poco acerca de tu
proyecto del documental
Lo que no se documenta se olvida.
El proyecto del documental empezó hace como seis
meses en la Ciudad de México. Las calles de México
están empezando a hacer más ruido en tema del
STREET ART, y cada vez hay más cosas que ver.
Tal vez no sea el primer documental de ARTE URBANO
como tal, porque el Graffiti también es considerado
una manifestación de arte en las calles. Pero si es uno
de los primeros que trata de captar ese movimiento
que ocupa los espacios públicos con stickers, stencils
y otros medios alternativos especeíficamente.
Para algunos arte, para otros vandalismos lo cierto es
que tiene un poco de todo. Y eso quiero mostrar en
el documental.

Tell us a bit about your
documentary project.
What gets documented is not forgotten.
The documentary project started about six months ago
in Mexico City. The streets of Mexico are beginning
to make more noise in the subject of street art, and
there are more things to see everyday.
Maybe it’s not the first documentary on street
art as such, because graffiti is also considered a
manifestation of art in the streets. But, it is one of
the first documentaries that tries to capture that
movement that takes over public spaces with stickers,
stencils and other alternative media specifically.
For some art, for others vandalism, the truth is that it
has a bit of everything and that’s what I’m trying to
show in this documentary.

¿Como se llama? What’s the project’s name?

Entre dos calles. El nombre tiene que ver con Entre dos calles (Between two streets). The name
la idea de que el STREET ART es considerado entre has to do with the idea that street art is considered
vandalismo y arte. Cada calle representa estos dos vandalism and art. Each street represents those two

¿Por qué un documental de arte Why a documentary on street

urbano?
En México existe la desinformación bien cabrón.
La libre expresión la tienen sólo los dueños de los
medios. Pero que pasa cuando un chavo de prepa
o Universidad se atreve a poner su opinión en los
espacios públicos de la ciudad.
art?
In Mexico there exists a lot of misinformation.
Freedom of expression exists only for those who own
the media but, what happens when a high school or
college kid dares to put his point of view on public
spaces in the city?

Esas reacciones que logra hacer una imagen sobre los
demás es lo que me interesó captar en el documental.
Además de que como te comentaba anteriormente no
existe o desconozco de algún trabajo que te muestre
eso acá en México.

Those reactions that an image can get amongst
people is what I was interesting in capturing in the © Aiwey
documentary, besides the fact that I mentioned
previously, there isn’t or I’m unaware of any other
project that shows that here in Mexico.
¿Como vez el movimiento de arte
urbano en México?
Cada quien puede tener su propia opinión.
Hay quien sólo dira mierda y pensará que es puro
vandalismo y que mejor se rayen las nalgas y dejen
de estar ensuciando la ciudad.
Pero por otro lado hay quien lo ve como una forma
de expresión.
En mi opinión los chavos aún lo están viendo como
un juego, y esta bien. Pero otros pocos lo estan
tomando muy en serio y están sacando cosas muy
interesantes. Como los del Colectivo a la Chingada.
Que intervinieron la publicidad de los políticos en las
elecciones. Cosas como esas deberian haber más en
México.
Creo que México tiene mucha tela de donde cortar y
no tenemos que copiar lo que estan haciendo en EU.
How do you see the street art
movement in Mexico?
Everyone can have his/her own opinion. There
are people who will say shit and will think it’s pure
vandalism and that street artisit should be scribbling
on their ass rather than be messing up the city.
On the other hand, there are those who see it as a
form of expression.
In my opinion, the kids are still seeing it as a game
and that’s alright but a few others are taking it very
seriously and are putting out some interesting work,
like the guys from Colectivo a la Chingada. They
intervened in the recent political elections’ campaign,
things like that should happen more often in Mexico.
I think there’s a lot of material to work with in Mexico
and we don’t need to copy what’s going on in the
U.S.

¿Con que problemas te has topado
al hacer este documental?
Talvez los únicos problemas son económicos,
por falta de material para grabar y una cámara. Pero
afortunadamente se han ido resolviendo. Un amigo
me presto su cámara y con esa estoy grabando.
¿Cuando saldrá el documental?
Espero que a principios del 2007.

What problems have you come
across doing this documentary?
Maybe the only problems are economic ones, for
lack of recording material and a camera, but, luckily
those problems have been resolved. A friend of mine
let me borrow his camera and I’m using that now.
