ACT ONE -- SCENE 1 - PROLOGUE

RECORDED ANNOUNCEMENT - Music and Voices.

The Storyteller - costumed as a Park Ranger - enters on SR

Side Stage from the shadows of the trees. He directly speaks
to the audience.

STORYTELLER
Evening. Well, I see you’ve found your way here too. Don’t blame you at all. I
come out here myself ... every evening about this same time ... partly because of
the sense of peacefulness this time of early evening brings on ... you know ... that
end-of-the-day feeling that comes over the world when the sun begins to dip low
over the horizon. Speaking of horizons, we’re on the northern end of Roanoke
Island - in case you didn’t know, .
(Pointing)
Out there is the beautiful Roanoke Sound. The sunsets over the water out there are
always something to see - But especially so when this place is your vantage point.
And that’s the real reason I come out here every day. It’s because I’ve always
considered this place to be sacred ground.

(Underscore music begins)

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
And perhaps ... just perhaps ... before you leave here tonight, you’ll have that same
feeling. Because, y’see, in many ways, this bit of land is the spiritual birthplace of
our nation. And your being here tonight is one way to memorialize those heroic
men and women who made it so. That’s why, every evening while standing here, I
find myself breathing the same quiet prayer: "Almighty and everlasting God, we
humbly ask for your blessing and favor on this land - Amen".

They call North Carolina the “land of beginnings” for a reason. Four hundred and
thirty-one years ago, in England, was conceived the idea of building a new nation
in a new world, and on this very site where we’ve come together tonight, they laid
the first foundation for that brave new dream. Here those pioneers of a new order,
of a new form of government lived, struggled and suffered. And then? Well, that’s
the story we’re about to share with you.

Now, of course, this place ... this island ... looks very different today than it did
back then. There were those who said you had to sail to the edge of the world to
get here. The first Englishmen to arrive must’ve felt that way. Try to picture it in
your mind, if you can.

(Recorded music cue #2 begins.)

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
A vast wilderness of dense forests and desolate salt sea marshes that seemed to
stretch forever - inhabited by scattered tribes of Indians. Some friendly. Some not.
In the stillness of early evenings ...

Ghosts begin to slowly enter and stand behind the

Storyteller.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
... I sometimes try to imagine how it must’ve appeared to the brave souls who first
made those dangerous voyages to the New World. There are times ... like tonight
... when I can actually feel their presence ... and almost see them gathering here
with us. The playwright Paul Green said it best when he wrote: “Here once walked
the men of dreams, the sons of hope and pain and wonder. With the light of the sun
in their countenance, and their lips singing a new song.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 2.

CHOIR
O GOD THAT MADEST EARTH AND SKY,
AND HEDGED THE RESTLESS SEAS AROUND,
WHO THAT VAST FIRMAMENT ON HIGH
WITH GOLDEN BANDED STARS HATH BOUND --
O GOD OUR FATHER, LORD ABOVE,
O BRIGHT IMMORTAL, HOLY ONE,
SECURE WITHIN THY BOUNDLESS LOVE
WE WALK THIS WAY OF DEATH ALONE.

STORYTELLER
A song for ages yet unborn, A song for us ... the children that came after them.
That’s why this bit of humble earth will always be a sacred place. It was their
vision ... their fadeless dream that has made it so. A living light that still shines
forth as reminder to us all that the dream ... their dream ... still lives. It lives and
shall not die! And in the symbol of their endurance and their sacrifice, let us
renew our courage and our hope. For as we keep faith with them, so shall we keep
faith with ourselves and with future generations everywhere who demand of us
that the ideals of liberty and free men shall continue on the earth.

CHOIR
(Singing)
AMEN! AMEN!

STORYTELLER
In the time of Queen Elizabeth the First, many English men and women, notably
among them Sir Walter Raleigh ...

Indians enter and assume tableau positions. Choir “ghosts”

exit from Side Stage Right - fading into the shadows of the
trees.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
... continued in their dream of founding an English-speaking nation in the new
world. Two explorers, Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlow, along with their
Portuguese pilot, Simon Fernando, were sent out in April, fifteen hundred and
eighty-four, to discover a fitting place for the first settlement.

STORYTELLER crosses down ramp to level part of ramp

and continues across the DS. Totem pole Indians enter and
take their places.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
They found such a place right here on and around Roanoke Island, which they
reached in July of the same year and which was described as “the goodliest land
under the cope of heaven.”

Other Indians enter and take their places for the dance.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
It was a the time of the corn harvest when they arrived and Indians from many of
the local tribes had gathered to perform their incantations and rites before their
god.

STORYTELLER exits Left Wing

SCENE 2 - PANTOMIME INDIAN DANCE

Horn sounds and Indians stop dancing to look around.
Second horn sounds and Indian runner enters from Left
Wing, crosses to Wingina and speaks in sign language -
pointing off left. Uppowac indicates for all Indians except
Wingina, Wanchese, and Manteo and his family to hide
behind huts and tree flats. As the last of the Indians
disappear into hiding, English colonists march on from left
Wing. Group is led by Barlow and Amadas, and includes:
Simon Fernando & Father Martin, First & Second Soldiers
(with flag and cross), two soldiers with box, four more
soldiers (one with scroll). Barlow signals for halt, motions
for box and it is brought forward by the two soldiers
carrying it and is placed before the Indians. Soldiers return
to places in line. Uppowac shakes rattles over box and
Wingina, with apprehension, throws the lid of the box open.
Indians begin to come out of hiding.

Indians pick up box, move it in front of right hut and pull

out trinkets. WINGINA steps forward.

KING WINGINA
(To Barlow)
Nuturuwins, Wingina.

Barlow nods politely - still not understanding the language.

Wingina kneels, cuts square of earth in ground, lifts it and
stands. He stabs the block of earth with a single arrow and
presents it to Barlow. Wingina and Barlow shake hands and
Barlow forces Wingina to kneel on third shake.. Everyone
freezes except Amadas, who reads proclamation.

AMADAS
In the name of our most sovereign Queen Elizabeth, by the grace of God, of
England, France and Ireland, Queen and defender of the faith, know ye that of her
special grace, certain science and mere motion, we do this day take possession...

Storyteller enters on Side Stage Right. Amadas fades voice

out. As his voice fades away, the Storyteller’s voice rises
and takes its place.

STORYTELLER
... we do this day take possession of this Island of Roanoke and the lands to the
west, south, and northward thereof, to have and to hold for her and her assigns and
successors and for her beloved and trusty servant, Sir Walter Raleigh, under her
forever in the name of Almighty God - Amen.

STORYTELLER starts down SR ramp. Indians break from

freeze and begin to strike the village set

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
And so - with the English flag planted proudly over a vast domain of wilderness -
the explorers prepared to return to England, and many of the young Indian braves
wished to return with them. Lots were drawn and ... Wanchese, a kinsman of King
Wingina ...

WANCHESE steps forward

"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 4.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
... and Manteo ...

Manteo steps forward

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
... a young Chieftain, were chosen.

Storyteller crosses to SL ramp as Indian village begins to be

struck.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
Back in England, the explorers were received with great joy.

Storyteller continues up SL ramp.

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
Bells were rung, celebrations were held, and ballads were written about the new
land. And even the beggars on the streets ...

Old Tom enters down audience aisle SL

OLD TOM
(Calling out to audience members)
Alms for the crippled!

STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
... like our friend Old Tom himself ...

OLD TOM
Alms for the blind!

STORYTELLER
... talked about the wonders beyond the seas.

OLD TOM
Alms for the crippled AND th’ blind!

SCENE 3 -- OLD TOM AT TAVERN

STORYTELLER exits Left Wing. Old Tom and Landlord rush
on from Left Shelter. The Landlord is threatening Old Tom
with a cudgel. Tom carries a tankard of ale.

LANDLORD
So, it’s more ale you want, eh? Get OUT, you rapscallion! And stay out of my
tavern, you knave! You thieving scoundrel! Get out! Get OUT!

Landlord turns to leave. Old Tom rises, takes a quick

mouthful of ale, and spews it at Landlord’s back. Landlord
turns back and Old Tom holds up hands, pretending to look
for rain. Old Tom retreats as Landlord moves toward him
again.

OLD TOM
(Cowering)
Please, your reverence, I was sleeping all quiet there like a babe in the corner,
Amongst the kegs.

LANDLORD
And sucking ale all night from the spigot drip. Where’s your money?
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 5.

OLD TOM
Please you, sir, I am but one of the Lord’s poor anointed souls.

LANDLORD
One of the devil’s gluttons ye are. Scat, ye varmint!

Old Tom spits drink. Comic business. Landlord exits to Left

Shelter

OLD TOM
(Dusting himself off)
Lord-a-mercy! What’s England comin’ to when a poor man can no longer beg a
drink? “Get out, get out,” the Landlord says. “I have guest, visitors, all true
followers of the Queen and Sir Walter Raleigh.” Hah!

Tom takes a drink

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

If you ask me, everybody in London has lost their collective minds over the New
World and Sir Walter Raleigh? Well then - I’m no longer lonesome, for they’re all
fools like me. Yet - they are greater fools than I. For item - do they not all run
around with pipes in their mouths now, and smoke pouring from the two chimneys
of their noses like their very liver were a roaring red-hot fire inside their bellies?
Item - do they not go in great crowds, followin’ after them two Indian kings like
the twin sons of Noah had come back to rule the earth? And they’re nothin’ more
than plain ordinary men -- like meself, mayhap ... only with a lot more turkey
feathers. Well, if that’s the case, I should be knighted for my wisdom and set
t’walk about in silver armor like the great Sir Walter hisself.

Tom crosses to tavern sign.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

(Sitting at tavern sign)
Ahhh ... after all, I am a fool. For a fool is he who speaks to the shadows and gets
no answer in return. Well then - I shall tell it to God ... behind th’ shadows.
Between Him and me is a great confidence ...
(Raising his voice to Heaven)
And God knows I be cold and hungry!

Tom shrugs and crosses down to bushes beside the ramp,

steps into gap between bushes, and adjusts clothing for
bedtime

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Ah well, now I lie me down in His mercy and sleep on a poor man’s bed ...
whereon and wherein ... blessed be His name, we shall all sleep together on that
last great day. And then there’ll be neither fool nor wise men.
(Singing)
HAST THOU HEARD WHAT WISE MEN SAY --
EVERY DOG WILL HAVE HIS DAY
COME THEN DOGS LET’S QUICK AWAY
HUNTING FOR OUR OWN.
STARVED AND HOMELESS HERE WE DIE,
NAKED IS THE BED WE LIE,
WISDOM GIVETH US WHO CRY
NOTHIN’ BUT A BONE.
So, where’s th’ bone?

Tom returns to bushes and settles in for a long snooze.

"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 6.

SCENE 4 - GARDEN PARTY

CHORUS
(Entering on SL & SR side stages)
WE COME FROM FIELD AND TOWN,
FROM BYRE AND FOREST GREEN,
IN HONOR OF THE CROWN -
HONOR OF THE CROWN,
THAT FITS OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN.

FROM SMILING HILL AND DOWN

WE FRAGRANT GARLANDS GLEAN
TO WEAVE A VOTIVE CROWN -
WEAVE A VOTIVE CROWN
THAT FITS OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN.

FOR ENGLAND’S GREAT RENOWN.

HER VIRTUE SHINES SERENE.
AND LOVE SHALL BE THE CROWN -
LOVE SHALL BE THE CROWN,
THAT FITS OUR GRACIOUS QUEEN!

The courtiers enter and begin their dance.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Ladies and gentlemen, let it be known that I am the Master of the Queen’s
Ceremonies, and in her Majesty’s name I bid you welcome to this our little garden
party. This is an evening of merriment, and the Queen will trip a toe democratic
with ye all. You will shortly be initiated to wonders too, and then more wonders
still. For down by the pond’s edge ...

