3 Measuring Connections
This chapter explains the different connections that are required for meter testing. The connection
diagrams provided show only a small selection of the possible connections and do not cover all
types of meters.

The MT3000 reference meter is a test meter of class 0.02/0.05 with integrated 3 phase current
source up to 100 A.

It is therefore possible to perform a meter test on site, using different load points, if voltage is
present. The voltage is required as a synchronisation signal for the built-in current source to
generate defined load points with different phase shifts.

Further the user software provides the option of defining test sequences with different load points
and executing them automatically.

The MT3000 can also be used as a reference measuring device by using AC current clamps
(optional) when a load is already present on site and the built-in current source is not needed.

Current may under no circumstances be provided through the power outlet of the
amplifier stage.

The following figures show examples for connecting the MT3000 to a meter. The power for the
MT3000 may be supplied through a separate socket with a protective earth conductor or from the
test voltage.

It must be ensured that the MT3000 is connected to ground when the power for
the MT3000 is supplied from the test voltage.

Check whether the meter output includes the conversion ratio in the meter-constant or the
register, when testing meters with measuring transformers that have a conversion ratio.

It is not necessary to connect the scanning head or the impulse adapter K121 for displaying
actual values, vectors, harmonic measurements or curves. They are only required to register the
metrological impulses of the meter to be tested.

3.1 General Precautionary Measures

 Take note of the safety instructions in chapter 1.
 Determine the mains voltage and connect the device accordingly.
 When connecting the voltage measuring leads, connect the neutral lead first to
the MT3000 and then to the object to be measured. Proceed in the same
manner for the other phases. When removing the voltage measuring leads, first
remove the phase lead from the object to be measured and remove the neutral
lead last.
 When connecting AC current clamps, first connect the 25-pin plug to the
MT3000 an and then connect the AC current clamps with the conductors(s)
to be measured.
 Take note of the supply voltage (input) for the power supply. A higher voltage
might damage the power supply.
 Ensure that the AC current clamps are correctly connected and closed. An air-
gap at one of the AC current clamps may cause an additional error in the
measurement.
 Ensure that the AC current clamps are clean. Rust, dirt, etc. may cause
additional errors in the measurement and may create an inductive power factor.

also called error measurement or accuracy test). A photo-electric measuring head (e.g. TK326) is
used to scan the rotation of the rotor disk in electromechanical meters or the light impulses of the
measuring system in electronic meters. The results are compared with impulses of the MT3000
that are proportional to the power. The MT3000 directly shows the % error of the tested meter.

The actual test values for the individual phases and the total values are shown on the left side of
the display. The error and the status of the current measurement are shown on the right side of
the display. The top bar diagram represents the energy measured and the bottom bar diagram
shows the impulses measured. The two bar charts should always be active after a measurement

 Select the signal type for the start or stop of the measurement.
Select one of the following types from the pull-down menu:
Start-stop, time, NC (normally closed contact), NO (normally open contact) or
source.

Meaning of the signal types provided by the key:

 Start-Stop: For reading the energy register of a meter that is connected to the

MT3000. Enter a starting value in the E-register field by using the key.
Start the test manually with the key. When the register of the test unit
has changed to the desired value, the measurement can be stopped with the

MT3000_MAN_EXT_GB_V404
MOVING TEST MT3000 62

key. Use the key to enter the final value of the register.
Thereafter, the error is shown on the display.

Please take note that the energy register of a meter is continuously metering
after a load point has been added. The starting value entered should therefore
correspond to the real value at the time the start button is pressed, i.e. the
register value entered should be the register value at the time the start button
is pressed.

 Time: For reading the power register of maximum meters that are connected

to the MT3000. Use the key in the P-register field to enter a starting

value and specify the duration of the measurement using the key. Start
the measurement manually with the key. The measurement
automatically stops after the duration specified has expired. Now enter the

final value of the register by using the key. Thereafter, the error is shown
on the display.

 NC/NO: By selecting NC or NO you can define, if the starting will be initiated

by NC (normally closed contact) or NO (normally open) contact.

