CHAPTER I

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

From the personal experiences stress is always in every places that can attack one

person by different stressor’s like from the academic performance we are pressure to do

the things because at that point we think about our capacity and abilities to do the task .

Stress is a main source of problem being faced by the students during their

academic career when they struggling to get the academic achievements for their future

life. Academic pressure is one of the factors that cause failure among the students. Stress

is the response of mental and action through hormonal signaling, the perception of danger

sets off an automatic response system, known as the fight or flight response. Commonly

stress refers to two things, the psychological perception of pressure, on the one hand,

and the body’s response to it, on the other, which involves multiple systems, from

breakdown to muscles to memory. Stress is a lot of expectation from self.

Stress is the most undermined syndrome in our society that is neglected since the

element of mental health associated with it. Internationally there is a meaningful work

and research conducted on the issue but there were no breakthrough research available

domestically. Mental health is actually the parameter for improved or enhanced

performance in every society.

Stress refers to the “sum of physical, mental, and emotional, trains or tensions on

a person.” It is defined as a condition typically characterized by symptoms of mental and

physical tension or strain, as depression or hypertension, which can result from reaction

to a situation in which a person feels threated or pressured or both. The stress which

enhance functions physical or mental, such a through strength training or challenging

work is called eustress, while persistent stress that is not resolved through coping or

adaption and, may lead to anxiety or withdrawal behavior is known as distress.

Anything which poses some kind of threat and challenge upon us is known as

stress. We use the word stress in such conditions when we feel “it’s too much”. We start

to think either we will be able to handle the workload or situation (Nordqvist 2009).

Academic performance is the educational aim that is achieved by a students,

teacher or institution achieves over a specific time. The academic performance of

students heavily depends upon the parental involvement in their academic activities to

attain the higher level of quality in academic success. The students are quite emotional

specially females. They are take stress in everything at school level.

According to Hussian et al., (2012), A lot of factor that influence in their study

like present pressure, teacher’s attitude toward their study, home strictness, future and job

tensions.

Having mentioned that, there was a need for identification of stress and the key

stressor that are affecting the academic performance. The researchers refine the research

by studying the effects on academic performances, financial, social relationships, and

time management.

Conceptual Framework

The researchers wanted to know the impact of stress on the academic

performances of the senior high school student in Sto.Domingo National Trade school,

the following are the list of information that the researchers wanted to know:

1. Academic Performance

The stress caused due to academic performance tensions is one of the most

common causes of stress in Senior High School student’s life. You join Senior High

School for learning and gaining knowledge. Practically the course work of senior high

students is very much challenging and demanding. This stage of education is the toughest

one and individual needs to work hard give his/her fullest effort here. In senior level, the

studies become very highly difficult and simultaneously the competition is also very

high. In this competitive world, an individual need to maintain good grades and CGPA

till the end of completion of the degree. Students who want to pursue post-graduation

need to fulfill all necessities required for getting admission into a good college. Similarly,

students who want to join and continue their career need to prepare for the same. In this

way, individual need to concentrate and maintain his/her academic performance for good

future and life. So, by maintaining all these situations and concentrating on each causes

academic performance stress.

2. Financial

It has become more familiar with the fact that the education has become so much

expensive. Mainly the senior high school education is touching heights in economical

side. So we conclude here that senior high school fee is expensive. Not all parents can

afford paying senior high fees. But those parents who can’t afford but are willing to admit

their child in senior high school anyhow manage to pay his/her fees. They sacrifice their

other needs in front of their child’s career and also for their wants and needs. This is also

one of the stress causes in individual’s life. Individual is familiar with this fact and this

thing may hunt individual’s mind causing stress. On other hand, there can be many other

ways of causing stress due to financial problems. If individual is not happy with his

monthly pocket money or is unable to satisfy his/her own needs or is getting embarrassed

in front of friends due to no money or continuous sacrifices due to shortage of money or

losing money in any situation can cause financial stress.

students in Sto.Domingo National Trade School on the second part contains in terms of

academic performances and level of stress.

This study will be limited at Sto. Domingo National Trade School only because

the researchers think that, that number of senior high school students would be enough

for the success of this study.