The MC points offstage in the wrong direction. The

townspeople point in the correct direction. The MC follows
suit.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES (CONT'D)

Ah! For down by the pond’s edge is spread for all delight a most marvelous repast
-- dishes of capons, sparrows and singing larks, roast boars’s head and blackbirds
and an oxen or two, topped off with barrels of sack. And also a new dish -- a
commodity lately brought from the new world and now the sudden taste of fashion
and good form -- known as po-ta-to pie. Sir Walter Raleigh gives the feast!

Fanfare begins

MASTER OF CEREMONIES (CONT'D)

The Queen approaches! Let us hear music!

The Master of Ceremonies rushes to the Left Side Stage as

Queen Elizabeth and her entourage enter. Guards enter
carrying banners.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Unto my people, greetings!

TOWNSPERSON
God bless you, your majesty!

ALL
Long live the Queen! Long live the Queen! Long live the Queen!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 7.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES
Your majesty -- that most excellent artist and cartographer, Master John White,
gentleman, late returned from that new land beyond the sea! His most beautiful
daughter, Mistress Eleanor White. Also, your majesty’s most loyal servant, Captain
Ananias Dare! And that valiant pilot of the ocean seas, Simon Fernando.

GOV.WHITE
To our Queen and princess, I present these poor drawings of mine of Roanoke
Island in the New World.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Your talent and bravery are one, Master White. You shall be rewarded.

GOV. WHITE
(Bowing)
Your Majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Ah! Master Dare.

ANANIAS DARE
(Bowing)
My Queen!

QUEEN ELIZABETH
And thee, my child?

GOV.WHITE
My daughter, your Majesty.

ANANIAS DARE
My betrothed, your majesty, marking the union of two of thy most loyal houses.
Craving your blessing on the union.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
You have my blessing, Master Dare.
(To Eleanor)
Rise, my child. Beautify owes little allegiance to power.

Eleanor turns to resume her place. The Queen raises her

hand.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

A moment.

Eleanor turns back to the Queen

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

So, Mistress Eleanor White, I hear that you are inclined toward Roanoke Island
and the wilderness.

ELEANOR
Yes, your Majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Why?

ELEANOR
If England’s men have dreams, so have her women.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 8.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Ho! What then, Master Dare?

ANANIAS DARE
If her men are England’s power and glory, your Majesty ... then her women ... are
her glory and power ... and both in thee excelling.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Flatterer.
(To Eleanor)
And now, my child, no more of these mad thoughts. Leave the taming of the
wilderness to sterner hands.

ELEANOR
But your majesty

Sir Walter Raleigh’s fanfare sounds as he enters from SR

wing.

TOWNSPERSON
Sir Walter Raleigh!

The Queen proceeds down ramp to center stage. The crowd

explodes in cheers and applause as Sir Walter Raleigh
enters from right wing, followed by Manteo and Wanchese.
The Queen and Sir Walter meet just left of Center Stage.
Raleigh bows.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
You seem to please the people well, Sir Walter, you ...
... and yours.
(Indicating the Indians)

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I owe the people many thanks, your majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
No doubt. But even so, you’re wise. There’s safety in it.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

But safety most in the light of THY bright countenance, my queen.

Raleigh bows. The Queen extends her hand. Raleigh takes it

in his.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
You please me too, you strange and proud and dreaming man.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I would you found nothing strange in my dreams, your majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
But I do. Know ye -- we have an ancient foe that keeps us on our guard. All
strength, all resources, all intent MUST be against Spain. And yet my Shepard of
the Ocean, my fretful child, walks in his sleep, talks in his dreams on one thing
only ... the New World beyond the sea. Ha! But I am queen, and Philip is my
enemy ... and being so, I’ll keep my soldiers, leaders, HERE, to break his power
down and not to waste our purpose on some fancied empty wilderness. This for all
the world to hear!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 9.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

There is an ancient saying that if a tree would grow great it must send its roots
deep and wide. In its shade the lesser trees will die. So it is with a nation, so with
an idea, or by your leave, a dream.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
But first the tree must be made to live at its central heart. Such a tree is England.
Or as a house, make its first foundations strong, then build atop of it.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

And yet, your Majesty ...

QUEEN ELIZABETH
(Interrupting)
No more of the privy-public matters.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Bowing)
Your majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Proceed.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Taking the turf from Simon Fernando)
To thee, most gracious queen, I present this bit of earth in token of the new land
which I have won in thy name.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
My brave knight beyond compare, you shall be rewarded.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

And these kingly subjects -- Chief Manteo and Chief Wanchese -- I present to you,
most gracious sovereign. Thy rightful sway and the sacred crown of England they
do acknowledge.

Raleigh motions and Manteo and Wanchese cross in front of

queen, kneel, then rise and sit on edge of green. Raleigh
crosses to Indians and takes tobacco and potato. He gives
them to Queen

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

And out of the richness of the wilderness, we offer these -- the tobacco plant,
sacred to the Indians -- also a humble root, the potato.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
But what of the vast mines of gold and silver and precious stones you promised
us?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

These two may prove a greater source of wealth to your kingdom, your majesty.

Raleigh crosses to Indians and takes pipe and presents it to

Queen

QUEEN ELIZABETH
La, Sir Walter, worse and worse. So that is the wondrous smoking instrument.
Hmm, it smells foul enough.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Try it, your majesty. It is good for the vapors.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 10.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
I have no vapors.

Queen takes puff on pipe and chokes. The Master of

Ceremonies and courtiers rush to her aid. She regains her
composure and waves the courtiers away.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

Back! Back!
(Regaining her composure)
Conscious of the great worth of our loyal servant, Sir Walter Raleigh, and of all
those brave and daring subjects who crossed the unknown sea to spread the name
and conquest of England further, I accept this day the tokens of their loyalty and
service. And I do designate and order that from this time forth the new and western
empire shall be named ...

Raleigh bows his head in anticipation. The Queen “milks”

the suspense by taking a sip of wine from a cup handed to
her by a Page.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

“Virginia” -- in honor of myself, England’s virgin queen!

TOWNSPEOPLE
Long live the Queen! Long live the Queen!

Queen exits Left Wing, followed by White, Dare, Eleanor,

Fernando and courtiers Manteo, Wanchese and Raleigh exit
Right Wing.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES
In honor of the new land Virginia there will be dances, games and fireworks! And
remember the feast to which you are invited.

The crowd begins to surge forward, pushing the Master of

Ceremonies along with them.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES (CONT'D)

But only to the pond, and no further, my good people. I counsel ye, be temperate,
circumspect and of good bearing ...

The trampled Master of Ceremonies has now been left alone

onstage. The crowd has pushed past him and is gone.

MASTER OF CEREMONIES (CONT'D)

... and all will be well!

Master of Ceremonies exits haughtily into Left Wing.

SCENE 5 - AFTER GARDEN PARTY

As Master of Ceremonies exits, Eleanor runs in from Left
Wing. As she crosses center John Borden comes down Left
Ramp

ELEANOR
Sir Walter? Sir Walter! Sir Walter!

She realizes that Raleigh is gone. Dejectedly, she turns to

leave, looks up and sees Borden
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 11.

ELEANOR (CONT'D)
John Borden!

JOHN BORDEN
(Bowing stiffly)
Your servant, ma’am.

ELEANOR
What brings you here?

JOHN BORDEN
Some matters of business only.

ELEANOR
And the farm -- all goes well there?

JOHN BORDEN
It does. The harvest is thick on. The servants ask for you and the master. When
will you return?

ELEANOR
At the Queen’s leave.

JOHN BORDEN
(Sitting in Queen’s empty throne)
When you have had your fill -- of this.

ELEANOR
Still those dark and bitter words, John Borden.

JOHN BORDEN
My tongue was ever wayward like my heart. You have cause to know that.

ELEANOR
Yes ... wayward.

JOHN BORDEN
But, nay to that. The wrong is hers who flies against the feelings of her heart.

ELEANOR
You dare accuse me?

JOHN BORDEN
MY tongue at least is honest. It speaks the truth -- a hopeless, final word.

ELEANOR
Would my tongue be wayward too.

JOHN BORDEN
(Taking her into his arms)
Let it, Eleanor! Let it speak for both of us.

He kisses her.

ELEANOR
(Pulling away)
Please, John.

JOHN BORDEN
This Captain Dare -- you love him not.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 12.

ELEANOR
It is all settled. I shall marry Captain Dare.

JOHN BORDEN
For pride and place and family name. Thus the toil of a man’s two hands that
would labor for you count for nothing in your world.

Sir Walter enters from Right Wing with two courtiers.

Raleigh holds a map and is in a discussion with the two
courtiers until he sees Borden

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Greetings, John Borden!

Raleigh nods to the courtiers and they exit with the map.

JOHN BORDEN
Sir Walter!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Seeing Eleanor)
And you, fair Eleanor?

ELEANOR
(With a curtsey)
Sir Walter.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

What news from Devon, Master Borden?

JOHN BORDEN
Two dozen men are ready to follow you. And there will be others.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Good, good! And obedient to orders?

JOHN BORDEN
Aye, as independent men should be. No more.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Ah, we Devon folk are ALL like that. Something in the sea or air that breeds this
jealous freedom.
(Noticing Borden and Eleanor gazing at each other)
But pardon. You know this lady, John?

JOHN BORDEN
(Making a rather cold bow to Eleanor)
Yes. Lady.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Fair Eleanor. Beauteous and bright ... is she not?

JOHN BORDEN
Yes. Bright ... like that star in heaven there ... and no closer.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

You are neighbors, are you not?

ELEANOR
Old friends ... somewhat.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 13.

JOHN BORDEN
Aye. Somewhat. I am a tenant on her father’s farm. I plow his land.

ELEANOR
Oh, more than that, Sir Walter. He leads the men. They look to him and ...

JOHN BORDEN
Good night, Sir Walter. Good night to all.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Good night.

JOHN BORDEN
Pray command me, Sir Walter. I am your servant.

Borden quickly exits up Left Ramp

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

As true a lad as ever bore the Queen’s arms. True steel ... and mettlesome.

ELEANOR
(Gazing at ramp where Borden has just exited)
He is.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

And worthy any woman’s deep regard ... Say’st so?

ELEANOR
I would say so if ...

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I have known you most of your life. What is your wish, fair Eleanor?

ELEANOR
I wish ... I wish that England’s ways were different.
(Turning to Raleigh)
I mean, Sir Walter, I wish to sail to Roanoke on the next voyage. No more.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Whether young John Borden goes or not?

ELEANOR
I am betrothed, Sir Walter -- to Captain Ananias Dare, and together we would sail.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

In spite of every risk you’d go?

ELEANOR
Yes!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Shipwreck perhaps. A watery grave. Or, missing that, starvation on some lonely
strand.

ELEANOR
YES! That too!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Even oaken-hearted men quail before such a voyage.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 14.

ELEANOR
And may I go?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Taking her hands in his)
If only there were a dozen such women in England!

ELEANOR
I could find you twenty such women in Devon alone!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Do, and your name will outlast mine.
(Turning away and crossing SL)
But I’m afraid we waste words. There may be no colony, men or women. You
marked the Queen’s attitude. Again and again she denies me leave to go myself to
lead the enterprise. Our future lies beyond the sea and every wasted day cries out
its waste.
(Turning back to Eleanor)
But, why do YOU dream of such an undertaking?

ELEANOR
I only know now, day and night, I feel this narrow England, and hear the call of the
unknown world sounding in my ear. I do, Sir Walter, like YOU I do! Are not
women adventurous like men? Are they not?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Taking her hands in his)
They are, thank God, the best of them!

Queen enters down steps from Right Rear Stage, followed by

Master of Ceremonies (carrying a stool), banner carriers
and courtier couples.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
La! What a wrecking of time when a Queen must run after a man! Come, Sir
Walter. Is it state matters that keep you here in secret?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Somewhat of stateCRAFT, your majesty. Question -- shall England be an empire
or an island?

QUEEN ELIZABETH
From what I hear of this child, she is capable of giving advice on the subject.

