Lecture Description

• Topic: Basics of 8086 microprocessor and

Difference between 8085 and 8086
microprocessor

• Outcome: Students will be able to understand

basics of 8086 microprocessor and improvement
in various parameters as compared to 8085
microprocessor.

• Chapter: chapter-1/ 2.11/ R2

2
History of 8086 microprocessor
• The 8086 is a 16-bit
microprocessor chip designed
by Intel in 1978.
• It is based on HMOS ‘High-
Speed MOS’ Technology.
• It consists of powerful
instruction set, which provides
operations like multiplication
and division easily.

3
Basic Features of 8086 Microprocessor

• 8086 was the first 16-bit processor having 16-bit

ALU, 16-bit registers, internal data bus, and 16-bit
external data bus resulting in faster processing..
• 8086 has a 20 bit address bus so its memory handing
capacity is 1 MB.
• It can support up to 64K I/O ports.
• It provides 14, 16 -bit registers.
• It has multiplexed address and data bus AD0- AD15
and A16 – A19 lines.
4
Basic Features of 8086 Microprocessor
(contd.)
• 8086 is designed to operate in two modes, Minimum
and Maximum.
• It can pre fetches up to 6 instruction bytes from
memory and queues them in order to speed up
instruction execution.
• It requires +5V power supply.
• it requires single phase clock with 33% duty cycle to
provide internal timing.
• Address ranges from 00000H to FFFFFH.