Definition of Terms

The following terms were defined and operationally for better understanding of

readers:

Academic Performance, is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution

has attained their short or long- term educational goals. Completion of educational bench

marks such as secondary school diplomas and bachelor’s degrees represent academic

achievement as used to the study.

Impact, is to fix firmly by or as if by packing or wedging, to press together, to

have a direct effect or impact on: impinge on, to strike forcefully also to cause to strike

forcefully as used to the study.

Stress, is a feeling of emotional or physical tension. It can come from any event

or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous. Stress is your body’s

reaction to a challenge or demand. In short bursts, stress can be positive, such as when it

helps you avoid anger or meet a deadline. But when stress lasts for a long time, it may

harm your health.

CHAPTER II

Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature

Academic-related stress can increase substance use among young people. In a

survey study of 128 Grade 11 students attending competitive private schools in the

United States, students who reported experiencing high ongoing stress, particularly in

relation to academic achievement and the tertiary education admissions process, also

reported high rates of drug and alcohol use (Leonard et al., 2015).

The authors report that substance use was associated with a greater desire for

academic achievement, higher perceived stress, less effective coping strategies, and less

closeness with parents (Leonard et al., 2015).

This study demonstrates the importance of protective social factors in mediating

the effects of academic-related stress. In a cross-sectional study of tertiary nursing

students from the United States, those with higher self-reported stress had higher

incidence of substance use. Students who had higher perceptions of faculty support used

fewer stimulants to assist them while studying, further demonstrating the proactive role

of social factors (Boulton & O’Connell, 2017).

We can resolute the student’s academic achievements by their performances in

their institutions, their activities and assignments done in classes, presentations they give

and results of their exams (Ong, Bessie, and Cheong, 2009).

It is also found, that confidence level of students in themselves in terms of

academics and their managerial abilities as how they manage their academic work load
11

STO. DOMINGO NATIONAL TRADE SCHOOL

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL
Baloc, Sto. Domingo Nueva Ecija

affects their academic performance achievement (Richardson, 2011; Yip, 2009). Students

who are coming to colleges and universities for only professional outcomes meaning to

get the job, and earn good money will have totally different thinking and approaches

inside the classes and during their studies because they will be attending it for their

personal knowledge enhancement. There approach for the acquisition of education with

so much motivation dominantly affects their academic performance and achievement

(Durik, Lovejoy, & Johnson, 2009).

Local Literature

Additionally, family’s expectation can be a big factor that can affect the

motivation level of student on their academic performances and they must be considered

as an important point as attitude towards education (Mutsoto & Abenga, 2010).

Coming across a research, it has been found that the most important learning

behaviors which affects the academic performances of students are the group study/

independent study sessions, discussing the material when needed with group mates and

class activities, involvement in class, their backgrounds, and discussing the course and

class material with faculty when needed (Bennett; 2011). In another study, it is been

concluded that study behaviors of students and their attendances are more important and

affective towards their academic performance as compared to the utilization of their text

books (Berry, Cook, Hill & Stevens 2011).

Anything which poses some kind of threat and challenge upon us is known as

stress. We use the word stress in such conditions when we feel “it’s too much”. We start

to think either we will be able to handle the workload or situation (Nordqvist, 2009).
12

S.Y. 2019-2020

Stress is a reality which we have to face in our everyday life. There are situations when

we start to feel ourselves out of help and start to disturb emotionally and other stressors.

Many people consider stress as an incident happen to them such as injury or job loss

(Centre, 2010). Others think stress is some kind of changes which happen to our physical

body, behavior and mind or over thoughts about situation. Any situation which causes

frustration can also be cause of stress. Everyone have different skill and capabilities so

their style of handling the situations could also differ and it is same for stress level for

each person. It is possible stress level will be different for two persons which are facing

save situations. It depends on which kind of stressors affects them both. Stress is not an

extraordinary thing it is just the part of our daily life. And even it is good for us if its

amount is not too much. It can improve our motivation and also help us to improve our

productivity (Centre, 2010). It depends on how we perceived about stress. It depends how

we react against it, it can affect us negatively as well and if we always react or respond

negatively against stress it also could affect our health and happiness (Robinson, 2010).