The Queen waves Eleanor away. Eleanor moves a few feet

back and curtsies.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

Well, Sir Walter, while they eat and play the games we must settle YOUR little
matter. Now, no growling or chewing the lip behind my back. Rather thanks. You
may send your colony to Roanoke.

Eleanor curtsies. Raleigh bows and kisses the Queen’s hand

ELEANOR SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Your majesty. My Queen!

QUEEN ELIZABETH
But you shall not go.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 15.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I know. I am reserved for Spain.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
You are. What think you of Master Ralph Lane to lead the enterprise?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

He’s brave enough.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
And tactful.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

He is very brave.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
But bravery most is needed now. Let him set forth next month with the good pilot
Fernando and some hundred men ...

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

(Interrupting)
But without women there is no stability, no permanence, no home, your Majesty.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
(Holding up her hand for silence)
With a hundred MEN ... who can be spared to build a fort on Roanoke Island, to
lay out roads, plant fields. Some months hence, you blessed women can be sent --
IF you can persuade them to it.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Your proclamation would persuade them.

We suddenly hear music coming from offstage Left

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Ah! Tonight, I am for play, not argument.

The Queen and her entourage begin to exit towards the Left
Wing. Eleanor, delighted at the news, moves toward Sir
Walter. The Queen sees this.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

Come, child. He dreams his empires best alone.

Queen exits Left Wing, followed by Eleanor, Master of

Ceremonies, courtiers and banner bearers. There is the
sound of fireworks and crowd cheering offstage. Sir Walter
starts to exit up Left Ramp

CROWD (OFFSTAGE)
Sir Walter Raleigh! Sir Walter Raleigh! Sir Walter Raleigh!

SCENE 6 - RALEIGH & TOM

Old Tom awakens and rises from the bushes in front of Left
Ramp.

OLD TOM
Lord-A-Mercy! I had a most frightful dream! The world was monstrously overrun
by lice ... with two legs!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 16.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

An apt dream, old man.

Sir Walter continues further up the ramp until he’s stopped

again by Old Tom

OLD TOM
Why, ‘tis the great Sir Walter, communing with his soul!
(Hurrying around bushes to the Left Ramp)
They’re celebrating you, my Lord. Sir Walter!

Raleigh stops and turns back toward Tom

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Don’t you know me? It’s ME! Thy old neighbor. Tom! Down in Budleigh. All set
to do thee honor too.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

You’ve changed since I knew thee, Tom.

OLD TOM
(Doffing his hat)
Aye, aye. Sorrow and grief do eats away a man’s mortal looks, as they say. And
YOU’VE changed too ...
(Bowing grandly)
... SIR Walter. Ah, but hearts remain the same, eh, old friend?

Tom holds out his hand in hopes of a handout from Sir

Walter. Raleigh smiles and hands Tom a coin

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Here. Get thee something to eat. Eat, not drink, Tom.

OLD TOM
Bless you.

Raleigh starts off toward the Left Shelter

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

(Looking a coin and realizing it’s more than he anticipated)
Bless YOU!

Raleigh chuckles and starts off again.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

(Calling to Sir Walter)
Mayhap I can do THEE a favor sometime ... small and pitiful-like though it be.

Raleigh hesitates, getting an idea. His face brightens and he

turns back to Tom

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I MAY need the, Tom. Aye. Aye! And hundreds more of thy kind. Remember.

Raleigh hurries off into Left Shelter

OLD TOM
I’ll remember. I’ll remember! Whistle but a note of thy great plans and I’ll come a-
running! A true man! Stand an denounce.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 17.

CROWD (OFFSTAGE)
Sir Walter Raleigh! Sir Walter Raleigh! Sir Walter Raleigh!

Another burst of fireworks.

OLD TOM
Landlord? Landlord! Another mug of Plymouth ale!

As fireworks burst, Historian takes place on Left Side Stage

SCENE 7 - RALPH LANE BATTLE

HISTORIAN
In the spring of 1585, a colony of 108 men was sent out from England under the
command of Ralph Lane. He took possession of the Indian village on the north end
of Roanoke Island where we are gathered tonight. He refortified the place and
named it the “Fort Raleigh”. Within a few months, the settlement was firmly
established, and would have survived, no doubt, but for Lane’s cruelty to the
Indians. They rebelled and Lane decided to teach them a lesson, by force.

The lights begin to rise on Right Side Stage

HISTORIAN (CONT'D)
One summer night, he and his men attacked King Wingina as he slept by his
campfire ... and because of this, Wanchese became the deadly enemy of the white
man.

INDIAN DANCE and ATTACK BY RALPH LANE AND HIS

MEN as choreographed and staged on Right Side Stage.

SCENE 8 - PORT OF PLYMOUTH

As Uppowoc finishes dance and throws sand, Historian

enters from Right Shelter and crosses down ramp as he
delivers his speech. He crosses downstage and ends up on
Stage Left by the conclusion of his speech.

HISTORIAN
The grieving Indians desperately attacked the colony in an effort to avenge their
murdered King, Wingina, but were driven off. Finally, Lane decided to abandon
the colony. The City of Raleigh was left deserted. A few days later, Sir Richard
Grenville arrived with bountiful supplies, but too late. He left fifteen brave men to
hold the fort in the Queen’s name, and sailed for England to report to Raleigh. But
despite this failure, Raleigh persisted in his dream. At great expense, he got
together another colony. And this time, it was to be a permanent settlement, for it
consisted of men, women and children who were to build homes in the New
World. And on May 8, 1587, the last of the expedition assembled at the Port of
Plymouth, ready to set sail upon the long voyage.

Historian exits into Left Wing as Colonists enter down Left

Stage Ramp - led by Old Tom & Dame Coleman carrying
bundles. Other Colonists enter through Left Wing, carrying
props, as the scene unfolds from Stage Left to Stage Right.

BUSKER’S DANCE
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 18.

There is much laughter and excitement ... until Simon

Fernando appears on top of the loading ramp. The noise
dies away immediately.

SIMON FERNANDO
Three times! Three times I have been pilot on her Majesty’s ships sailing foreign
seas. And three times, the merciful Father has seen fit to allow me to return safe
home again. I was pilot for his honor, Ralph Lane, on his last expedition to
Roanoke. I was pilot before for the brave Captains Amadas and Barlowe. And with
Sir Francis Drake, I sailed a thousand miles along that treacherous coast. Can I
speak?
(Shouting)
I ask you ... CAN I SPEAK?

VOICE FROM CROWD

Aye, Simon! Speak it out. We’re listening to ye!

SAILOR
I vouch for ye, Simon. I was with Lane, God forbid!

SIMON FERNANDO
(Crossing down ramp and onto the stage)
And now I am appointed to pilot THIS expedition ... to Virginia. And such a
scurvy mixture of the Queen’s subjects, I never saw before!

OLD TOM
We be true men! And good as is all England!

ALL
Aye, that we be!

SIMON FERNANDO
Good men? Aye! And half of you lay behind bars for crimes on the Queen’s
highway ‘til Sir Walter fetched ye out to do his bidding!

DAME COLEMAN
Speak not against Sir Walter! We owe our freedom to him!

SIMON FERNANDO
Freedom? Freedom, you call it? But wait ‘til the tale is ended. Give over this
undertaking, I tell you. Give over before it is too late.

DAME COLEMAN
HA!

Dame Coleman strides to Fernando, glares at him and spits.

She then heads to the loading ramp.

SIMON FERNANDO
If Ralph Lane and a hundred strong men failed on Roanoke Island, what do you
think will happen to your women and children? And what do you think has already
happened to the fifteen men left in that wretched place by Sir Richard Granville?

OLD TOM
Whaaaat?

SIMON FERNANDO
I wager I already know. They’re dead! The wilderness has swallowed them up, as
it will swallow YOU! John Cage! What say YOU, John?
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 19.

JOHN CAGE
Neighbors! I say it’s gospel. Every living word! “Leven months I was there in that
cursed land, and I would not go again for all the jewels in Spain!

One group starts toward the loading ramp, led by George

Howe

SIMON FERNANDO
Where are ye hurrying, George Howe?

GEORGE HOWE
The ships are ready to sail ... and we should be aboard!

JOHN CAGE
(Calling to someone in Howe’s group)
Harken to me, Tony. Stay here. Here, lad!

Howe and his group go up the loading ramp and exit. A

horn sounds as they go.

SIMON FERNANDO
Blow! Blow on, old horn of Jericho! Let the walls of the world fall in, but you
won’t crush me. My luck holds!

DAME COLEMAN
Enough! Let’s be on our way!

Coleman exits to ship

SIMON FERNANDO
I tell you, only death awaits you on this mad adventure. Death in that desolate
country. This business is not for your good, nor for the good of England. The
Queen does not countenance it. Not a penny of Crown money goes into it. Then
who profits by it?

OLD TOM
Whoooo?

As Fernando continues to speak, Dame Coleman enters at

the top of the loading ramp with John Borden. She points to
Fernando in the crowd.

SIMON FERNANDO
I’ll tell you! One man ... and one alone. Sir Walter Raleigh! All for his honor and
glory it is. All to spread HIS fame across the world. He has no care for YOU. He
has no ...

JOHN BORDEN
(From top of ramp)
That’s a LIE, Simon Fernando!

TOWNSPEOPLE
John Borden!
Down with John Borden!
Down with Sir Walter!
Shame on ye! Shame!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 20.

JOHN BORDEN
(Crossing halfway down the loading ramp)
Are we men and women of England or hirelings of Spain?

SIMON FERNANDO
Watch your words, Master Borden.

JOHN BORDEN
I’m watching ‘em! Aye, and thee too.

Borden steps off the loading ramp and begins to work his
way through the crowd

JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)

Friends! We have set our faces toward the new world, toward a new life for us all.
And are we to be stopped here, dulled and dead in our tracks, by an old woman’s
tale of danger and hardship? Then go home! Go home now and the ships waiting
out there may rot where they lie. Danger and hardship? Aye! The better for it. So
we may test the manhood in us, if we be men ... if we be women worth the name.
Who is this Simon Fernando that you should listen to him? A Spaniard with a
Spanish name!

Simon goes for his sword, thinks better of it, and simply
sneers at Borden

JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)

Like his Master Phillip, he fears a colony in Virginia. He wishes us to fail. But
there will be NO failing ... not if the sea and the wilderness and all Spain herself
conspire against us. No! For blow against blow, we will give them BACK again!

TOWNSPEOPLE
Speak, lad!
Bravo, John Borden!
We’ll stand with ye, John!

As Borden continues, an entourage led by Sir Walter, enters

from Left Shelter. Raleigh is followed by Father Martin and
Eleanor, Ananias Dare and Gov. White, Manteo and
Wanchese, and a soldier carrying the Coat of Arms. They
pause at top of ramp.

JOHN BORDEN
We have made the cast. We turn our backs upon this little England -- to go forth to
struggles, to work, to conquer that unknown wilderness -- to build a nation there.
OUR nation! And with God’s help, we’ll build it!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Bravo, John Borden!

TOWNSPEOPLE
It’s Sir Walter!

OLD TOM
Three cheers for Sir Walter Raleigh! Hip - Hip ..

TOWNSPEOPLE
Hooray!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 21.

OLD TOM
Hip-hip!

TOWNSPEOPLE
Hooray!

OLD TOM
Hip-hip!

TOWNSPEOPLE
HOORAY!

During the cheers, Raleigh and entourage continue on to

Main Stage. Raleigh mounts table and addresses the crowd.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Friends! Pioneers of a new nation so to be! I come to you in this parting moment in
all humility and pride. Humility that to English men and women is granted the
privilege of this high endeavor ... and pride that YOU, my old neighbors of Devon
are to share in it!

The crowd cheers

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

It is no wise strange that you hesitate at this last moment. For no one can question
what it means to take this step. Our good pilot, Fernando here, has unrolled HIS
doleful story to your ears.