 Source*: This function works together with the dosing function of the source.
All parameters of the dosing function (dosing ON and dosing energy) must
therefore be activated in advance. Details are provided in the next Chapter. If
the dosing function is switched on, the source first switches off the test
current. In this state, no energy is counted by the energy register. It is
therefore easy to read and enter the starting value of the register. Enter a

starting value in the E-register field by using the key. Start the test
manually with the key. At that moment, the source releases the test
current. As soon as the amount of energy defined in the Dosing menu has
been measured by the MT3000, the source automatically switches off the test
current. The register of the test unit therefore stops at the register value. The

value can now be read and entered by using the key. Thereafter, the
register error is shown on the display.

* This function is available only in combination with the MT3000 source module.

meter and source) is required.

Automatic test sequences for testing electricity meters can be edited and executed from the
“Automatic Measuring” menu. All test sequences are automatically stored on the USB stick of the
MT3000 after they have been set or changed. They are therefore accessible for later application.
After selecting "Automatic measuring", the window pictured below is shown. The user can see the
test sequences already present and can select them with the vertical function keys, if required.

4.3.2 Line Parameter Menu

Press the key in the “Automatic measuring” menu (see chapter 4.3). This opens the
Line Parameter menu, where automatic test sequences can be created or processed. A test
sequence mainly consists of a sequence of individual test steps (lines), which can be freely

selected and edited. The function offers the user a variety of different parameters
and test functions. It is important that a certain logical order is maintained when entering the
individual lines, for example load point, measurement type and meter constant must be
defined in one test step before an error measurement can be configured. A faulty test
sequence cannot be successfully completed. After starting a wrongly configured test
sequence, the MT3000 stops the automatic test with a fault message or the test stops at the
test step that is wrongly configured.
Should this happen, the test sequence must be checked for faults in the Line Parameter
menu and possible faults must be removed.

MOVING TEST MT3000 82

4.3.7 Load Point (Abs) Function

This function can be used to define the load points of the absolute values. Voltage values can not
be entered, as they cannot be affected by the MT3000. The available input parameters are
current per phase and the phase shift. The form I  U for IEC387 or U  I for DIN410 must be
adhered to when entering the angles. The vector representation form that was selected in the
“General” configuration menu is adopted.

The following has to be considered if a test table exclusively uses absolute load
points:

1. The specification / test step U+I Nominal Values is not required.

2. The user must ensure that the selected load point match the test
sample when test tables with absolute load points are used.

Figure 41 Automatic measurement “Load point (Abs)”

MT3000_MAN_EXT_GB_V404
MOVING TEST MT3000 83

4.3.8 U+I Nominal Values Function

The U + I Nominal Values functions can be used to define the nominal values and the
current for the test unit. The nominal value for the current has no further function in the test
sequence and is only used as an entry in the test protocol. The current value must be the
nominal current value of the test unit. This value is the basis for determining relative load.

 The following nominal values are assumed in the event that a relative load point
is defined in a test table, but that the U+I Nominal Value information is missing:
IN =0,5 A und UN = 50 V

Figure 42 Automatic measurement, "U+I Nominal Value"

MT3000_MAN_EXT_GB_V404
MOVING TEST MT3000 84

4.3.9 Load Point (Rel) Menu

This function can be used to specify load points with relative values. The nominal values
(see chapter on U+I values) are used as a basis. It is therefore essential for fault-free
operation that the U+I Nominal Values test step is processed before this step.

Please ensure that the specified Imax values are not exceeded when an input
>100 % is used!

Figure 43 Automatic measurement "Load Point (Rel)"

The purpose of the relative input is the use of the same test table for different meters with
different nominal currents. To facilitate this, a query can be placed at the beginning of the
test table, with the U+I Nominal function is set to [ON]. After the start, the appropriate
nominal values of the test unit are queried. This ensures that no overload or damage of the
test unit can take place, as long as no load points >100% have been defined.

MT3000_MAN_EXT_GB_V404
MOVING TEST MT3000 85

4.3.10 Error Measurement

This menu can be used to specify parameters for the error measurement (accuracy test).