Our body naturally gives response upon different types of situation and if the

situation is not favorable, it’s dangerous or you feel threatening it alarms us and it is

called anxiety (Robinson, 2010). And it may cause an unpleasant feeling about the

situation and it can also have an impact on our performance. It may can decrease our

performance in the same situations in which we have performed better without stress.

Another negative result which stress produce is that, it can make them realize us that

situation is out of our abilities or simply it makes our perception that situation is beyond

our abilities and we can’t handle it (Centre, 2010).

13

After reading several articles on stress and its impact on humans, one thing is very

clear that experts agree on this point that stress some time directly affects our body

systems. When we start to feel stress sometimes it causes our blood pressure to rise than

normal. Some start rapid breathing. And one of the very common effects is the change of

heart beat, heat beat rate usually increase significantly when we start to fell stress and our

muscles start to feel tense due to stress even without any physical work load. Some face

disturbance in sleeping and cannot sleep comfortably. There is another point to should be

kept in mind that stress always not came due to only external factors. It also rises due to

internal factors as well. Which consist of feelings, thought, and behavior and habits, there

are some most common factors which can cause for negative stress (Nordqvist, 2009).

Stress could also be depending upon our behavior. It means sometime our

behavior about work could also cause stress if we over scheduling our workload and not

careful about physical health and failed to maintain the health. Stress and threats varies

from person to person it depends heavily based on their past life experiences. Some

people may start to feel negative with very little of unfavorable aspect and situation and

others who are very strong and secure background may not fell stress as much in same

situations and conditions and working loads.

There is another focus group which says stress itself is not a problem but problem

is how we handle stress. If we are not handling it well then it well cause problems

otherwise it won’t cause any problem. And if we will not handle it properly it will

seriously affect our behavior and thoughts (Centre, 2010). These are also some common

impacts of stress upon human behavior and thoughts. They show anger, feel depression,
14

STO. DOMINGO NATIONAL TRADE SCHOOL

having problem in memorizing things, got irritate even with no reason and start to feel

sad. Stress also changes their behavior some times. People start to eat too much or too

little due to stress, some starts to taking drugs or smoking because they feel it will give

them relaxation. Some people withdraw social relationships under stress and some start to

cry. It’s not necessary that everyone will face all of these. Some can have few of them

and it can be different for other one but whenever person feels stress some of these

impacts will came with stress (Nordqvist, 2009).

It has also been found in researches that physical activity of students and their

healthy diets such as unsaturated fats and low sugar helps them in their health behaviors

which affect their cognitive as well as academic performances (Hillman CH, Erickson KI,

Kramer AF; 2009, Francis H, Stevenson R; 2013). The freshman year of the students in

universities is mainly the time when they have lots of changes in their lifestyle and health

behaviors. That’s why they say that Grade Point Average (GPA) of the students which is

used to see a student’s academic performance might get affected by its health related

behavior and activities specially during the first year of university (Deforche B; 2013).

The researches done on the secondary schools shows that student’s health

behavior like diet, active as well as sedentary lifestyle is linked with their academic

performances. Though literature on this topic is very limited in university going students

and is specifically done on U.S citizens (Sigfusdottir ID, Allegrante JP; 2010). A study

suggested that students who are involved in exercising habits are the ones more active

and gets higher GPAs than other students (Keating XD, Castelli D, Ayers SF; 2013).

A research was also done on students of all age, which showed us that sleeping

habit and quality of sleep is also correlated with learning capacity of students and affects

academic performance of them negatively. However, proper sleep found significant

correlation among the academic performances and their health (Eliasson AH, Lettieri CJ;

2010).

CHAPTER III

Research Methodology

This chapter covers the method of research used, the research locale, sample and

sampling procedure, construction and validation of instrument, tools used, and statistical

treatment of data.

Research Design

The study adapted the Descriptive method of research which based on Singh

(2010), is described as appropriate for studies to describe the characteristics or effects of

events for an identified population.