OLD TOM
Aye, that he has!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I know. Aye! There ARE dangers, hardships, unaccountable chances of weal and
woe that await you. But that such men and women as you, and John Borden, and
Mistress Eleanor Dare will win over them, I cannot doubt. As for Fernando, his
bark is worse than his bit. True, he prefers plundering on the seas to the dull
business of colonizing, but as both the Queen and I know, he is the best pilot that
sails and English ship. He WILL be true to the trust reposed in him, and land you
safely in Virginia.

Raleigh extends his hand to Fernando, who considers for a

moment, then shakes Raleigh’s hand. Fernando then quickly
crosses and exits into the Right Wing. The crowd cheers and
applauds.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

And herewith, as a trust in your permanent planting, this sign and symbol from the
Queen ...

Raleigh takes the Coat of Arms from the soldier and holds it
aloft before the crowd.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

... The Coat of Arms for the Cittie of Raleigh in the New World!

The crowd cheers. Raleigh hands the Coat of Arms to John

Borden
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 22.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

And now, to the authority of Governor White and his associates, Captain Ananias
Dare, I beg your obedience.

Raleigh crosses Downstage Center

SIR WALTER RALEIGH (CONT'D)

Would God that I might sail with them and you, but I am reserved once more for
the wars at home. But my heart goes with you, my hopes ... and my dreams. God
bless you!

DAME COLEMAN
God bless YOU, Sir Walter!

GOV. WHITE
Lead on to the ships!

OLD TOM
Aye, me hearties! Let’s GO!

As crowd begins song, FAREWELL ENGLAND, Borden

takes Coat of Arms and crosses to loading ramp. Colonists
begin to exit up loading ramp and offstage. Ananias Dare
and Eleanor stop , and Eleanor turns back to curtsey before
Sir Walter who kisses her on the forehead. Borden and Dare
exit, followed (as last off) by Eleanor.

ALL
OH, FAREWELL ENGLAND, FAREWELL ALL,
AND HERE’S A PARTING HAND;
WE LEAVE TO YOU OUR HEARTH AND HALL,
TO SEEK AN UNKNOWN LA-A-AN-AND,
TO SEEK AN UNKNOWN LAND!
OH, THE STORMY WINDS MAY BLOW,
AND THE RAGING SEAS MAY ROAR.
BUT MERRILY WE SAIL AWAY TO THAT FAIR LAND
VIRGINIA-AY-AY-AY
TO THAT FAIR LAND VIRGINIA!

As the ship starts the cross from Right to Left, Sir Walter
draws sword and turns to follow ship with hilt. He finally
turns and faces audience and plunges sword into green,
while kneeling and placing his hat over his heart.

CHOIR
WE COMMEND TO THY ALMIGHTY PROTECTION, THY SERVANTS,
FOR WHOSE PRESERVATION UPON THE GREAT DEEP,
OUR PRAYERS ARE DESIRED.
GUARD THEM, WE BESEECH THEE,
FROM THE DANGERS OF THE SEA,
FROM SICKNESS AND DEATH,
AND FROM EVERY EVIL.
CONDUCT THEM IN SAFETY
TO THE HAVEN WHERE THEY WOULD BE.
AMEN!

END OF ACT I
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 23.

ACT TWO - SCENE 1 (THE ARRIVAL)

CHORUS
LORD, THOU HAST BEEN OUR REFUGE
FROM ON GENERATION TO ANOTHER.
BEFORE THE MOUNTAINS WERE BROUGHT FORTH
OR EVER THE EARTH AND THE WORLD WERE MADE,
THOU ART GOD FROM EVERLASTING AND WORLD WITHOUT END.

About midway of the song, the ship moves across from right
to left. A few Indians enter and watch the ship approach.
THOU TURNEST MAN TO DESTRUCTION.
AGAIN THOU SAYEST, COME AGAIN, YE CHILDREN OF MEN.
FOR A THOUSAND YEARS IN THY SIGHT
ARE BUT AS YESTERDAY.
SEEING THAT IS PAST AS A WATCH IN THE NIGHT.

The Indians hear a drumbeat and disperse. The“Dare

Patrol” marches on from Right Wing: Ananias Dare,
Wanchese & Manteo, a drummer and flag- bearer, three
pairs of soldiers, and finally, John Borden. Patrol stops
upon command from Dare, then spreads out and looks
uneasily around.

ANANIAS DARE
(To the men)
Halt!
(Calling)
Hello! Friends! Show yourselves! Hello!

Uppowoc enters at top of Right Ramp. The Colonists raise

their weapons, not knowing what to expect

UPPOWAC
(Calling)
Yona - yona - ee - gay - Wankees! Yona - yona - Wankees!

Wanchese crosses to right side of stage to meet Uppowoc,

who falls to his knees in front of Wanchese

WANCHESE
Mish-wi-aga, Wingina?

WANCHESE (CONT'D)

Ne-bah-na-tee-o, Wingina!

ANANIAS DARE
Back in formation! Form fours!

The men obey. Dare crosses to Wanchese

"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 24.

ANANIAS DARE (CONT'D)

What news of the fifteen men, Chief Wanchese?

WANCHESE
Wanchese no more chief. Wanchese king now! Wanchese go to his people.

Wanchese and Uppowoc exit into trees behind Right Side

Stage

JOHN BORDEN
(Rushing forward towards the ramp)
Stop him! Stop him, Captain Dare!

ANANIAS DARE
Soldier John Borden! Once more, I command you to your place ... in the ranks!

JOHN BORDEN ANANIAS DARE

But, Captain Dare ... ! If the noble Indian has traffic with his people in the
forest, we have no right to stop him.

Borden reluctantly returns to his place in the ranks

ANANIAS DARE (CONT'D)

Back in formation!

The men assemble once more.

ANANIAS DARE (CONT'D)

We will now advance to the end of the island in search of our friends. Advance at
guard!

Patrol starts to exit up Left Ramp into trees. Borden and

Manteo pause together

JOHN BORDEN
What do you think, Chief Manteo?

MANTEO

White men maybe dead ... gone. I will speak with my people. They will know.

Borden and Manteo hurry off to rejoin the patrol.

SCENE 2 - OLD TOM & THE DEAD BODY

Old Tom staggers on from Right Wing

OLD TOM
Wait, comrades! Wait for me!

Old Tom crosses to green, stops, leans on his gun

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Leave me, do they, all in the heat of their youth and great marchin’, and me with
the weight of years on me back?
(Calling offstage)
Never mind me! I’ll be fine!
(Sitting on the ground)
Lord a’mercy!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 25.
OLD TOM (CONT'D)
They’re tearing off through this wilderness, like their garters were on fire ...and
here I am all hacked and slashed to bits with thorns and godless briars!
(Pouring sand from his shoe, then putting shoe back on)
I could certainly do with a mug of Plymouth ale right about now!
(He sees the wooden keg nearby)
Ah, ha! Ask and you shall receive!
(He goes to keg, uncorks it, but it’s empty)
I just had a troubling thought. For all we know, THIS place right here could very
well be the garden spot of the New World!
(Walking back to his spot on the edge of the green and sitting once more)
Lord above! What a wilderness and desolation! How green the grass grows back
in England. I don’t mind sayin’ I could almost wish me back there, tastin’ a good
leg of mutton on th’ Devon hills.
(Looking around)
Well, well, well. So this is Roanoke Island in the New World.
(Lying on the green)
Yuck! This is the land of Sir Walter’s great visioning and Mistress Dare’s wise
words of encouragement.
(Sitting back up)
What a woman! And she’s to be a mother of a new babe in two weeks or three. Ah,
well ... poor babe.
(Standing uneasily and staggering. His legs begin to shake
uncontrollably. He speaks to them:)
Now this may come as a big surprise to you both, but we’re on dry land now!

His legs stop shaking for a moment, only to begin again.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

It’s no use! Heave, ships. Blow, storms. And always the same!
(Covers his mouth and swallows hard)
We are sailin’ to the new land of freedom! We are pioneers of a dream, me
hearties. Well, all I can say is a blind man eats many a fly.

Tom bends over to pick up his gun and looks between his
legs as an Indian runs from Left Wing to Left Shelter.
Suddenly fearful, Tom looks through his legs again. He
grabs his gun and cautiously moves to the corner of the Left
Cabin, singing ...

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

O THE STORMY WINDS MAY BLOW, HO, HO, HO, HO ...
AND THE RAGIN’ SEAS MAY ROAR ...

Tom examines cabins. Log falls. Indian appears at extreme

left corner of Left Cabin. Tom puts hat on gun barrel. Indian
takes hat and puts it on his head. Old Tom and Indian step
around corner of cabin at the same time and come fact-to-
face. Tom drops gun. It fires. Indian rushes offstage left. Tom
staggers back to his right. Dead body falls out of cabin. Old
Tom sees it and begins to tremble with uncontrollable fright.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Captain Dare! Captain Dare? Where is every living soul?

Tom picks up his hat and gun and starts beating on his chest
to catch his breath.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 26.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Peace, you organ of wind! After all, they are near at hand. And Governor White is
approachin’.
(Putting gun on his shoulder and standing at rigid attention)
Besides ... I am sworn to bravery and great endeavor. Sir Walter Raleigh depends
on me!
(Suddenly almost collapsing)
Oh, LORD!

SCENE 3 - THE INDIANS THREATEN

Governor White, Fernando, Father Martin and Colonists

enter from Right Wing

OLD TOM
Governor White! Good Governor White! Look here! Look here!

White and men rush over to examine the dead body

GOV. WHITE
One of Grenville’s men. The Indian method. They broke his bones.

SIMON FERNANDO
As they will yours and your followers.

Borden takes a step towards Fernando.

GOV. WHITE
(Motioning to Borden)
Peace!

The Dare patrol marches down the Left Ramp from the
shelter. They are followed by Manteo, Manteo’s son and wife

GOV. WHITE (CONT'D)

See how bravely my son, Captain Dare, marches. The Indians could ambush the
whole of them.

SIMON FERNANDO
And they will.

ANANIAS DARE
(To the men behind him)
HALT! Rest.
(To Gov. White)
We have sorrowful tidings, Sir, from Manteo’s wife.

MANTEO
She see -- Indians come -- kill white men last moon. Some drown. All dead.

SIMON FERNANDO
(With a sneer)
Shall we unload the women from the ships, Governor?

GOV. WHITE
First, we must remove the dead.

Borden and Colonist take body off into rear of opening

"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 27.

GOV. WHITE (CONT'D)

Later, we will inter the broken body decently.
(To the assembled men)
We have arrived too late to aid those brave men who held this fort in the Queen’s
name. But, thankful still we are to Almighty God that He, in his kindness, has
brought us safely to our new home.

Father Martin pushes down several loose timbers in the

chapel and faces the altar Borden and Colonist return. Gov.
White and Colonists remove hats and kneel as Father
Martin raises his hands in prayer.

FATHER MARTIN
Almighty God, our Father, we thank Thee for Thy mercy and compassion upon us.
( (Still in prayer, he turns to face the assembly)
Yea, in Thy great wisdom Thou has seen fit to bring us safely to this haven --

Indians, led by Wanchese, enter from Right Shelter and take

positions along ramp. The Colonists raise their guns and
prepare to defend themselves. White moves quickly among
them, pushing aside their weapons as he moves towards
Wanchese. Manteo maneuvers himself so that he remains
next to Gov. White

FATHER MARTIN (CONT'D)

And in the thanksgiving of this hour, let us remember, in sorrow, these, your
servants, who perished here before -- a sacrifice that we, the living, might continue
in their stead. In the name of Almighty God. Amen!

MEN
Amen!

The men rise and replace their hats. They suddenly see
Wanchese and the Indians. They raise their weapons.

GOV.WHITE
And in the spirit of this prayer, I command you to go in peace amongst your
enemies. Let there be NO efforts for revenge against the Indians! I counsel ye!
Make no untoward move against them!
(Now, facing Wanchese)
What do you wish, Wanchese?