Figure 44 Automatic measurement "Error measurement"

This measurement requires that the scanning head is connected and works properly.
The M-time parameter determines the type [impulse/time] and the duration of error
measurement. When impulse is selected, the duration of the measurement is determined by
the number of rotations of the rotating disk rotations or LED impulses, if an electronic meter
is used. In this mode, the impulses from the meter or the scanning head start and stop the
error measurement.
When the M-time parameter is set to time, enter the duration of the measurement in
seconds. The measurement is then started with the first impulse from the scanning head and
stopped when the specified time has elapsed.

Please note that only measurements over a sufficient period provide conclusive
results. In case of doubt, test measurements should be performed in advance in
manual mode to ensure that the selected parameters lead to a conclusive result.

MT selection can be used to determine the impulse input. The MT3000 only provides the
option TK for impulse input by the scanning head.

FB-Max can be used to determine the upper error limit for the evaluation of the measuring
results. The result of an error measurement is classified as “bad” when it is larger than this
value.

FB-Min can be used to determine the lower error limit for the evaluation of measuring
results. The result of an error measurement is classified as “bad” if it is smaller than this
value.

MOVING TEST MT3000 86

4.3.11 Scanning Head Control

This is an auxiliary function to create repeating error measurements. During these repeating error
measurements, the scanning head can be adjusted to the correct position to obtain clear
impulses from the test unit. If the error values are within the defined error limits, the next test step
is automatically performed. Otherwise the error measurement is repeated until the operator
terminates the test step. The parameters to be entered during editing are identical to the
parameters for the Error Measuring function (see chapter 4.2.6).

MOVING TEST MT3000 87

4.3.12 Register Test

The function for determining the register error feeds a dosed amount of energy into the meter.
This is done in dosing mode. The counting device test can be optionally evaluated according to
Energy, upper error limit (FB-Max) or lower error limit (FB-Min).

Figure 46 Automatic measurement "Register test"

Enter the initial metering value of the test unit during the test sequence and before dosing. The
MT3000 automatically switches the current off so that the counting device stops at a defined

starting value. This value must now be entered using the key and the alphanumeric keys.
The dosing is started with the key. The MT3000 automatically switches on the current for
dosing. Once the complete dosing energy has been supplied to the test unit, the MT3000
automatically switches the test current off. The new meter value must now be entered by using

the key and the alphanumeric keys. Thereafter, the error of the register is shown in % and
the test sequence is automatically continued.

Please note that the Register Test function requires that a load point that is at
least equivalent to the nominal load IN must be defined in advance.

MOVING TEST MT3000 88

4.3.13 Measuring Mode

This function can be used to define the measurement mode that is used for error measurement.

This test step is essential when an error measurement is performed. The

measurement mode must correspond to the actual pre-selected measure-ment
mode of the test unit.

It is possible to change the measuring mode during a test sequence if this

function is also performed by the test unit.

4.3.14 Constant

This function can be used to define the meter constant that is to be used for the error
measurement.

This test step is essential for performing an error measurement. The meter
constant and unit must correspond to that of the test unit.

The constant can be changed during a test sequence, if required. The unit
I/K(Wh) can not be changed.

Figure 48 Automatic measurement "Constant"

5.3 Source Dosage

 In case that the range changes over, the measurement has to be stopped and
restarted.

This function can be used to check the registration of energy and power registers. The user can
predefine an amount of energy that is generated by the built-in power source, taking the applied
test current into account. The integrated working standard is used as a reference device.

The MT3000 provides the option of directly showing the error of the counting device or the
register. This menu can be used to set the dosing parameters (dosing -> ON and dosing energy)
for that purpose. Thereafter, automated dosing can be performed by selecting the register
function and the signal type (source).

The operator can read the register of the meter under test before and after the dosing and
compare them with the dosed amount of energy of the MT 3000.

 Connect the meter appropriately and add an appropriate load point (current and
voltage) to perform this function.

 Please note that the test current is automatically switched on after exiting the
dosing function.

Figure 71 Source dosage

the previously determined test current until the specified target energy has been
supplied to the test unit
 or restarting of the dosing process by adding the test current after a previous
stop.

 After pressing the button, the specified energy value is

counted down to 0 in the window. The displayed
value corresponds to the energy generated and measured minus
the target value. The source automatically switches off the test
current when this value reaches 0.

