1. a. When should the company have been concerned with Jack’s drinking?
The company should have been concern to Jack’s alcoholism from the
time before he was accepted to the company. As a company, they must ensure
the over all welfare of their employees whether they have work related problems
that might affect the future of the company as well as personal problems affecting
ones performance to the company. This will help them to lessen company’s
situation if was address early, company’s reputation matters the most from the
first place.
b. Should it have become concerned to the manager or company, why?
Small things can create a big impact and so small problem can lead to a
bigger one. This problem is both concern by the manager and the company in
general. Because if this will not be settled early, it will affect the managers’
performance because he/she cannot properly run his/her subordinates. This will
also create a big problem that will affect the company’s name, integrity, and
efficiency.
c. Evaluate the company policy, or lack of policy, concerning alcoholic
employees.
The company has done a tremendous job, however, they must have a
strict implementation of professionalism code that will include the prohibiting of
the alcoholism in the company, especially if the company’s name is drag into
trouble. This will make every employees to avoid such actions that will make them
productive separating personal to professional endeavor. Not only for employees
but also on the possible employees, from the screening to hiring, these issues
should be address already.
2. Should Frank Moore have done more than warn Jack?
After the 15 long years of Jack’s service to the company, for me the right thing
Frank Moore could do as a manager is to grant Jack a 1 week or 2 weeks sick leave.
This will in order for him to fix his personal problems and at the same time relax and
renew himself. This will surely one way of showing that the company is concern to the
utmost welfare of its employees.

3. Would you recommend Jack for promotion again? Why or why not?
Jack has proven himself in the company for 15 long years. A single or two
mistakes would not be the proper ground for him to be not recommended for
promotions. People change from time to time. In fact Jack had regained his
excellence in work. This is one of the manifestations that Jack is worthy of any
promotions.
4. a. What does this case illustrate about alcoholism as a progressive illness?
This case of alcoholism illustrate how it will progress and can lead to
addiction. Just how Jack cope up with his personal problem. Alcohol was his way
of coping mechanism in order to forget somehow the problem. For me as a family
in the company, it their utmost concerned to every employees the proper
guidance especially as such time like this.
b. What does it show about discipline as a judicial process?
Discipline should be one of the characteristics of every individual especially
in the professional world. Every company had to have policies that will greatly
discipline every employees. This will make the company more committed in
making every employees discipline and responsible one.
c. Explain how the due-process concept was or was not followed in this case.
In the case of Jack, discipline has been one of his mistakes. This especially
when having a sudden absences without prior notice. In addition he also
committed frequent one-day absences, and lastly, the assault in his wife in public
that drag or concern the company’s image. This how Jack didn’t follow the due
process.
5. Was the firm ethically “right” in making his continued employment conditional
upon the two circumstances?
With those two circumstances, for me the firm was ethically right as Jack
continues his employment. Because they gave Jack a sanction through reduction of
his salary. As I say people change and the company was considerate in a good way.
In addition, he regain his excellence and it is difficult for the company to hire a new
one as experience and familiar to the nature of work as Jack.
6. Would you treat this type of illness differently from physical illness? Mental

illness? Explain why?
For me this is a mental illness because addiction especially goes around and
destroys the brain believing that through what you are doing you can be cured and
can ease the problem. Whatever is going on the brain is what actually conducting
individual’s action. And that’s mainly because mentally, he/she can not control what is
going on.
7. Was the manager in this case have sound decision? In cases like this, what
could have been the right decision the manager did?
The manager took the risk of believing that Jack could change and cured from
his illness. For me it is a sound decision for the manager that he gave a strong
warning to Jack at first and gave him the chance. Further, he let him continue to work
in the company with the sanction of demotion and reduction of salary as a second
chance. As a manager, he did a tremendous decision for having a concern to every
employees while reprimanding them from their mistakes. If I were to be a manager, I
will do what is right and just for everyone.