WANCHESE
White men must GO! Leave our land NOW!

ANANIAS DARE
(Drawing his sword and stepping towards the Indians)
Disperse at once! We order it in the Queen’s name and Sir Walter ...

An Indian brave steps forward and sticks his spear toward

Dare’s throat. Dare freezes mid-sentence.

OLD TOM
(Stepping forward and raising his blunderbuss)
Get outta here, you knavish rogue! Scat!

Indians raise their spears and bows. Old Tom falls out in a
dead faint.. The Colonists raise their weapons in response.

GOV.WHITE
Ground arms, men! Ground them!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 28.

The Colonists lower their weapons

WANCHESE
White men must GO! Leave our land!

OLD TOM
(Sitting up)
Wonderful idea!

He scrambles back toward the Chapel.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

I really must be going. Goodbye one and all! Weigh anchor!

Old Tom jumps up and runs to hide behind the rest of the
men.

GOV.WHITE
Come now. This is our land now too. We swore eternal friendship to Her Majesty,
the Queen, Chief Manteo, here, and you.

WANCHESE
Chief Manteo is SNAKE!

Manteo advances toward Wanchese, but is stopped by

Borden. The Colonists and Indians raise their weapons once
more

GOV.WHITE
(To the Indians)
We are brothers!
(To his own men)
Put down your weapons!

ANANIAS DARE
(To his men)
Ground arms, men! Ground ‘em!

WANCHESE
Wanchese has no brother. Wanchese brother was Wingina. White men killed!
Wanchese will never forget.
(To Gov. White)
I know you, great father. I traveled on your wooden ship across the great water. I
lived among your people for many moons. I speak your tongue. Your heart is good.
But you are one among many. Your heart is not the heart of your people. They
speak with false smiles and take what they want. And now they want our land ...
our home. No! There is no longer peace between us.
(Pointing to sky)
When moon comes big again, you and your people must be gone! If not?

Wanchese hurls spear at feet of Gov. White. All Indians exit

up Right Ramp into trees and shelter.

OLD TOM
What time will we be sailing back to England?

GOV.WHITE
An idle threat. What are your thoughts, Chief Manteo?
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 29.

MANTEO
Wanchese speaks in anger, great father ... not without cause. But a spoken promise
lives even when our bodies have gone to be forever with the Great Spirit.
Wanchese has forgotten Wingina’s spoken promise to live in peace with the white
man. My people are still your brothers, great father ... and we will make a
great fight with Wanchese.
(Pulling spear from ground)
We will KILL him! KILL HIM!

(Breaks spear over his knee and tosses it away. Manteo and
his family then rush off via the Stage Left Ramp

GOV.WHITE
What do YOU advise, Simon Fernando?

SIMON FERNANDO
I ADVISE ... NOTHING.

An angry response from the men.

SIMON FERNANDO
I am a pilot. I brought you safely across the sea. Unload my ships and I will sail
again for England.

Fernando crosses and sits on edge of lower Right Side

Stage, with his back against the proscenium wall.

GOV.WHITE
Soldiers, men! It is set down in our Articles Of Government that we hear opinions
from you all. Shall we abide here, or sail on and plant a new colony on the
Chesapeake? What say YOU, Master Dare?

ANANIAS DARE
There are ... arguments on both sides, Sir.

GOV.WHITE
G-o-o-d.

GOV.WHITE (CONT'D)
(Turning to Borden)
Soldier Borden?

JOHN BORDEN
First, I stand ready to swear, as ever, that Simon Fernando is no friend of this
colony.

GOV.WHITE
Now, now, John Borden ...

JOHN BORDEN
Or was it someone else who deserted our fly boat in the Bay of Portugal?

SIMON FERNANDO
Proof! PROOF, I challenge you!

ELEANOR
(Entering from Right Wing, accompanied by First Soldier, Dame
Coleman, and three Colonists)
Proof or not, it’s TRUE!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 30.

GOV.WHITE ANANIAS DARE

My child! We left you resting in the boat. Dear wife!

ELEANOR
Think you I’d remain there, quietly waiting?
(Indicating the women with her)
See? I am well attended. Now, what is this quarrel with Fernando?

JOHN BORDEN
He refuses to carry us farther north.

ELEANOR
And why?

JOHN BORDEN
He wants us to remain here to be destroyed as others have been before us.
(To Fernando)
You threaten to sail for England? Why not to your true homeland? SPAIN!

With an angry bellow, Fernando draws his sword to attack

Borden, but Captain Dare steps in and there is a brief sword
fight between Dare and Fernando. The finally men aim their
weapons at Fernando.

GOV.WHITE
That’s enough!

Borden walks silently over to Fernando and stares him in

the eye. Suddenly with one swift move, he knocks Fernando
unconscious with the butt of his rifle. Fernando falls to the
ground. Borden then turns to the rest of the assembly.

JOHN BORDEN
(To the rest of the assembly)
Listen to me! Fernando fears any new settlement on the deep waters of the
Chesapeake as a threat to Spain. Well, let him fear! I say THIS is the better site.
There we would have to start a new settlement with shelter and fields to be made.
Here, we have them already. There, we would be at the mercy of the Spanish
pirates and their big ships. Here, the shallow sounds protect us. Let us DARE
Simon Fernando and remain HERE!

ELEANOR
Well spoken, John Borden!

COLONISTS
Aye, John Borden!
We agree!
Well said, John!

GOV.WHITE
That it is! Well spoken indeed! Mount the guard!

Fernando exits brusquely through the Right Wing. Borden

takes flag and mounts Right Parapet with it.

ANANIAS DARE
Sergeant Howe! Keep a watchful eye. But NO display of firearms, we commAnd
you.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 31.

OLD TOM
(Calling in direction of Right Ramp)
Wanchese - you Old Beelzebub! Just show one of your devil horns and I’ll shoot it
clean off ya!
(Taking his hat off to Eleanor)
That I will, Mistress Eleanor. This be OUR country now. And we be ready to
defend it ‘til Gabriel blows his judgment horn!

Borden places flag in holder on SR Parapet

ELEANOR
(Pointing joyfully)
The flag! The FLAG! Three cheers for our new home, VIRGINIA!

OLD TOM
Three cheers! Hip-hip!

COLONISTS
Hooray!

OLD TOM
Hip-hip!

COLONISTS
Hooray!

OLD TOM
Hip-hip!

COLONISTS
HOORAY!

ELEANOR
And may this flag never fall except as we fall first! Long live Virgin-i-a!

The assembly cheers

GOV.WHITE
Unload the ships!

SCENE 4 - A NEW COLONY

Props and furnishings are brought onstage - and wreckage
of the fort is carried off as staged and choreographed
during singing of “Sir Walter Raleigh’s Ships”

CHORUS
SIR WALTER RALEIGH’S SHIP WENT A-SAILING ON THE SEA,
AND HER NAME IT WAS THE NAME OF THE GOLDEN TRIN-I-TEE
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE ONE AND THE LONESOME LOW
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE LONESOME SEA.
THERE WAS ANOTHER SHIP WENT A’SAILING ON THE SEA,
AND HER NAME IT WAS THE NAME OF THE SPANISH ROBBEREE;
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE LONE AND THE LONESOME LOW,
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE LONESOME SEA.
TEN THOUSAND POUNDS IN GOLD SHALL BE GIVEN UNTO THEE;
AND UNTO MY DAUGHTER FAIR LIKEWISE WEDDED YOU SHALL BE -
IF YOU SINK HER IN THE ONE AND THE LONESOME LOW,
IF YOU SINK HER IN THE LONESOME SEA.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 32.

Singing fades out as STORYTELLER enters from Right

Wing, stands on Right Front Stage

STORYTELLER
Buildings were repaired, the fields plowed again, roads were cleared,
And in a few days, Fort Raleigh looked like a thriving permanent settlement.

STORYTELLER exits up Right Ramp During the singing of

ADAM LAY Y-BOUNDEN,” Eleanor and Dame Coleman
cross and exit through opening beside Left Cabin. John
Borden and workmen exit up Left Ramp singing first verse
of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Ships. Girls come onstage from Left
Wing carrying large fishnet. Joyce Archard takes place at
spinning wheel and Elizabeth Glane operates meal grinder.

CHORUS
ADAM LAY Y-BOUNDEN,
BOUNDEN IN A BOND,
FOUR THOUSAND WINTERS
THOUGHT HE NOT TOO LONG --
AND ALL WAS FOR AN APPLE --
AN APPLE THAT HE TOOK --
AS CLARKES FINDEN
WRITTEN IN THEIR BOOK.
NE HAD THE APPLE TAKEN, BEEN
THE APPLE TAKEN BEEN;
NEVER HAD OUR LADY
A BEEN HEAVEN’S QUEEN;
SO BLESSED BE THE TIME --
THAT APPLE TAKES WAS --
THEREFORE WE MOURN SINGEN,
DEO GRACIAS!

John Borden an four other men march out from the SL wing
and up the SL ramp, singing:

MEN
SIR WALTER RALEIGH’S SHIP WENT A-SAILING ON THE SEA,
AND HER NAME IT WAS THE NAME OF THE GOLDEN TRIN-I-TEE
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE ONE AND THE LONESOME LOW
AS SHE SAILED UPON THE LONESOME SEA.

SCENE 5 - FISH NET SCENE

The fishnet is spread out and the women takes their assigned
places to mend the net during the following scene. Dare,
White and Father Martin take places on steps in front of
cabin where Eleanor and Dame Coleman have exited.

Dame Coleman enters from Eleanor’s Cabin, wiping her

brow

JOYCE ARCHARD
How fares it with Mistress Dare, Dame Coleman? Is everything well?

DAME COLEMAN
Is everything well? You’d think never had a babe been born into the world before!
Lah, but then it’s Mistress Dare who is the mother, and sure she is greater than the
Virgin Mary!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 33.

JANE JONES
Oh! You shouldn’t talk so.

DAME COLEMAN
No? Wait ‘til you hear me really talk! And if they don’t get some of the crowd
away from my door I’ll begin. There he sits, anxious Grandfather, ready to paint
the portrait the minute the wee girl comes into the world.

ELIZABETH GLANE
Girl? But we are praying it will be a boy.

DAME COLEMAN
Oh, please. We need another man on this island like a fish needs a canoe. Can’t
abide ‘em anyway. Never have.

MARGARET LAWRENCE
But, without men, your job would be lost.

DAME COLEMAN
In that case, I would just mend fish nets with you. And by the way, won’t you tell
me why all these men don’t catch any fish with all them mighty nets you’re
mending?

JOYCE ARCHARD
Because Wanchese’s tribe have possession of the fishing grounds, that’s why.

DAME COLEMAN
And why haven’t WE got possession of the fishing grounds?

JOYCE ARCHARD
There’s to be no bloodshed. The Governor’s orders ...

ALICE CHAPMAN
And wise ones, too!

ALL
True!
Aye!
That’s the truth.

DAME COLEMAN
They’re all cowards. Only one man among ‘em -- John Borden. Without him and
the help of Manteo, God bless that savage, this colony wouldn’t last six months.

Dame Coleman starts to exit Left as Old Tom enters with

two buckets of water sung from a yoke over his shoulders

DAME COLEMAN (CONT'D)

Well, THERE you are!

OLD TOM
And there YOU are!

JOHN BORDEN
(Calling from offstage)
Water! Water!

OLD TOM
(Calling)
Right away, Captain Borden!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 34.

The women giggle at Old Tom

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Laugh! Laugh! Here I am, a beast of burden, and all my valor perished in my feet!

Dame gets water from one of Tom’s buckets and then exits
through opening beside Left Cabin . Agona enters from Left
Wing and pads along behind Tom. The girls giggle

Spying Agona, Old Tom sets the water bucket yoke down in
the sand)

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Leave me in peace, will you? Be scarce and get GONE!

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

(To the women - who are still laughing)
Funny, ain’t it!