 Stops the dosing process at any time. During the interrupt, current I is
switched off. The last value of the energy register or counting device can now
be read by the operator.

5.3.1 Status Display Dosage

10 Trouble Shooting
This chapter deals with general problems that might occur during the service life of the device.

10.1 Hardware

Problem Possible cause/remedy

The device does not  Check, whether the mains connector is

start plugged in.
 Check, whether the main switch is on.

 Renew the fuse (250 V/1.6 A time lag), as the main

fuse might be defective.

No current measuring  The 25-pin plug of the AC current clamps might not be

results function for current and voltage by pressing the
“Default Setting” function key in the U+I Conversion
menu.

Actual values are  Check, whether the CT/VT conversion ratios have
wrong or too high been entered.

Error measurement is  Check, whether the CT/VT conversion ratios have

99.99% or HH.HH% been entered and the meter constant is activated.

 Wrong meter constant or measuring type selected.

 The scanning head is not correctly adjusted.

 Check whether the current measuring range has been

correctly selected.

 The scanning head is not correctly adjusted.

The %-fault is 67 %  Check, whether the connections are in order, e.g.

or 33 % whether the clamps are connected to the appropriate
phases and whether the phases are in the right order
and connected to the right terminals.

 The scanning head is not correctly adjusted or

receives each impulse twice.

Accuracy is OK for  Check the AC current clamps. They may be

cos Ø=1 but not for corroded or misaligned. Clean the CT’s. If they
cos Ø= 0.5 ind are misaligned, they must be completely
replaced.

Saving not possible  The cursor might still be in the field Customer ID, Bem
or Adr. Press the Enter key and thereafter the Safe
key.

 The memory is full. In this case you receive the

message “Not enough memory”

 Check if you have inserted a special configured USB

stick from ZERA. The firmware could not identify an
USB stick without any configuration.

Data download takes  Do not press any other keys while the data are being
too long downloaded.

11 Service & Maintenance

11.1 Regular Service & Maintenance
 The cables must be regularly cleaned, as dirt may affect or reduce the
insulation properties/insulation, which might lead to electrical shocks or short
circuits in humid or wet environments. The cleaning frequency depends on the
environment. Clean the device with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Do not use any
abrasives, solvents or alcohol for cleaning. They might damage the device or
remove the labelling of the device or of tools.
 The clamps of the AC current clamp must be regularly cleaned with a soft

cotton cloth and an anti-corrosion spray, e.g. CRC 2-26.

 Check that the clamps fit. Rough handling of the clamps may lead to
misalignment, which may cause measuring errors. If the clamps are misaligned,
they must be replaced.

11.2 Performance Check

This procedure is to ensure that all measurement channels (voltage and currents) are measuring
correctly. This is just a quick check about proper working of all channels considering that all
channels will not be defective at the same time, hence this procedure does not replace a
periodical calibration. Please do the following steps:

 Connect Neutral of MT3000 to Neutral of a stable source.

 Connect UL1, UL2, and UL3 of MT3000 to the same phase of a stable source.
(e.g. Phase 1 of phantom load MT3000).
 Connect all clamps IL1, IL2, IL3 to the same phase current of a stable source
(e.g. Phase 1 of phantom load MT3000).
 Voltage comparison: Compare the voltage values shown by MT3000 to each
other, principally UL1=UL2=UL3. If difference is more than 0.2 % then identify
which phase is higher or lower. Possibly the defective phase needs to be
calibrated.
 Current comparison: Compare the current value shown by MT3000 to each
other. Principally IL1=IL2=IL3. If difference is more than 0.4% then identify
which phase is higher or lower. Possibly the defective phase needs to be
calibrated.
 Phase angle comparison: Compare the phase angle UI / with each phase.
Higher phase angle or power factor error may indicate that clamps are rusted or
mishandled. It is recommended to perform this measurement at cos phi = 0.5
ind. The difference should not be higher than 0.2°.
 If the results are ok, equipment can be used further on.
The procedure mentioned above also helps to detect fault in any measurement channel if there
exist any.