Furthermore, it aims to find out what prevails in present conditions or

relationships, held opinions and beliefs, processes and effects and developing trends. A

Descriptive research seeks to determine the relationship between variables, explores

causes of phenomena, test hypotheses, and develops generalizations, principles or

theories on the basis of its findings.

Research Locale

In view of the importance and emphasis of the government training in vocational

education, a National Trade School was established in Baloc, Sto. Domingo Nueva Ecija

the Sto. Domingo National Trade School. It was created by virtue of House Bill No. 558

which comes into law on June 19, 1965 when the Congressman Eugenio Baltao of the

first District of Nueva Ecija. On July 11, 1971, the school was formally opened and

healed by Mr. Benjamin C. Sandoval who was appointed as the first Vocational School

Pricipal by Director Andres Asistin of the Bureau of Vocational Education A temporary

school site was leased by the Municipal Mayor of Sto. Domingo, Nueva Ecija Hon.

Narciso Andres together with the Municipal Council who allowed the use of two

unoccupied public market building in Baloc. After three (3) years of operation, the first

two (2) buildings were constructed. Two (2) hectares of land was purchased. Additional

two (2) hectares owned by provincial government through Governor Eduardo L. Joson of

Nueva Ecija was leased to the school. In 1990, two (2) hectares of land was finally

donated by Provincial Government through the kindness and effort of Governor Narciso

Nario and the Provincial Board. Another exemplary achievement of our school was the

purchased of 2.2 hectares additional school site which was adjacent of the present site

and purposely used as the athletic ground. In the phase of continuous operation, ten (10)

years have been added in his truly high learning institution. The new administration

building, additional classrooms, and guidance room were constructed. It was very

fulfilling to see the ladders of progress in SDNTS. From (40) students who enrolled in

1971, it was increased to 3, 060 this year. Modern facilities were greatly improved,

instructional materials were provided and innovations in the learning process were

developed. The school proved to be successful for the continuous good performance and

excellence both in academic and technical vocational course. Likewise, the Sto. Domingo

National Trade School became well-known as Vocational School Region III. The school

has been under the five (5) Vocational School Administrators namely: Benjamin C.

Sandoval (1971-1999), Ruben L. Roman (1999-2005), Antonio A. Castro (2005-2012),

According to Jensen, (2013), students learning are different from time to time.

One of the important elements in our education these days is technology. To learn and

teach better, both students and teachers must be aware of new things. To do this, students

need to have the material inside and outside schools.

On the other hand from the total of the 50 respondents majority of the respondents

parents monthly income are 5,000- 10, 000 and because of the technology nowadays the

parents can’t afford to buy their children’s material like laptops and gadgets because of

low monthly income of parents.

This table indicates the daily allowance of the respondents were 27 or 54 percent

were 100 pesos while 1 or 2 percent were 150 and 200 pesos above.

Based on the study of the Little Merry Montessori Center (2019), on the case

study, Allowance is important for students like Bea it use for things you need or for

snacks and food. According to Bea (2019), her allowance is only is one- hundred pesos

only. The total allowance weekly is five- hundred pesos.

The table 9 shows the reason why senior high school learners are feeling stress

where 17 or 34 percent were because of money while 1 or 2 percent were performances.

With regard to background variables, Robert t al. (2011) found a positive effect of

high school performance and school achievement; he found no statistical evidence of

significant association between family income level and academic performance of the

student.

The table indicates that mostly of the respondents why they are feeling stress is

because of money.

CONCLUSIONS

Based on the results of the study, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. It shown in the results that stress slightly affects the Academic

Performance of the students, which students can handle school works and

performances but slightly stress. The Senior High students are affected by their

financial status in the result many students have not enough money to pay school

fees, cannot buy the thing that they want and some projects are too expensive

because of that students are being pressured and stressed.

2. Even though, majority of the respondents are stressed because of financial

reason but the positive outcome is that they still got high grades and become

honors.

RECOMMENDATION

After careful deliberation of the conclusions of the study, the following

recommendations are suggested:

 Students: should maintain their mind to become more peaceful and free

from what the stress they’ve been feeling and to handle stress that may

lead to a better life.