JOYCE ARCHARD
It’s your lady-love we’re laughing at, Tom, not you. Oh, but she’s faithful.

OLD TOM
Aye. Ever since th’ day she heard me singin’ down by the creek, I won her savage
heart away.
(Screaming at Agona)
SCAT!

Agona grabs Tom and embraces him

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

You old sow! Ugh! She’s all anointed with bear grease again. Love ointment to her
people!

JOYCE ARCHARD
You should be proud to be so sought for, Tom.

OLD TOM
Ah, Lordy, what a wonder is this! Here, I went some forty odd years in England
without so much as a glimpse of a woman’s sweet favor. And NOW I’m favored to
undoing! Me, a lady’s man and nothin’ but a water- carrier to th’ fields.

JOYCE ARCHARD

How is the work going there?

OLD TOM
Worse and worse.

WOMEN
(Alarmed)
What?

OLD TOM
Which is to say more and more. That John Borden is a demon for labor. Th’ men
all growl and grumble, but he just laughs and sings.

JOHN BORDEN (OFFSTAGE)

WATER! WATER!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 35.

OLD TOM
(Calling back)
Comin’! Comin’!
(Moving to pick up water buckets again)
Well, when th’ wells of the world run dry, then I shall rest.

Old Tom picks up the buckets, but Agona slips up behind

him and helps lift them. When Tom realizes that the buckets
feel unusually light, he turns and sees that Agona is holding
them.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Let go!

Agona lets go of the buckets. When they drop, the weight of

the buckets makes Tom fall to his knees ... spilling some of
the water. Tom recovers balance and advances menacingly
on Agona

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Get out! Trot! Run! MARCH!

JOHN BORDEN
(From offstage)
Water!

OLD TOM
Comin’, Master Borden! Comin’!

Old Tom dashes up Left Ramp, turns and sees Agona behind
him, and starts running faster. They both exit through the
trees on the Left Side Stage

Children enter from SL.

BOY
Look, Mother, at the fish we ketched! Manteo showed us where to find them.

GIRL
And here are some flowers for the baby. Has God sent it yet?

JOYCE ARCHARD
God is sending the baby now.

BOY
But He ‘s so slow!

JOYCE ARCHARD
You children run along with Dame Powell. They’re waiting with the catechism.

BOY
But I thought we wouldn’t have school today.

JOYCE ARCHARD
Run along. And give the fish to the cooks!

ELIZABETH GLANE
Here, I’ll take them.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 36.

The children exit with Elizabeth Glane and Alice Chapman

through Left Wing. John Borden and three Colonists enter
down Left Ramp

JOHN BORDEN
Is the net finished?

JOYCE ARCHARD
It will do.

Manteo, his wife and son, Wano, enter down Right Ramp

JOHN BORDEN
Good.
(To the women)
Take the net down to the boat. Tony Cage swears to a great run of fish around the
point.

The women gather the net and exit SR into wing.

JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)

(To Joyce Archard)
And Mistress Dare; is it well with her?

JOYCE ARCHARD
Aye. Once more, all is well.

JOHN BORDEN
(Walking over to Manteo)
Greetings, Manteo!

MANTEO
Greetings to you, my friend.

JOHN BORDEN
Any news of Wanchese?

MANTEO
He still hides in the forest.

JOHN BORDEN
HE may, but his MEN don’t. Again last night, they raided our fields, tore up our
nets, and tried to fire Master Dutton’s house.

MANTEO
Too many of your men go out alone. They must go together. I will speak with
Governor White.

Old Tom runs on from entrance beside Eleanor’s Cabin. He

rushes over to the bell and begins to ring it excitedly

OLD TOM
Hear ye! Hear ye one and all! Assemble! Assemble!

Tom stops ringing the bell once everyone has gathered. The
crowd grows silent with anticipation

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

On this, the eighteenth day of August, fifteen hundred and eighty-seven ...
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 37.

COLONISTS
Yes?

OLD TOM
To our beloved Mistress Eleanor Dare ...

COLONISTS
YES?

OLD TOM
There is born ...

COLONISTS
WHAT?

OLD TOM
A DAUGHTER!

The crowd cheers and hugs each other. Father Martin

crosses to the top of the steps in front of the chapel and the
crowd falls silent again

FATHER MARTIN
O Lord, save this woman, Thy servant.

COLONISTS
Who puts her trust in Thee.

FATHER MARTIN
Be Thou to her a strong tower.

COLONISTS
From the face of her enemy.

FATHER MARTIN
Lord, hear our prayer.

COLONISTS
And let our cry come unto Thee.

Father Martin turns and leads the crowd into the chapel.
STORYTELLER enters Right Wing and slowly crosses as he
speaks, to exit Left Wing

SCENE 7 - CHRISTENING
STORYTELLER
A day later, three settlers were ambushed and killed by Wanchese and his men.
Governor White set a price on the head of Wanchese, and made Manteo lord of all
the surrounding country and subject unto him, Sir Walter Raleigh and the Queen.
On the 20th, the new baby was christened.

The crowd sings the first verse of the song facing the altar.

COLONISTS
WITH THANKFUL HEARTS, O GENTLE LORD,
WE BOW TO THEE IN ONE ACCORD,
OBEDIENT TO THY KIND DECREE,
“LET LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME.”
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 38.

As second verse begins, crowd turns around and exits

chapel, forming V-shaped lines from the chapel to the green.
Inside the chapel are Agona, Old Tom, Simon Fernando,
Ananias Dare. Gov. White, Dame Coleman, Father Martin,
Joyce Archard and John Borden. Father Martin holds the
baby behind baptismal font.

CROWD
ONCE LONG AGO OUR SAVIOUR’S WORD
THE CHILDREN OF JUDEA HEARD,
SOFT ANSWER TO THEIR LOWLY PLEA -
“COME, LITTLE CHILDREN, COME TO ME.”
AMEN.

FATHER MARTIN
Dearly Beloved, inasmuch as our Heavenly Father has seen fit to bless us with this
child, thereby sending us a token of his favor, and marking this settlement with the
sign of permanence, we do return thanks for His bounty and mercy. Conscious we
are of this great event -- to be marked and set down in history for all time to come.
This, the first English child to be born in the new world. And here, God willing,
we will begin a new nation. And now, the godparents, chosen of the church, name
this child ...

JOYCE ARCHARD
Virginia!

JOHN BORDEN
In honor of this our country!

FATHER MARTIN
I baptize thee, Virginia, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy
Ghost. Amen.

COLONISTS
Amen!

FATHER MARTIN
The Lord be with you!

COLONISTS
And with thy Spirit!

CHRISTENING DANCE - AS
CHOREOGRAPHED
GOV.WHITE
Friends! This is a happy day for us all. It marks the permanent beginning of
English colonization in the New World. Blest of God and His holy church, our
colony will, for this day forth, go on to a greater destiny. The hour has come at last
when I must sail again to England. But, I go happily in the knowledge that I leave
behind me here, a strong and contented settlement. And so, by your vote duly
recorded in the book of colony affairs, I do hereby declare that this City of Raleigh
and the lands adjacent thereto, are placed under the joint rule of Captain Dare,
Eleanor Dare, and John Borden, Captain!

The Colonists cheer.

JOHN BORDEN
With you away, Sir, we will be true to our trust. We have planted our flag on the
edge of this New World, and here - working together for the cause we believe in -
we will not fail.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 39.

Cheers and applause from the Colonists. Indians sneak into

hiding places in bushes along Left Ramp and along Right
Side Stage. Other Indians leap quietly over parapet. One
Indians stabs guard on Right Parapet and drops into Right
Cabin without crowd seeing him.

GOV.WHITE
And now - farewell! Before the coming of Christmas, you shall see us again with
several shiploads of provisions, other men and women and children, our neighbors,
to add to our number. And perhaps this time the Queen will relent, and Sir Walter
himself will accompany me back! God be with you!

OLD TOM
God bless you, Governor White!

More cheers from the crowd.

White hands sword to Borden and exits with two Red

Guards into Right Wing. Soloist begins THE LORD’S
PRAYER.

SOLOIST
OUR FATHER, WHICH ART IN HEAVEN,

CHOIR

HALLOWED BE THY NAME.

THY KINGDOM COME.
THY WILL BE DONE IN EARTH,
AS IT IS IN HEAVEN.
GIVE US THIS DAY OUR DAILY BREAD.
AND FORGIVE US OUR DEBTS,
AS WE FORGIVE OUR DEBTORS.
AND LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION,
BUT DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
A-MEN.

Father Martin stands on the steps of the chapel. The crowd

moves to Center Stage facing Father Martin. As the song
progresses, the masts of the ship can be seen passing from
Stage L to Stage R. On the final note of the prayer, a single
arrow shot by an Indian on the SR side stage hits a Colonist
man in the back. He falls.

COLONIST MAN
Merciful God! Indians!

INDIAN ATTACK - AS STAGED &

CHOREOGRAPHED

SCENE 8 - QUEEN’S CHAMBER

While Manteo and Wanchese are engaged in tumbling fight,
Ananias Dare stabs Wanchese and starts towards Eleanor
who is in the chapel. An Indian appears on SL Side Stage
and shoots an arrow, hitting Ananias in the back. He falls at
Eleanor’s feet.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 40.

She stoops and cradles him in her arms AS THE LIGHTS

FADE, the STORYTELLER enters from Left Shelter and
speaks from top of Left Ramp.

The STORYTELLER is revealed by spot on Right Parapet

after Indian attack scene. After speech he exits down steps
behind Right Cabin

STORYTELLER
The Indians were driven off in defeat, but at a tragic loss -- for Manteo, himself,
was badly wounded, and along with Captain Dare, several colonists were killed.
To make matters worse, John White’s voyage home was beset by heavy storms. It
was November 5, 1587, before he even reached England; and by the time he had
secured ships and supplies for the colonists, in the spring of 1588, all thoughts of
colony or empire across the sea had dropped from the queen’s intent.

As lights rise on Left Side Stage, the throne is revealed. Two

guards stand on either side of the throne. The Queen enters,
followed by Governor White, Sir Walter Raleigh, and two
other guards.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Roanoke, Roanoke, Roanoke! How many times must I tell you no? No, NO, I say
again!

GOV.WHITE
But, your Majesty ...

QUEEN ELIZABETH
This Raleigh will have the very heart out of me with his colony. Night and day he
pursues me, sends messages to my door, haunts me in my dreams with “Roanoke,
Roanoke! My people are perishing in yonder world!” ‘Fore God in Heaven, I
should clap him in a dungeon and hush his clamor. And that I will. I will, if he
persists.

GOV.WHITE
Patience with us, dear Queen.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Dear Queen! Ha! That it might ever be so with you all. And he knows I cannot
spare him for a prison, not while Philip threatens me. No, that I cannot. And so he
presumes upon me. Speak. Speak, will you!

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

If I may.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
“If I may.” Always that knife of courtesy to cut my kindness in two, you ... you ... I
shall never understand you.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

It is but a simple thing I request, your Majesty, to save my colony in Virginia.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Simple? Hah! Like the breaking of a neck! And do you think I’ll risk my country’s
neck by allowing you to leave England?

The Queen turns to sit on throne. Sir Walter takes her arm to
prevent her going. Elizabeth wheels around and slaps him
across his face. Raleigh angrily turns to exit
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 41.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

I warn you! Guards!

The two guards cross their halberds, preventing Raleigh

from leaving.

GOV.WHITE
Pray, your Majesty ...

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Queen, Queen! Majesty, Majesty! You’d think I’m but a scullery maid to cleanse
the kitchens of my people for all you hearken to me.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Your Majesty, I must give over to your wish. I do not go to Roanoke. So be it.
(Kneeling)
But I beg you to listen to my pleading.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
There was a phrase I used once ... Aye, you proud and strange and dreaming man.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Out of your great right, pray call me what you will. But no one less than a queen
would doubt my loyalty to England.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Nor does your Queen doubt it, Sir Walter. What is your request?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I have, through several devious ways, arranged for funds ... to purchase two small
ships.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
And you would send them to your colony?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

At once ... with provisions! God only knows how it stands with them there.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
You know my orders of these several months?

