Use the following format for your museum critique; answers must be typed below the questions and

all
questions must appear in full on your final copy. You can use this document as your template. Pay careful
attention to the required number of words for those questions that have them. Failure to follow the
instructions here and on your syllabus will result in a substantially low grade. Minimal answers poorly
written are a D grade or less. Elaboration of points, excellent arguments, and good writing garner higher
grades.

1) Which museum did you visit? (check one) _x__ Univ. of Utah ___ BYU

2) Describe at least one of the permanent collection exhibits on a theme, period, geographic region, or
topic) within the museum. {150 words}

One of the permanent collections, was an art that was on the floor. The piece was about the typical path
that this artist’s family took in the morning. The artist herself, only took paths that she needed to be, but her
little children took crazy routes. In this piece, it means for me that you don’t always have to follow the path
to get where you need to go right away. You can take crazy paths, but you will still get to the same place.
This goes along with the theme of abstract. You don’t always have to make sense of everything and go on
the correct path. You can be abstract and different from other people. Each artwork in the museum each
had their own identity and that is another thing that this artwork shows. Each person and their paths are
completely different from each other, but they all give out a message to someone and it is different from
everyone.

3) Give a brief, one paragraph description of a special, temporary exhibit (for help, ask museum staff
what these are; they are usually in one of the first rooms). {100 words}

The temporary exhibit was full of art that had masks and then they painted on bodies for the masks that
were made. For each different mask made, there was a different style of body made for it. For example,
there was one painting that the mask was similar to a dog like creature, but then the body was painted with
wide hips and long legs. The body was painted with different colors and flowers on the arms and legs. After
all painting similar to these, at the end there was a painting that had flowers coming out of a vase. All these
flowers were different and there were so many of these flowers. This exhibit was talking about how things
are not similar. Each thing was different in there own way, but each painting was of the same thing, except
for the pot of flowers.
4) What do you think the museum administration and/or exhibit curators want you to learn or gain from
the exhibits you viewed? {100 word minimum}

I think the museum administration wanted people to gain and show that not every art is the same. Each art
is different and styles of art are different. For example, and the museum, there were all different types of
things used to create their art. One artist used metal, wood, screws, and other stuff and another just
painted on a canvas. The art was all very different, but it also shared how they feel about art and what they
love in life. Anything can become art just as long as you believe it is art. Another example, an artist used
old scrap paper, leftover punched paper, metal, and all other things you would just throw in the trash. This
artist wanted to show that just because it was used and old, you can still make something beautiful out of it.

5) What kind of information is provided about the works? Where might you look for further information if
you were interested? (Name three possibilities)

An explanation of why they decided to do this for their art and when they made their art work. You could
look online or talk to someone working there or you could even look at the plaque that is next to the art
works.

6) Choose several works that particularly appealed to you. Explain why you were drawn to these works.
Comment on the subject, style, medium, time period, etc. Who were the artists? What message do you
think the artists were trying to convey in the works you chose to discuss? This question must be answered
 00 words}
in its entirety. {This should be at least 5

An artwork that I liked by Cara Kebs was an art work about bejeweled cheese. I was drawn to this artwork
because it was a life size cheese and she tried to make people see just beyond the cheese, show that
there is beauty inside that cheese. The subject that was used was cheese. What was used in this piece
was silicone, glass and plastic diamonds, spandex, polyester batting, ABS, on extruded polystyrene and
wood. The time period was 2019. Another artwork that I was drawn to was an art piece by Rachel
Henriksen. In this particular artwork, there are many different colors and patterns in this artwork. In this
artwork, there was silicone and paper and many other things included. This is a pattern from the 1970’s
Pattern and Decoration Movement. I think this artist is trying to show different experiences that have
happened in her life, but also how to use these experiences to make them into something beautiful.
Another piece that I was drawn to was done by Kelsey Harrison called “Never an Hour for Thought.” This
subject was a live video that was playing on a tv. For this piece, she writes subtlety in a pen on a clay and
then takes her phone to erase what she wrote. This time period is 2019. This piece, I think, is trying to
show how technology can change the words that are being spoken. Technology nowadays are changing
things and I think her piece is trying to show how technology can do that for some people. This piece was
confusing to me and it took multiple times of watching this piece to finally understand to finally understand
what was trying to be said. A piece done by Nancy Friedemann-Sanchez, a doctorow prize winner, was an
amazing piece that had a vase full of flowers. The subject was a painting of flowers from a vase with the
style of a painting. The time period this painting is trying to show is from the Minimalism and the Pattern
and Decoration Movement while using Spanish Moorish tiles and lace patterns and colonial botanical
drawings for the medium. The time period of this piece was about when her family was trying to migrate to
America and the wanting of the American Dream. This painting was describing the journey that she had to
take in order to get it. There are so many flowers in this pot and it just shows how hard and unique her
journey was for her and her family. Another thing I noticed was the flowers don’t look very similar, there are
many different colors and style of flower which also describes the uniqueness of each flower. No two
people or journeys are ever the same which is why I think she decided to use many different colors and
styles of flowers.

7) How did the artworks you looked at relate to material we have discussed in class? (They do relate in
many ways, you just need to look for those relationships). {Minimum of 150 words}

When going through the museum, I kept thinking about how it is museums that decide whether they are
good or not, like when we had to compare two types of art and how where they were placed gave them
more value or not. This museum didn’t seem to do that, each art was on the wall except one and that was
on the floor, but that is the one that caught my attention the most because it wasn’t on the wall like the
other art works. This particular artwork was on the floor by the stairs and sometimes hard to step around
with people coming up and down the stairs. Looking at the art piece, I noticed the scuff marks of shoes and
how dirty it was but it was my favorite because even though people had walked all over it, it felt like it had
the most meaning. Another thing is when looking at the art, I remembered to always get a new perspective
of it. At first I would stand close to it, but then I would step farther back to always try to get a new
perspective of each artwork, trying to figure out their hidden meaning in each piece.

8) What was your personal reaction to this experience? Would you enjoy attending this type of event
again? Why or why not? {Minimum 100 words}

I really liked it. I am a kind of person that tries to find the meaning behind it and so I ended up staring at
one picture for 15 minutes because I couldn’t figure out what this art was trying to show. I would really
enjoy doing this event again because I don’t go to art museums and seeing this art was really amazing and
different. I liked how the art in this museum wasn’t the same. It was all different. Each artist had their own
thing to show, but at the same time I felt that some of them were sharing the same message, but just in
different ways.