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

I do. No ships may leave these shores.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Yes.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

But then I begged a fleet of ships before. And these are only two ... and small at
that. They COULD be spared ... with Master White.

GOV.WHITE
(Kneeling )
Your Majesty. My daughter ... her baby ... day and night they call to me in my
dreams. I cannot endure it.
(Kneeling)
I beg you. Please. Let me go to them!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 42.

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Rise, Master White.
(Beat)
Rise.

White stands.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

There is an old saying taught to me by my nurse -- “A little thread can often save
the rope from breaking.” Perhaps these tiny ships might be the holding strand
against the King of Spain.
(Beat)
But ... I consent.

White kisses the Queen’s hand. Raleigh bows.

GOV. WHITE SIR WALTER RALEIGH

Your Holy Grace! Your Majesty!

QUEEN ELIZABETH
Yet ... if Philip attack us and we lose ... then for this tiny thread ... these little ships
that might have turned the tide ... Sir Walter shall pay forfeit ... with his head.

Raleigh bows again. The Queen starts to exit when she is

met by a messenger who bows and delivers a letter. She
reads it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

It seems that destiny has made the choice. Between my England and your Virginia,
it favors me.

She hands letter to Gov. White and he and Raleigh read it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH (CONT'D)

Would God it did not in such a tragic way as this. In this hour, no ships shall leave
England, large or small. For by the sea, we live. To lose it is to perish. Gentlemen,
as you can see, a Spanish armada is set to sail against us. And now, to arms. God
save us!

Raleigh & White bow and the Queen exits - followed by her
guards.

GOV.WHITE
This means the end of the colony. It will die.

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

As many of us shall ... that England may live.

The STORYTELLER enters from Left Shelter, crosses in

front of Gov. White and makes his speech as he crosses
down Left Ramp.

SCENE 9 - CHRISTMAS
Sound of Armada battle rises, then fades away.

Spotlight picks up Storyteller on SL parapet.

STORYTELLER
And so all resources of England were kept for defense against Spain. The
government of the colony now rested upon Eleanor Dare and John Borden.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 43.
STORYTELLER (CONT'D)
With unflagging spirits they strove to supply food, keep up the morale of the
settlers, take care of the ailing and bury the dead. The Colonists tried to wait with
hopeful hearts, as they continued their bitter struggle against the encircling
Indians. And ever they looked now, with anxious eyes, across the stretch of endless
sea. Every day the whisper ran, “Food will come by Christmas. Surely by
Christmas Sir Walter will send his ships.”
(Beat)
Christmas came.

Lights rise on Eleanor seated on Right Steps, in front of her

cabin, singing a lullaby to her baby. Father Martin is on his
bed in Left Cabin.

Women enter with lanterns and greenery. They quietly

decorate the chapel during the lullaby. Once the chapel is
decorated, the women filter offstage ... except for one or two
who will later assist Eleanor with Father Martin.

ELEANOR
JESUS ONCE AN INFANT SMALL,
CRADLED IN THE OXEN’S STALL,
THOUGH THE LORD AND GOD OF ALL --
HEAR US, HOLY JESUS.

During the next verse, Father Martin manages to get out of

bed and struggle to the SL edge of the chapel.
ONCE A CHILD SO GOOD AND FAIR,
FEELING WANT AND TOIL AND CARE,
ALL THAT WE MAY HAVE TO BEAR --
HEAR US, HOLY JESUS.

FATHER MARTIN
Eleanor? Eleanor?

ELEANOR
(Rushing to him)
Father Martin! Please. You’re not well. Come back to bed. Let me help you.

One of the women rushes to the pot and grabs a ladle of

soup. She then carries it to Eleanor who feeds it to Father
Martin.

FATHER MARTIN
Thank you, my child.

ELEANOR
You are still much too weak to be up.

Eleanor helps Father Martin to his bed. Woman hands the

soup ladle to Eleanor.

ELEANOR (CONT'D)
Please drink this, Father. You’ll feel better

FATHER MARTIN
Any news from John Borden?

ELEANOR
He will be here soon now ... soon. It’s a long way from Hatorask.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 44.

FATHER MARTIN
Oh, Eleanor! I fear we shall never thrive here. I think perhaps we should seek
another settlement ...

ELEANOR
We must abide here. The Indians no longer molest us, and sixty of us still remain
alive. We have our houses, and in April we will plant crops.

FATHER MARTIN
And you will stay with John Borden?

ELEANOR
I will.

FATHER MARTIN
And in the Spring, you will be wed.

ELEANOR
Yes, Father. In the Spring.

FATHER MARTIN
God’s blessings on you two, my child, and on us all.

ELEANOR
Amen.
(Beat)
Sleep now, Father. Sleep.

Eleanor walks back towards the fire.

Old Tom enters from SR carrying his rifle. Agona follows

carrying a huge stack of firewood. They stop at the fire as
Eleanor approaches

OLD TOM
Sweet my love, unload!

Agona drops her wood bundle and kneels to stoke the fire
under the pot. Eleanor crosses to Upper Right of pot.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

I am the most fortunate of men. An ox could carry no more!
(To Eleanor)
How is his Reverence doing, Mistress Dare?

ELEANOR
He is sleeping now.

OLD TOM
Good. Good! I have a bit of business with him when he’s feeling better.

ELEANOR
Business?

OLD TOM
Yes indeed!
((Punching Agona’s backside with his foot) )
Her and me.
(Noticing Eleanor’s baffled reaction)
Well, I’ve been sleepin’ colder nights lately. And it’s cold out here too. Stir up,
Agona, stir up!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 45.

ELEANOR
Agona?

OLD TOM
Oh, yes. I have lately christened her Agona, which is to say in the Indian tongue,
“AGONY.”

ELEANOR
(Laughing softly)
Oh, Tom!

Eleanor turns and heads toward the chapel.

OLD TOM
(Following Eleanor)
Oh! We have four more berry candles for the altar. Agona made ‘em!

ELEANOR
Thank you ... A-go-na.

AGONA
Tee-Hee!

SCENE 10 - BORDEN RETURNS

Tom goes to Chapel to help Eleanor. Suddenly, the Sentinel
on parapet bangs butt of his rifle against stockade wall.

SENTINEL
I cannot! I cannot! Merciful God!

Sentinel throws gun onto Stage and climbs down ladder and
runs into Chapel. Colonists begin to trickle onto the stage -
roused from their sleep by the commotion.

SENTINEL (CONT'D)
Merciful God, Save us! Save us! Save us, or we perish!

ELEANOR
Hush, for shame! You’ll frighten the children.

SENTINEL ELEANOR (CONT'D)

Oh God, have mercy upon us! Stop it. Do you hear me? Stop it!

Eleanor slaps Sentinel and he falls on his knees, weeping.

COLONISTS
(Entering in confusion)
News? News!
Have the ships come?
Are we under attack?
The ships! The ships have come!

The clamor from the crowd grows and grows. Eleanor tries,
but cannot calm them. Suddenly, John Borden appears on
Side Stage Left. He comes down Ramp, pauses.

JOHN BORDEN
Silence!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 46.

Borden fires his gun into the air. The crowd is instantly
silent.

JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)

(Tossing his gun at the Sentinel)
Back to your post!

SENTINEL
I cannot. I cannot! Ten hours I have stood the watch. Ten hours, and I am perished
with cold.

JOHN BORDEN
Take him to his bed.

The women take the Sentinel out Right Wing. The crowd
begins to surge again around Borden

COLONISTS
What news, Master Borden?
Yes! Tell us!
What news?

JOHN BORDEN
Friends! There is news, but it must wait.

COLONISTS
Wait? Wait?
What do you mean?
No! Tell us now.
Speak! We have a right to know.

JOHN BORDEN
I command you to your cabins! Get yourselves rest, and tomorrow the Council will
be called.

COLONISTS
Tomorrow?
We can’t wait until tomorrow!
We have a right to know now!
Down with John Borden!
We’ve suffered enough! Speak NOW!

Father Martin staggers out of his cabin. The crowd grows

silent when they see him.

FATHER MARTIN
Blessings, my children!

COLONISTS
Father Martin! He is well again!
Bless you, Father!
Thank God! Thank God!

FATHER MARTIN
I have had a sign from God. His words came to me ... a voice speaking ... saying
“Fear not. All will be well.” Go now, and sleep. Please. Go. Go to your beds.

The crowd slowly disperses and exits. Father Martin

collapses and Eleanor and borden help him back to bed,
assisted by Dame Coleman.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 47.

ELEANOR
You must come back to your bed now, Father.

OLD TOM
(To Agona)
And you come to YOUR bed too, old lady!

Old Tom and Agona take bundle of wood from beside pot
and place it by Father Martin’s cabin. Tom and Agona climb
ladder to Left Parapet.

Father Martin sits on his bed and joins hands of Eleanor

and Borden.

FATHER MARTIN
Bless thee, my lad. On thee we rest. In you two - united - the symbol of our
strength, we shall remain secure.

JOHN BORDEN
Good night, Father.

ELEANOR
Sleep now, Father. Good night.

Father Martin lies on bed, tended by Dame Coleman.

Eleanor and Borden cross Downstage to pot

SCENE 11 - JOHN & ELEANOR’S DEDICATION

JOHN BORDEN
He’s very ill.

ELEANOR
Yes. And you. Sit down and rest.

John sits on stool by fire Eleanor hands him the ladle. He

sips from it.

ELANOR
Now ... tell me ... the news is bad?

JOHN BORDEN
Yes. Manteo is dead. The tribe ... what is left of them ... is in despair. Tomorrow,
they begin moving south ... back to their home in Croatoan. The game has fled
away from these islands, food is scarce. A few pitiful bushels of corn they had, no
more. They could spare none, nor potatoes. On Croatoan there will be game.

ELEANOR
If the ships do not come soon ... tomorrow ...

JOHN BORDEN
They won’t come ... not tomorrow or the next day. I know it now.

ELEANOR
How do you know it?

JOHN BORDEN
Rowing the sounds and trampling those endless bogs of salt sea grass, my mind
worked in a turmoil of fever and fret. Why? Why? I kept asking myself ... why has
no sign, no word come from the Governor and Sir Walter.

What could keep them back? And then ... suddenly ... I saw the answer. How, I
know not, but the answer came. England is at war with Spain!

ELEANOR
Of course. That has to be the reason. Why didn’t we think of it sooner?

JOHN BORDEN
England is in peril of her life. And the Queen is keeping back all ships for her
defense.

ELEANOR
And may for months to come. Then we MUST act - now!

JOHN BORDEN
And what would you do?

ELEANOR
We have supplies in the storehouse to last two days at most. If there IS game
farther south, then we must FIND it!

JOHN BORDEN
And desert the fort?

Eleanor gently takes John’s hand in hers.

ELEANOR
Only if YOU wish it.

JOHN BORDEN
If I wish it. So, we finally agree ... we two, standing here tonight upon the outpost
of the world ... the last survivors ... keepers of a dream.

ELEANOR
And we’ll keep that dream ...

JOHN BORDEN
... to the end. And we’ll fight on here ... until this wilderness is won.

ELEANOR
And we WILL win!

JOHN BORDEN
Even if we die, we win. So it is with all people everywhere who would be free. I
remember Sir Walter once said ... “The victory lies in the struggle, not the city
won.”

ELEANOR
He knew. Out of his suffering, he knew.

JOHN BORDEN
And so we know ... tonight ... we know.

ELEANOR
Yes.

JOHN BORDEN
Take my hand then ... for you have always had my heart.

ELEANOR
(Beat)
Oh, John. I do love you so much.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 49.

John & Eleanor embrace & kiss

JOHN BORDEN
Come now. You must rest.

Borden, his arm around her shoulder, leads Eleanor into her
cabin.

SCENE 12 - PARAPET SCENE

Agona is sleeping on the Left Parapet. Old Tom, who is
standing guard, crosses to her.

OLD TOM
(Singing)
O ONCE I WAS COURTED BY A LADY OF COLOR,
SHE LOVED ME I VOW AND PROTEST;
SHE LOVED ME SO WELL, AND SO VERY WELL
THAT I BUILT ME A BOW’R IN HER BREAST,
IN HER BREAST - THAT I BUILD ME A BOW’R
IN HER BREAST.

Old Tom takes off his coat and covers Agona with it.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Snore on, me Honey. You have won me manly heart away!
(Singing)
OH, UP ON THE MOUNTAIN AND DOWN IN THE VALLEY
I SHOUT THE GLAD NEWS ALL AROUND.
SING HIGH-HO, ME SWEET. SING HOO-EE, ME LOVE!
AND DARKLING IN BEAUTY I’M BOUND, I’M BOUND.
IN THE FETTERS OF LOVE I AM BOUND!

Borden comes out of Eleanor’s cabin and picks up his gun.

He starts toward Left Parapet.

JOHN BORDEN
Come down from there, Tom. It’s my watch.

OLD TOM
You’re dead on your feet, John Borden, and here am I all in the height of a great
fervor. Besides ... Agona snores like a hundred horns in Bedlam. I CAN’T sleep!

JOHN BORDEN
Can’t sleep? Say you can’t sleep?

OLD TOM
But YOU can. And while I walk this post with me instrument of vengeance, you’re
all as safe as Peter’s rock. So, lie down. Lie down, young man, and ease your
weary bones.

Borden crosses to pot, sets gun down and lies down to sleep.

JOHN BORDEN
With men like you, Tom, we’ll win this fight.

OLD TOM
Oh, I’m your man, Cap’n Borden, small and pitiful-like though I be.

JOHN BORDEN
Thank you, Tom, thank you. You will be remembered!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 50.

OLD TOM
I will be remembered.
(Beat)
I hope not.
(Indicating the Roanoke Sound and beyond)
There. There in England, all remembered me. Aye, with kicks and curses and a
terrible usage of tongues they did. And deep I drowned me sorrows in the mug.
But here ... here where there is no remembrance, I who was lately nothin’ am
become somebody. A man of parts in the wilderness and of stern responsibility. For
item -- have I not now the keeping of some sixty souls in me care? I ... who could
never care for me own.

Choral background from Offstage begins

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

Verily, Tom, I hardly know thee in thy greatness. Roanoke. O Roanoke! Thou hast
made a man ... of me.

The choral background concludes as Tom shoulders his gun

once more and strolls the parapet.

SCENE 13 - FINAL ASSEMBLY

RUNNER
(From offstage)
Captain Borden!

OLD TOM
Who goes there? Halt in the Queen’s name!

RUNNER
(Entering)
Captain Borden!

OLD TOM
(Indicating Borden)
Hush your yowling and let him sleep!

RUNNER
(Kneeling by Borden)
Captain Borden!

JOHN BORDEN
(Groggily)
What is it?

RUNNER
Rouse the people! To arms! A Spanish ship has anchored at the bar!

JOHN BORDEN
Are you certain?

RUNNER
They bespoke me in their broken tongue!

JOHN BORDEN
Simon Fernando has betrayed us!

RUNNER
I don’t know. A party came ashore. They sent us terms. Surrender peaceful, we
will be protected ... and fed!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 51.

OLD TOM
We’ll NOT surrender! We’ll fight to the last man, Captain Borden!

JOHN BORDEN
Aye, Tom, that we will!

RUNNER
If we resist, we’re to be killed ... to the last man, woman and child! Captain
Borden! They will murder us! They WILL!

Runner grabs Borden by the arms. Borden throws Runner

down and rushes to the step of the Chapel. Old Tom rushes
to the bell and starts ringing it.

JOHN BORDEN
Rouse the people, Tom! We’ve no time to lose!

OLD TOM
Assemble, assemble! Everybody assemble!

The Colonists rush onstage

COLONISTS
What is it?
Have the ships come?
They’ve come at last!
Sir Walter’s ships?
We’re saved!
What news, Captain Borden?

JOHN BORDEN
Silence! Silence!

Borden takes a position at top of steps of the Chapel. The

crowd assembles around him.

JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)

Friends! I fear the hour has come when we must leave the fort.

COLONISTS
What? Leave the fort?
What do you mean?
For what reason, John?
Speak! Speak!

JOHN BORDEN
We must decide the fate of the colony!

COLONIST
The fate of the colony? What do you mean?

JOHN BORDEN
We must Decide whether we leave this fort or whether we stay.

COLONISTS
What do you mean?
Why should we leave?
Why should we leave the fort?
Speak, Captain Borden. Tell us!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 52.

RUNNER
Friends! A Spanish ship is anchored off the bar!

COLONISTS
The Spaniards?
Merciful God!
Are you certain?
A Spanish ship?

RUNNER
Fernando has brought a Man-Of-War to destroy us!

COLONISTS
Simon Fernando?
Heaven protect us!
That can’t be!
The Spaniards? Here?

RUNNER
Tomorrow or the next day, they will reach here and attack us. We are too weak to
stand against them. Too weak!

ELIZABETH GLANE
(In hysterics)
Let us leave this cursed place!

JOYCE ARCHARD
Shame on ye, Elizabeth! Shame!

RUNNER
I tell ye, the Spanish offer us terms. A party awaits our surrender. We have but to
show the white flag!

DAME COLEMAN
Never!

RUNNER
They will spare our lives!

There is a roar of negative protest.

COLONISTS
Let us surrender.
Stay here and we’ll be slaughtered in cold blood!
Surrender! Aye, surrender!
We must think of the women and children!
We MUST leave!

COLONIST
Silence! Silence! Let John speak!

JOHN BORDEN
Let us behave ourselves like soldiers!

OLD TOM
Aye, that we will, Captain Borden!

Old Tom and Agona cross to Stage Right of the crowd.

"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 53.

COLONISTS
Aye!
We’ll follow ye!
Speak, John! We’re behind ye!

JOHN BORDEN
Good. On Croatoan, we’ll start a new settlement.

OLD TOM
A new settlement!

ELEANOR
We’ll begin there again!

JOHN BORDEN
We’ll never yield. We’ll carry on the fight ... on Croatoan ... in the wilderness ...
wherever God sends us ... and to the last man!

RUNNER
The Spanish will FEED us!

The “Negatives” follow the Runner and rush toward the

Stage Right wing. Old Tom suddenly blocks the way, his gun
leveled at the crowd.

OLD TOM
Back! Back!

The crowd stops in their tracks once they see the gun.

OLD TOM (CONT'D)

I will kill the first man tries to pass me!

RUNNER
Then feed us!

COLONIST
It would be the food of slaves!

The sentinel rushes onstage from opening beside Left Cabin,

waving a white sheet tied to a wooden pole.

SENTINEL
Surrender! Surrender!

Dame Coleman wrestles sheet away from Colonist Man

DAME COLEMAN
Use my one bed sheet, you ye? Ye cowardly knave! The times John Borden held
your fevered head and nursed ye back from death!

Dame Coleman angrily tosses sheet to the ground and

wheels around to face the Colonists

DAME COLEMAN (CONT'D)

God in Heaven witness me! Ye shall ALL burn in Hell fire if ye desert us now!

JOHN BORDEN
You shall know all and make your choice. True, the Spaniards ask us to surrender.
True, they will spare our lives. They will feed us. The question is clear.
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 54.
JOHN BORDEN (CONT'D)
Shall it be dishonor and life, or a brave struggle onward ... out there ... even to an
end no man knows?

OLD TOM
We’ll fight!

Mixed reaction from crowd

JOHN BORDEN
I know what it means to make this choice. And I know you will make it and you
will not fail. You will stand firm for the colony!

A more positive reaction from the crowd.

COLONISTS
Aye!
Aye, John Borden!

JOHN BORDEN
As for me, I will die before I surrender. Here in this new world, we have planted
the emblem of our race.
Of free men!

MEN WOMEN
And we’ll be men! And, we’ll BE free!

Borden places his arm around Eleanor.

JOHN BORDEN
And in Sir Walter’s name ... and in the name of her who stands beside me ... let us
swear to be true to ourselves and the trust reposed in us!

COLONISTS
COLONISTS Bless you, Mistress Eleanor!
We’re with ye, John!

John and Eleanor start moving onto the Green as the crowd
follows. Eventually, most of the crowd has formed
themselves on the green behind John & Eleanor.

JOHN BORDEN
By the death of our friends and companions ... and those who lie buried in this
ground ... let us swear our consecration to the best that is in us!

OLD TOM, ELEANOR, DAME COLEMAN, JOYCE

ARCHARD
We swear!

JOHN BORDEN
Let the wilderness drive us forth as wanderers across the earth, scatter our broken
bones upon these sands. It shall NOT kill the purpose that brought us here!

COLONISTS
Never!
We’ll stand with ye, John!
We’re not afraid!
Amen!

JOHN BORDEN
For it shall live! Shall LIVE!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 55.

COLONISTS
(In unison)
LEAD US!

JOHN BORDEN
And down the centuries that wait ahead, there’ll be some whisper of our name,
some mention and devotion to the dream that brought us here. And now ... into the
hand of God we commend us.

Everyone kneels in silent prayer. Father Martin has made

his way to Upstage Center. He raises his hand in
benediction.

FATHER MARTIN
Amen!

COLONISTS
Amen!

JOHN BORDEN
(Rising)
And now ... EVERY MAN TO HIS DUTY!

OLD TOM
On to Croatoan!

The crowd moves on and off stage as they collect props and
prepare for the Final March. Various voices are heard:

SCENE 14 - THE FINAL MARCH

As the Colonists silently gather their belongings, the
STORYTELLER enters down Left Ramp and stops at Left
Corner of Stage

STORYTELLER
And so the Colonists, under the fearful threat of the Spaniards, heeded John
Borden’s advice. With their most precious possessions and a few essential tools,
they made ready to leave the fort ... driving themselves on with their last gasp of
energy and strength. And even the rebellious ones shared in the tragedy of their
going. In the cold hours before dawn, they began their march ... into the vast
unknown.

Crowd is lined up for Final March. Bass starts singing and

others join in slowly. March is up Right Ramp on Right
Shelter. Eleanor and Borden are third in line behind two
Colonists carrying guns, then Flag-bearer.

SOLOIST
O GOD THAT MADEST EARTH AND SKY,
AND HEDGED THE SEAS AROUND,

EVERYONE
WHO THAT VAST FIRMAMENT ON HIGH,
WITH GOLDEN STARS HATH BOUND ...
O GOD OUR FATHER, LORD ABOVE
O BRIGHT IMMORTAL ONE ...

OLD TOM
Sing, me hearties! SING!
"THE LOST COLONY - 2019" 56.

EVERYONE
(With swelling voices)
SECURE WITHIN THY MERCY
WE WALK THIS DEATH ALONE.

O GOD THAT MADEST EARTH AND SKY

AND HEDGED THE SEAS AROUND,
WHO THAT VAST FIRMAMENT ON HIGH,
WITH GOLDEN STARS HATH BOUND!

O GOD OUR FATHER, LORD ABOVE,

O BRIGHT IMMORTAL ONE ...

As Father Martin passes pot, he turns to beg Runner to join.

Runner refuses. Father Martin stumbles and falls as he
approaches Right Ramp. Runner rushes to Father Martin
and helps him up the ramp.

As Eleanor and Borden reach the top of Right Ramp, they

turn to face the stage. As Father Martin and Runner pass,
Borden raises gun in salute to flag over the Chapel.
SECURE WITHIN THY MERCY
WE WALK THIS DEATH ALONE.
A-MEN! A-MEN! AMEN!

Borden and Eleanor turn and walk into darkness. The

STORYTELLER walks up Left Ramp as all lights fade except
a follow-spot on the flag above the Chapel.
